Del Shivered as new snow started to drift lazily from the sky. His flank shivered as he stood under a tree to avoid getting snow on his wings. The winter was colder and food was becoming more and more scarce. He wondered if he was healthy enough to survive. So many other soquili were bigger than he was and they had more time to put on a healthy winter coat.
Del thought he would be used to the winter cold, he was born in the snowy months, after all. Up until now, he was doing just fine. He wondered what his first spring would be like. Desire had told him about butterflies, flowers and grass tender and covered with something called dew.
He stood, lost in his daydreams.

Kanti let another snowflake drift its way unto her tongue letting the heat from her tongue melt it. She loved the snow and winter had to be her favorite time of the year. Everything about it was so bright and white, and even better she was born in the season of winter. She could remember the days when she hide in her basket nestled in the snow aruging to get out with Alona. She shook her head letting the beads on her mane jingle to a tune of their own as she let a smile spread on her face as she remembered. Alona never let her forget it!
The downside though of winter was the lack of apples around. She had grown so fond of the crunchy little treats that is made her somber to think of not being able to eat them for the next months. She gave a tossle of her head before letting her feet carry her to her favorite apple tree that stood at the edge of the woods. Her bright blue eyes watching the sky and failing to pay attention to where she was.

Del suddenly noticed to his left an unfarmiliar mare. He had been meeting a lot of those lately. He slowly walked up to the mare and tilted his head. He knew that some soquili mare were grouchy and did not like to be spoken to.
"Um, hello?" he said. This mare looked like one of the older soquili. Shhe had an excellent winter coat and looked like she had plenty of time to prepare for the winter. She had a very interesting coat pattern too, and lots of feathers in her mane. Del had often fancied the thought of more roses in his mane.
She seemed nice enough though.

A voice?
Great there she was caught again with her eyes to the sky her mouth gaping wide instead of paying any attention to where she was going. At least it wasn't her nephew running and pouncing on her to play a game. A blush flushed across Kanti's face as she looked down to see who had greeted her, on the brighter side, they didn't attack her.
It was an unfamilar stallion, one she had no recogintion of who or from where he was, yet she recoginzed his wings to be of the flutter kind. She envied them a little, to have such pretty little butterfly wings, yet she still adored the long flowing wings of the winged soquili. A smile spread on her face, her blue eyes noting that he was a bright blue, one of her favorite colors!
"Hello!" She replied, her voice a little more chipper than usually, it must have been Tsela's fault. He was always so happy, almost to the point that she thought nothing would bring him down.
"How are you today... sir," giving a nod letting the beads ring from her mane. Sir? Tsela again wasn't it, his friendliness was rubbing off...

Del Corazon chuckled as he watched the mare blush. She seemed modest, as well. When ever he blushed, his whole face looked like a strawberry.
Del remembered what his father said about addressing others. Always be polite and even the most stubborn Soquili will warm up. However, he didn't feel comfortable with being called sir, when he was obviously younger than this mare. He would choose his words carefully, so he wouldn't offend the mare.
'I am not old enough to be addressed as Sir, I'm afraid. I am not even a year old and my winter coat is not nearly as lovely as yours. My name is Del Corazon, son of Desire and Ayuni and brother to Rosace. I do not take offense in being called Del or any other name you choose to call me." replied the colt.

Kanti gave a small chuckle and shook her head. He was very polite, well more so than she could say about Tsela, despite his friendliness he was always frank with everyone and had a bad habit of shouting out the first thing that came to his mind.
"Then I won't call you sir, but with you standing there your makes me feel old, but its not as bad as my nephew who calls me auntie constantly," she gave the stallion a small smile "then I will call you Del as you ask, and as for my name I'm afraid its not as lovely as yours. You may call me Kanti, just not Aunti Kanti."
She gave a wide smile or smirk like of mirth. He had lovely roses tied in his mane and tail, and despite what he said he didn't look that young, but than again she had no idea how old she looked! She probably was starting to look like her mother, what a thought!
"However I am afraid I have never had the honor of meeting Desire or Ayuni or your brother Rosace, though I have met many other soquilis around here, and as for my coat its a result of my gluttonus behavior of eating way too many apples for my own good."

