Today is my birthday! =D
How would you say that in Japanese? Would it be something like "Kyo wa watashi no tanjyoubi desu"?
Also, how do you express that you hope for something? Like "I hope ____ happens"?
(Sorry if this is in the wrong place ><)

Your sentence is grammatically correct.
'hope' was not a verb form we got to before i graduated college. i would take a stab by saying, "ケーキが あります ほしいです." (I hope there is cake.) but again, non-native disclaimer, use that sentence at your own risk. >_<

Japanese doesn't express hope the same way as we do (with a specific verb). Not in this sense anyway. It's more like "if this happens, it will be good" type of construction. You can do this a few different ways, I believe, but they have different connotations, I think, and I'm not completely clear on them exactly. But, one way that I am sure about is "(imperfective predicate) to ii". So, if you're saying you hope that there's cake (by the way "keeki ga arimasu hoshii desu" is not grammatically correct. You can say "keeki ga hoshii desu" which is "I want cake"), it would be "keeki ga aru to ii (desu)." Or, if you hope that someone will be free, it would be "hima da to ii (desu)."
