A bright red form reclined in the yellowed grass, sprawled in a comfortable way. Eyes as red as her fur were slitted, seeing nothing as she remained deep in thought. How to tell Baala? It had been a subject on Kiuma's mind for a while, and now that she suspected her own pregnancy, the former princess worried how her companion would react when she figure out the truth for herself. Would it be better to wait, or to tell her now? Would she flee from her in a fit of fear and anger?

Kiuma sighed and shook her head, eyes blinking open. No, she trusted Baala that much, and hoped that the black lioness trusted her enough to seek comfort from her in this troubled time. At least it should be some comfort that she wouldn't be going through it alone... Kiuma was fairly certain that the rogue she'd dallied with had gotten cubs on her, and it was her hope that these cubs would be all girls, and resemble both females. That had been her purpose, after all...

After a moment, she glanced around to see if Baala was nearby, still unsure what or when to tell her.

She knew now what was happening. Baala could feel the changes in her body, the swelling of her belly, the sudden tenderness of her underside. These subtle changes Baala recognized, and she knew she was pregnant. She knew that in a few weeks she would have a cub, or even more. But what she didn't know was what she thought about it. The father was a creature that had terrorized her life, had taken away what little security and innocence that she had left. Instantly she thought she should hate the babies that were growing inside of her, because their father was Damu'Jicho. But thinking even more on it, the babies were her's as well,a nd she did not hate herself at all. Her maternal instincts just weren't kicking in at this point, leaving her confused and even hurting inside. And Kiuma was gone. Kiuma wasn't around to tell her that everything was all right, that having cubs wasn't the end to her life.

Baala laid curled next to a bush, her ears flicking away flies as she pondered about what to do. There was no way she could stop herself from cubs, and once having them Baala would do nothing to harm them. She couldn't hurt the defenseless, not her own kind. The weak she hunted, but that was prey animals. Her cubs would be lions... and they would be hers. "This is why I believe in no god, they just screw you over," she muttered with a sigh, resting her head on her paws and staring dully about over the horizon.

When restlessness finally overcame her, Kiuma rose to pace back and forth, wandering in circles for a time before she struck off in a plausible direction. She had to find Baala... it couldn't be hidden any more, and she deserved to know the truth. It was so odd for the red lioness, caring for someone like this.

Red eyes never stilled, searching for the black form she knew so well. "Baala!" She called out into the heat of the day, wondering where she'd gotten to. She shouldn't be alone out here... just look at what had happened last time! Surely she hadn't wandered far.

With the sun warm on her back and her body moving easily, Kiuma fancied she could feel the small lives inside her. It was only wishful thinking, but still... she wanted so bad to share this joy with Baala, to offer her the comfort of another mother.

She heard her name distantly, it being only a gentle ringing in her ears, and for a while she did not respond. Baala was still wrapped up in her own thoughts, still trying to cope with the idea that she was pregnant. Pregnant. It almost seemed like a death sentence. She was small enough as it was, and simply was not built to have cubs herself, not big, healthy cubs. If they were big and healthy it would only be more difficult to give birth to them. Baala had never intended to have children of her own, she just couldn't picture herself with them. Baala would have to devote time to raising them, would even be slowed down by the sheer weight that she would gain, and then later by the small footsteps of little cubs' paws. It seemed more like a burden than a treasure, and at this moment Baala's thoughts were running in the opposite direction of Kiuma's.

"Kiuma?" She called out the lioness's name, and with a soft grunt she rose to her own paws. She could feel the slight added weight of her belly beginning to drag her down, and it only made her grimace. The idea of babies was becoming less and less pleasing to her, especially considering that their father had raped her. But... she would deal with it somehow. Baala always managed to find a way or two to get through these sort of things. It would be difficult, but she would manage. So, sighing softly she walked forward, towards the sound of the red lioness's voice. When she saw the familiar red form, she forced a smile onto her face. "Hey," and that was it, she wasn't feeling in the right mood to be happy and talkative.

Kiuma's ears perked as she heard her own name called back to her from somewhere nearby. "Baala!" She called, finally catching sight of the girl not too far away. Unlike the other, she didn't have to force the smile onto her face and she made her way quickly to join the black lioness.

"There you are. I was starting to worry... you were out of sight for a while. Did you see something?" She tried not to babble with relief, some part of her sensing the unease in the other and cooling her attitude.

"We should get going, if you're ready. I'm tired of sitting around here, I'd like to move on..." The black tip of her tail flicked as she frowned, looking Baala over with an increasingly critical eye. Were her sides swelling? She knew they would eventually, but was it really visible now? Hard to be certain if it was real, or just in her mind.

