The orchid mare stood serenely by the thinly frozen over pond. Her reflection was almost clear and she gazed down at herself with a mix of serenity and sadness. Jaslyn had been in this land for quite awhile now. Time had glazed itself together into what was probably going to be the rest of her life… A dull rest too. She’d spent so much time traveling from here to there that now.. One place came as a challenge.
One cloven hoof lifted and smashed into the frozen water-mush mixture, sending droplets onto the orchid coat with silver swirls. Her heavy black was, as usual, pulled back into it’s three separate chunks. Now that winter had arrived Jaslyn kept her headband on.. The difference was that the orchid that usually sat on said headband was dried up and shriveled.
“Such is life, I suppose..”

Silver henna, sleek lines, a hot body. Oh yeah, Baldev knew just precisely who and what he was and what he wanted out of life. Too bad this new land seemed determined to keep him the odd-ball out. In the span of time he’d been here he had learned a helluva lot more than what he ever wanted. People didn’t care what his genetics were, hair did not make him well-loved, and his brother was more popular.
Okay, so maybe that last one was a bit of a fib.. But every time he want to go and talk to someone it seemed like an automatic shut down. His words were different than theirs, yes.. But that didn’t really mean anything did it? Sighing softly his eyes drifted shut but the hairy stallion continued to trek through the snow. Someone had to be out there wanting to talk to him.
Hell.
He was out to prove something to anybody today.

The sliding shift-shuffle of hooves took her mind from the darkness that had started to sink in. Much like the hoof that felt like soon it’d fall off from cold after dunking it into that nasty muck. She smiled just a bit at her own behavior before tossing the heavy hair back away from her face again. How many times a day did she repeat that particular answer? Kind of like wanting to know how many licks it took to finish.. never mind, that didn’t have anything to do with this.
A quiet smile was placed across her face, with the practice that any performer had to know. What was this? Another unicorn headed her way.. Sleek looks about him, bright blue coat, henna markings, and a horn that seemed to be almost razor sharp. Perhaps she would sing and dance for this stallion. Her heart raced at the prospect, so long had it been…

One eyebrow raised in a mix of disbelief and amusement. That mare was actually going to the trouble of preening for him. Although the look wasn’t one he’d trust in even half a minute. Putting those thoughts aside, Baldev took a deep breathe and puffed up with more than a little bit of male pride. She was probably a bit overcome by him. Mares here liked him, but he took a disliking to them. Being “pretty” was not exactly a cup of tea he’d care to sample any more than had already passed.
“Hello Dearling. Good to be out this bitterly cold day, is it no?” His smile matched hers. They were both like chess pieces going around and around with little on mind besides destroying the other. Uck! When had he become so thoughtful? Time for some good ole fun.

Dearling?
That was certainly a new pet-name for him to be adjusting to. A more generous smile pulled across her features before fading quietly. He was looking for something from her, the same as she was from him.. Why couldn’t things be more light hearted? Probably because if that’s what she was after that’s what would have to be given.
The only thing I can get, is what I freely give to others.
Letting a bit of fluidity and a boost of confidence move through her systems she nearly purred up at him, “Bitterly cold? No, it is simply weather where.. Something that warms a body right up must be found to do.”

Ohbuddy. She was having a change of heart about him and on the double time. A grin split across his face and Baldev side-stepped and danced quite a bit closer to her than what was necessary to have a decent conversation. His eyes took in the slightly unkempt look around one of her hooves and the flecks of dirt on her legs. Well, not everything could be perfect he’d just have to take her as-is. She seemed to be perfect with her looks. Pretty eyes, nice form, nice height.
Step by step Baldev ran down the check list of things he’d had drilled into his head before seeking company in a more passionate manner. A unicorn with a good built, coat, hair color and shine, temperament, and hopefully intelligence. “Forgive me the ignorance.. Miss? None have ever shown me any of the activities you speak of.”
A bold faced lie.. Depending on what both of them had in mind.

Her eyes twinkled up at him and two ears pricked forward with keen interest. What a cheeky bird he was. Bird wasn’t the right word.. She was getting her language mixed up again. Shrugging delicately, Jaslyn coughed lightly. Not because the need was there, but because it was a dainty noise and high lighted what she was. A soft, feminine creature. Some stallions required that in order to be even half way interested. Personally, Jaslyn didn’t think too highly of acting weak or dumb..
But whatever floated his boat. She could and would play the part to the hilt.
“Well.. There are so many options.” Her voice drew off into a bit of a husky drawl. “You know.. There are a few activities that come to mind. Perhaps you’d like to.. Sing with me. Caroling warms the body up.”

