Whenever we see someone play fast and well we can tell how good they are. But A problem I have is that I'm not super fast. But I can do about anything else with a guitar. Does being fast really make you a good guitarist? Does being not so fast make you a worse one?

Alot of lead guitar is all about speed and tone together.
But I play Rhythm, unless its happy hardcore, its mostly slower etc.

I'd rather play a moderate tune with feeling behind it than a speedy meaningless one. Like Feuer und Waßer to Through the Fire and Flames

Does being fast really make you a good guitarist? Does being not so fast make you a worse one? no , not really . It just means that pretty cant take it slow lol . You should be able to play at leat 120bpm at least with any scale it being note per whatever , past that might be overkill . And you should be able to take it slow too !!! but the most important things about lead and rythym playing is , have a good feel , nice tone , and make is sound good . just cause someone plays fast doesnt mean they're playing good .

not at all, i'm more of a rythem guitarist than anything, and when it comes to most rock/metal a heavy chug will get your point acrost, but i wish i could play faster. untill then i'll just keep playing me rythe parts.

Speed is a good thing, but I think having the feel and sounding good is more important.

Does being fast really make you a good guitarist? Does being not so fast make you a worse one? You know Les Paul, Right? duh!!! If you don't then there's a problem. either way, He said that if you walk up to your favorite guitarist and said Dude you play fast he would walk away! Music Is about sending a mesege and then people responding to that. So, speed matters not. Feel for music and Emotion do. Cool?

Here's a couple of examples of people with great sounds and who are well respected:
David Gilmour
John Frusciante
These two guys anyway are not fast players by any stretch. They simply make each and every note count toward the song as a whole. I still get shivers listening to some John Fusciante solos.
Speed usually gets developed without proper technique, so if you want it, seek out some lessons to get it. And I maintain that regardless what speed you play at, you should use a metronome. ALWAYS.

Speed is something that kind of grows on you after a while. It takes time and practice. I spend between 1 and 2 1/2 hours most every day at my guitar. Practice! Practice! Practice! pirate Thats how you get better and faster, if thats what you want to do! xd

Being fast doesn't necessarily make you good; It just makes non-guitarists think that you're good.

i love the beauty that eminates from slower , more drawn out songs.... i cant listen to fast paced music for a long time .... for instance i can mabe listen to two or three dragon force songs then ill change to something more moderately paced .... i love the emotion that comes from slow speed acoustic guitars ... sometimes i feel like crying because of the beauty and emotion ... even if its a happy one.... fast is not always better .... just a little more interesting to watch at times. ... but a really good guitarist can play either way and put his or her soul into the sound.
heart heart heart
