Well first I think I better say a little about myself.

I'm a level 64 undead mage on an ally server.
I'm one hell of a PvP fan and I win my fair share of duels with anything up to level 70.

I've been playing for around 2 months now and I won't stop for another few at least.

Problem is, I have no raiding experience atm and I don't have any real way of learning as the only guilds I know that raid have a "pre-raid experience" requirement. So I'm working with my current guild to try and get raid ready by the time we hit 70, so the clan I'm in and a sister clan can go together on weekends.

Does anyone have any tips/advice/knowledge they'd like to share with me about raids/raiding?

Raiding is really easy. As long as you can follow instructions and manage aggro, you'll do fine.

Well, you've got the hardest part down - finding a guild that raids that will take your class. Get to 70. Get the key to Arcatraz, then get the Kara key. Also, look up a list of gear to aim for that will equip you for at least Heroics, then Kara. Also, look into specs & ask your guild what spec they'd like you to be. Unless you're stubborn like me, & refuse to respec (******** healing, tankadin forever!). Mages DPS no matter what, so I guess you don't have much room to rebel. razz

Some basic mods that will help you out are Omen for watching aggro, and a boss timer/alert mod like Bigwigs (I think CTRaid and Ora which are raid help mods have timers embedded in them too).

You can look up different strats for the bosses you plan on going after for the raid online on WoWWiki or Google search. You can look up videos too if that aids you better for strats.

Remember to come prepared! Dust for buffing, mana pots, any consumables you plan on using.

Its a team effort so always play your best =)

Proto - Ah good, yes, I'm quite the team player. I tend to listen to whatever anyone says so that's a good start.

Fah - Thanks, I'll put the keys on my "to get" list. As far as gear is concerned I'll probably be in near full Gladiator gear by the time so I'll work off that set and add to it as I can.
As far as spec is concerned, I'm frost atm, but I was willing to respec after I get my PvP set/items.

Vena - That was exactly what I was about to ask. smile
I've never been too clue'd up on what add-ons I should get for this that and the other. So thanks. biggrin

np =) there are a lot of other mods that people use (I like to stick with as little as possible, personally), I think some other popular choices are Grid (shows all members of the raid and status) and you might also want to pick up decursive (shows when raid members have a curse you can cleanse).

One thing you need to know about Omen and other threat meters is that everyone you want to watch on the meters needs one too that is compatible. So make sure the tanks have it or it will be useless to you :p

Frost is WIN.

Alt least untill Fire gets iceblock. Survivablity is really important, especially when you're learning new encounters.

I found this quote long ago on the mage forums:

"Raiding as a mage -> Bind frostbolt/fireball to every key, roll face on keyboard."

Frost is fail for raiding, one of our mages crafted his full frozen shadowweave set before 70, then found that out.

Frost is good for raiding. Maybe not the greatest in DPS wise but it does the job. Icecube = win until 2.3.2. All of our mages have been frost since we started raiding.

Sorry? I guess that explains why all the mages in my old guild were frost mages. It must suck.

A dead mage does no DPS = fact

I don't have a mage myself, but I hear that frost is less dps than the other specs, but I know the mages go through 'trends', like everyone was arcane before the last patch hehe. Fire is best right now apparently.

However I agree with Bacchant in that until you can train ice block (I know they are going to do that next patch or so) having that will be really helpful when you are learning fights, especially in karazhan, which I assume you are starting at. For Attu its good for an oshit move if the tank doesnt pick up at the split right away or if you pull aggro.... for moroes it will remove the garrote debuff (I think), etc etc. It is not just staying alive, because your dps is important, but also taking care of yourself puts less strain on healer mana and focus.

I think also if you are comfortable playing frost right now it will help too, because you dont want to be fiddling around with another spec while you are also learning fights =P Once your guild gets comfortable with some fights it will be easier to see the difference with trying a new spec.

And a dead mage is one who pulled aggro, therefore a bad one.

Fact is, mage is a DPS class, so you want him specced for full dps. I don't let my rogues run shadowstep.