Whoah! Whoah! Whoah! Mayday, mayday! We’re goin’ down. His mind went to those thoughts with an almost amazing speed. He had been so close, flirting with her. Their bodies had been just within the range to caress lightly. With those few caresses she’dve been easy to bring closer… The little chit wanted to sing?
Of all the ho-hum, stick in the..
Waitaminute. This mare didn’t even know his name, she had teased and flirted and yet backed off into something so trivial. He’d play along.. But in the end Baldev would get his way.
“I suppose a song would not hurt.. But I have two requirements before I sing.”

The biting of her tongue was the only, the very only, thing keeping Jaslyn from bursting into laughter. The poor stallion looked as if he had been stepped all over and run wild. She’d yet to start to really tease the poor dear and he was going to throw in the towel? How disappointing.. His mind and quick wit.. Well, what she had seen…. Were enough to be entertaining and sweet.
Phew. He had more moves than a wet towel.
Her curiosity piqued, Jaslyn arched her neck and gazed up at him with quite a bit of interest… “Yes? What are these two requirements you mean to take from little ole me.”

Hook, line, sinker.
Baldev felt like grinning or doing just a little bit of a dance around the cold ground from managing to get her closer towards what he wanted. A night of his own brand of singing followed by a simple goodbye. He’d do this so many times at home and none of the mares had ever gotten with child. Baldev figured one had to be life-mated to get another pregnant..
Why worry about what would never be?
“First I ask to know your name, miss… I cannot sing.. Even with such a beautiful song bird without a name.” The second request.. How did he word that? “That I will keep secret.. But you cannot back out.”

Oh.. he was good, too good.
What they had between them was cliche at best. So many others had met up in the exact same way as the two of them and those couples had done as they were now. Meeting, greeting, flirting, and romancing. It was the season after all. It just seemed different because Jaslyn was willing to put a bit more of herself out onto the line. To risk offering part of herself through singing.
Oi, she was getting to be just a bit soft.
"I am Jaslyn.." Did she dare to accept terms that were unkown? Of course. Life was not worth living if the unknown did not come around and bite her in the butt upon occasion. "If you give me your name.. I will meet your requirements."

“Baldev, my dearling.”
The niceties were over, she was as good as his.. And the time would soon be ripe. The afternoon sun had begun to fade a bit.. Leaving a sky of reds and oranges. Hot colors, cool ground. A strange pairing that had him feeling a bit breathless. She wanted to sing with him. Baldev had a decent voice. At least nobody had ever told him to shut up when singing.
Neither did they drop to the ground at his feet in amazement.
A wicked thought cast a wicked grin.. No, they dropped at his feet for other things which was why singing didn’t really matter all that much to him. “You pick the song, and I will follow along as best as my humble mind can.”

A quick bowing of her head and Jaslyn looked around. The sky suited their mood, that she’d agree with. The song.. Probably would surprise both of them in the end. Thinking through all that she knew, which was actually quite a bit of music. She found one song that had followed around in camps, tribes, and stables this time of the year. The origin? She had no clue, the year it came to be? Even less of a clue…
Breathing deeply she let out a single note.
Going clear and true from the depth of her diaphragm the note held out before she did a complete turn about. Instead of serious and sobering the music became light, cheery, and upbeat.

“Just hear those sleight bells jingle-ing Ring ting tingle-ing too Come on, it’s lovely weather For a sleigh ride together with you.”
Baldev had heard the song a few times, although parts of it didn’t make much sense.. As with what he was and the rest of it.. Well, it didn’t really matter. Cheery upbeat music was rather unexpected and for him it took the edge off of the taboo. Not that the two of them wouldn’t have a lot of fun together.. Just well, he didn’t really know anymore.
Smiling with a bit of edge he picked up the next verse of the song and felt nearly blown away. Their voices were good together. Not even just good.. Nearly perfect. She had a rich soprano, not too twinkly or light to be annoying and his alto worked perfectly. Perhaps a strange combination for some, but it made a strange inner fire start to burn and build.
“Outside the snow is falling And friends are calling “Yoo Hoo” Come on, it’s lovely weather For a sleigh ride together with you.”

The song ended with a rather quiet note and Jaslyn gazed up at her new.. well, whatever he was. Now they would go off into the evening-afternoon lit woods and enjoy themselves. Yet, she felt a bit depressed by it all.
In the few short minutes they had been singing she had made a friend out of the stallion and now it was a requirement to fill.. not a mutual want. Shaking her head slowly, the black mane moving silkily against her neck. Jaslyn waited patiently after asking, "Your second requirement?"