She saw Kiuma's red form in the distance, and seeing the red lioness made her smile slightly, if only for a brief moment. For some reason, though, she could not gather up the strength to close to the distance between them and greet Kiuma properly. She was tired, weighed down by the horrible truth of what had happened to her. Baala simply did not have the will at this point to do much, and she felt herself continually spiraling down into darkness, and she saw no way of climbing back up into the light. As Kiuma began to talk, all she could really find the strength to do for a long while was smile. Anything else seemed above her capabilities. Baala was permanently stuck between wanting and not wanting the cubs that were growing inside of her.

"No, I didn't see anything, not really. I was just tired so thought it would be good to est a little bit and catch up with you afterwards." Of course, Baala resented being alone now. She just didn't feel safe without Kiuma in her line of sight, but she fallen back anyways. Baala had needed a little time to herself, though if it fixed anything or only made it worse, she did not really know. She was glad, though, to be back with Kiuma. Once again she could feel a blanket of security wrapped around her small body.

"All right, I'm not so tired anymore. We really should get moving again. I've wasted enough time as it is." She saw Kiuma's eyes examining her, but with a shake of her head she tried her best not to think on it. Baala started to walk then, knowing well enough that Kiuma would follow and eventually lead the way.

There was worry in Kiuma's eyes as she watched her companion, the words she spoke some how hallow and ringing false. When she got up and began walking, the red lioness moved to join her, longer legs catching her up quickly till they walked in stride. She continued to watch her carefully, flicking her gaze from her path to the lioness that walked at her side.

"What's wrong, Baala?" She said softly. "I can feel something off with you, and if there's something out that's making you nervious, I'll take care of it soon enough." She put on a fierce expression for the other's benefit, unsheathing her claws just a little so the black tips were visible in her creamy colored paws.

"I will not let anything bad come to you again, I swear that to you. I will do everything in my power to take care of you." There was sincerity in every word, and all of Kiuma's iron will behind it. Sure... Kiuma's history showed a tendency for things to run beyond her control, but she never gave up the fight.

Baala had seen, just for a little bit, that worry in Kiuma's eyes, and she hated the fact that she was so readable. She hated it that Kiuma was able to tell when something was not right with her, because sometimes she simply didn't want to bother the other with her problems. She was a burden, Baala knew that. She had been since the day Kiuma found her, having been the weaker of the two... and over time that had not changed. It was Baala who lagged behind, it was Baala who was the most emotional, and it was Baala who's mind was not sound and strong. Something always seemed to trouble her, and those few times when everything perfect... well, it wasn't always what it seemed like. If only she wasn't so readable... everything could look perfect then.

"I'm not nervous, just tired. I haven't settled into the rogue life, but neither have I settled into the life of being in a pride, so I'm always caught in the... mix of things. I'm not suited to either lifestyle." It was a lie, but a well-constructed one, and at this point Baala would rather lie than tell Kiuma the truth that she was pregnant and having doubts about her pregnancy. Baala would figure it out on her own time, and she didn't think it necessary to worry Kiuma over it. She would have the cubs, and what happened then depended on how she was at the time. She couldn't think further than that, it was too difficult and too upsetting.

"I know, you've always been there for me. I know that what happened to me will never happen again." But, that didn't stop her from feeling insecure. That didn't stop her from having her moments of fear when she was left alone in the open savannah. What happened to her would never be forgotten, but she would still try to live through it, survive and go on with her life... with those cubs on the way.

"I think you've taken to the traveling lifestyle rather well, actually." Kiuma said as she smiled, skirting around what she really wanted to say. "You've certainly grown up from when I first found you, and believe it or not, you've filled out and hardened. You can travel a lot faster and father then you used to be able to, and I don't have to hold back my pace for you nearly at all anymore. That's something to be proud of, right?"

For a moment, she eyed the black lioness, wondering how best to broach the subject. "If you're tired, we can rest a bit longer you know. We're not really in a hurry... and your body will function better if you've had enough rest. Have I been pushing you too hard lately, to make you so tired?" There was a strange twisting feeling in Kiuma's gut, something she'd never really felt before. Was this nervousness? Was she too... timid to bring up the subject of their pregnancies?

Bold, fierce Kiuma was afraid to talk to a lioness both smaller and younger than herself... surely the ground would open up, sprewing lava, and frogs would fall from the sky before such a thing was possible!

"If there's something truly wrong... I do want you to feel like you can tell me... I want to you turn to me whenever you are having problems and let me help shoulder the burden." The words were earnest and heartfelt, the whole conversation so out of character for the red lioness. Was this Baala's effect on her?
