So, I think the title explains it all.
take note, as I hope you would: the movie 300 does not depict the Spartan military tactics, military dress, or locations with any kind of accuracey.

In comparison, the Spartans wore the "Kevlar" of the day, which was damn-near arrow-proof (enough to keep you on your feet, anyway, which is all they required of it), and covered themselves from head to toe in tough bronze or hide armor. While they may have had balls of steel, that doesn't mean they were stupid when it came to extending the battlefield life-expectancey. In other notes, they saw Arrows as womanish and cowardly weapons of the weak of heart and body, and would generally sweep the opposing army off the battlefield with 8-deep shield ranks, like the Big Bad Bouldozer from Hell (er, Hades. or whatever you want). They would also trick an enemy with false retreats, then with astounding discipline and courage, would turn again and cut their overconfident persuers to ribbons.

Bushi Warriors (Samurai) had superior archery and equestrian skills, as well as finely tuned weapons and armor. their numbers were historically few (at least those of quality). They had a strong, if short-lived, economy upon which they could rely for their horses, armor, and schooling.

This fight goes to the samurai, who's bows could easily penetrate bronze armor, and who's horses could ride circles around the Spartans, as the Japanese were not stupid enough to attack spear holding infantry while on horseback. Dismounted, samurai could slip in between the spears, where the short wakizashi would be lethal, as it could easily cut up bronze, which is no mach for steel.