Del looked up in admiration of Kanti. His red eyes grew as wide as saucers and he took in a gasp.
"Excuse me, but did you say you've had apples?" he asked. He had heard of this mysterious fruit that drove soquili wild. He had never tasted or even seen this fruit, or any fruit for that matter. He was born in a time of hardship, with his first taste of vegetation being bark, weeds and leaves. But fruit was said to be juicy, like eating water and sweeter than sugar cubes.

Kanti raised a brow at the young stallion's face. Didn't he taste an apple before? How could someone live and never taste an apple?
"Yes, I love apples they are my favorite... but I hate that they always disappear at this time of year but luckily the indian that took care of my mother always saves a batch...but always involves going to their village.." Kanti replied with a somewhat frown on her face, " over there by the treeline is where one of my favorite apple trees nest. I usually come here once a week to see it, even though it has nothing at the moment.."

"I've never had one before. I was born just this winter seaon, so there is so much I've never tried before. What are they like? I heard they taste sweeter than sugar." said Del as he tried to regain his composture. As a flutter, he naturally had quite a sweet tooth and he couldn't wait to try all the different kinds of nectar and fruits that springtime promised.
The idea of everything being so freely available was like a dream to him. To think that the trees could actually be paradises of green and color seemed almost impossible. Pine trees were green, but thier leaves were so sharp and brittle. Holly was green but it hurt to chew on! Del tried to imagine soft tender greens sprouting from every tree.

Kanti gave a light chuckle as she watched the flutter beam with excitment about the apples. She felt sort of sad though he never tasted one before, by far they were her favorite!
"So you have never had an apple then! They are the best! They are sweet with juice with a cunchy core and even best they do taster sweeter than sugar! Or at least I think so" she gave a shake of her head to reasure him. Actually she always tried to eat more apples than bark or grass or well anything that was green and brown. She didn't like the taste of them as much as she enjoyed apples, or even carrots where better.
"If you have only been around this winter season..then what have you eaten?"

Del Corazon closed his eyes and imagined the taste. A big broad smile appeared on his face and his mouth watered.
"It sounds divine. All I've ever eaten is tree bark, weeds, tough grass and thick leaves from shrubs. They are so hard to chew and so dry. At least there is plenty of snow to get water from." replied Del, slightly embarassed. He looked at his hoof as he dug through the snow for any grass.
"I hear so many things about this thing called spring. It sounds like a completely different world that the older soquili talk about. They say that birds swarm the air, butterflys drift about and look like flutters, and there are floweres everywhere. "

Kanti made a wrinkled face when he mentioned what he had to eat. None of it sounded yummy let alone something that she would really want to eat, but she had and she did. Sometimes life had no choices, and well she didn't always want to annoy the indian for food.
"Oy they are divine, but the things you have eaten are not, but I guess when there isn't much of a choice you have to eat them... even I do at times but that isn't without a frown on my face" she replied with a half smile but have frown on her face. She really did miss apples now she thought about it...
"They are right..." Kanti nodded as she replied "spring is wonderful, and well it really does look like another world. A world full of life, where as winter is a world full of frozen life. There are so many birds around tweeting and singing with butterflies blowing in the breeze around lovely flowers...." Kanti's mind drifted about for a moment... the thought of fields full of flowers shot through her mind. Tsela would love them when they came, Tsela was born for spring, for the flowers for the birds, he had such a habit of loving such beautiful things...
"it really is a different world from now..."

"It is like the world is in a basket, just as we were when we were foals. I suppose a life of a soquili is like that seaons. I will have to see for myself if that is true." replied Del as he looked around the frozen landscape. It seemed that spring was a long way away. That winter had no begining or end. Del even wondered if Spring was simply a week where winter decided to take a rest and help soquili recover. Only time would tell.

Kanti gave a soft chuckle.
"I've never heard the season being compared to a soquili's life, but I can only imagine... as for a basket I was always willing ot burst out of it as quick as I could it was too much to remain in such a comfort zone that I didn't want.." Kanti gave a small smile before continuing "however like being in a basket getting out like spring will be soon and even though I am very fond of the snow I will love to see the flowers again."

"How much longer will it be until spring is here?" asked Del as he shook some snow off of his mane. This snow could be a menace at times. It always made him feel cold and wet. It specially stood out against his blue flank and it made Kanti look as if someone had sprinkled powdered sugar on her.
