well i was in brbt's nutcracker this year. i played soldier fighting mice, and in our performance they have explosives set up to make it more exciting.
on our performance for a groupd of school children, we were starting out march toward the audience right after a cannon had fired. there was still smoke in the air i i didn't close my eyes in time.
i got gun powder in my eyes.
i couldnt see out one eye and didn't know what to do. so i thought that i'd try to act like nothing happened since the battle wasnt that long.
the pain was so terrible i missed a few bits of the dance and almost ran into a fellow soldier and mouse.
after the fact, i realized i should have walked off like it was planned to keep from ruining the dance and to rinse my eye as soon as possible. after the performance i rinsed my eye and left.
the next day i was fine. i was afraid of what the director might have to say.
but the next day i brought it up, and said "i'm really sorry about the school performance, i didn't mean to mess it up" and she asked me what in the world i was talking about and said that it looked great. then i told her about the experience and she said "omg! i heard about someone getting something in their eye! i didn't know that was you! i never would have guessed something was wrong, are you ok?"
lol. i just think its funny that i danced well enough blind to have her not notice something was wrong.
but never again, will i do soldier for them. despite that one incident, the other performances were really great. the costumes were horrid and made of stiff wool, but we managed and made it look great.

Sounds like you did the right thing to me. The best thing to do is to go on with the show unless your are completely debilitated and unable to dance.
Gun powder in the eye can't feel good >.<
