The time had come, after months of waiting and preparation those sharp contractions had began and had forced the mare to the ground. Otherwise gasping for breath, sides heaving and covered in sweat - it would be impossible to place feelings into words. There was simply no way to describe the pain that the mare now endured. However, it wasn't a bad pain for she knew what was coming...all that could be said was that she was a little miffed at the spirits for deciding that such a glorious event had to be so bloody hard.

Ah...life wasn't without it's trials!

Then again, Yei could hardly call her life ordinary. She rarely conformed to tradition and nor did her bonded to the point that she was one of a mere handful of mares that had decided not to place their children in baskets. Instead, she had chosen to bear them with pride and she would give birth in a cave secured and guarded by her mate. It had everything she needed - most especially warmth.

Carefully lined with undergrowth, leaves and other materials - Grencia had done his absolute best and duty as a father to make the cave perfect. He had even sacrificed yet more feathers to the cause and in doing so had made a very soft and squishy heaven for his children to be born into. Of course by now he'd grown accustomed to the prospect of twins but little did he know that the spirits had done a little more than that!

Thus it was with great difficulty that he maintained his distance and watched the outside world as Yei cursed bitterly from the depths of the cave. Clearly in pain, and uncomfortable with her current situation - it made him glad to be male regardless of how selfish the thought might have been.

"Just in time, I suspect..." His human bonded slipped passed him, uttering words he couldn't quite comprehend while petting his neck. It seemed she had been chosen to deliver the foals, given that Achak was a little on the squeamish side. "Very good."

One thing was for certain, the wait was going to kill him.

~~~Some time later~~~
By now the contractions had intensified and instead of the heavy breathing the whimpers had already began to echo within the cave. For anyone unfamiliar with a birthing female they would have suspected she was struggling but that wasn't quite the case. Rather, the mare had been pacing herself until the point that she was ready to bring forth the first into the world.
The first of 'twins'.
Ah, if only she knew...
Pushing hard and once again breaching her own pain threshold the mare gave out a painful whinny as she pushed harder and with the greatest of efforts brought one foal into the world. Otherwise slimy (as all new born babes were) but healthy, it wasn't long before the faint breaths could be heard as the sac was torn open and the muzzle freed. A brief squirm, a flutter of petite wings and the babe was released - a very healthy colt revealed.
Then she turned to the second, again gritting her teeth as she pushed again and the second of the two boys emerged. A little bigger than the first, he was the second to be born but was otherwise wingless. A culmination of the two parents, his markings were very much that of his father but the reach colour indicated that his mother had most definitely influenced his pelt.
...Then it happened - that little surprise as the contractions began to happen again.
"Whaa...?" The mare positively gasped, weary from the pressures of birthing the twins she was a little surprised - a third at her age? It seemed almost impossible and yet...another gasp, another push and yet another struggle revealed a tiny, very dark pelted girl. Like her eldest brother she had wings but the unique tail and the peculiar feathers on her head...well - she may have gotten her pelt from her mother but she was most definitely the image of her father!
Triplets!
But...wait...
"One more sweet pea..." While she didn't understand the voice the human was once again rubbing at her belly encouragingly and with another cry the mare felt another contraction. Back, stomach and every muscle in her body already throbbing the mare found it more than a little difficult to keep her head up. "One more!" Again the human female encouraged her and it was with the greatest struggle that she pushed again, positively weezing as the fourth and final[/] child slipped from her...
She would have laughed if she had any breath within her to find out that her life surrounded by stallions was set to continue within her own brood!
Nevertheless, while she may have been weary and close to a collapse she took it upon herself to look round and strain as the four tiny foals were placed against her side. Each breathing softly, and with the occasional squirm 'happy' and 'proud' didn't quite cover how the mare felt - particularly when the eldest nuzzled at her side and creaked open a very bleary eye.
The world had changed. What had once been warmth and crowded space had suddenly erupted in to cold and a heck of a lot of space. The little one hardly understood what was going on, blind and confused as his entire world transformed in an instant. Squirming some, his lungs breathing their very first breaths of air, the experience was less than pleasant. . . . Fluids were spit and coughed out and the little sunset colt found himself hit with a new desire:
FOOD!
Bleating softly, eyes still glued shut, the colt struggled within the new world. It seemed to take forever - if the little being had much of a grasp of forever - but he finally found himself pressed against something warm. Whatever it was felt soft and nice, it was a comforting feeling and it didn't squirm or kick around much either! Doubly great!
Curled up tight, still craving warmth, the little one began to relax some. He was still hungry, but he could find something to eat soon enough. Giving another muted bleat, a new world was revealed when an eye creeped open.
Suddenly everything that had been rendered black took form - there were colours! Colours he never knew existed, objects he'd never seen! All the strange scents that had been hurled at his senses now had some sort of shape to go along with them and special colours all their own. Surprised and startled by this revelation, the little orange and gold colt gave another muted bleat of surprise.
It seemed he had a lot to say but had yet to discover what it was to actually speak.
The little female didn't move much after being 'forcefully removed' from the safety and warmth of the mother's womb. She appeared to be in perfect health, breathing steadily, but she just didn't seem to want to move.
As far as she was concerned, things had changed for too much and far too quickly, and if she moved now, who knows what could happen? Instead, she simply spread her legs out across the floor and waited for stuff to occur. She could feel the warmth of others radiating all around her, and that was enough to keep her content for now. Although, she was definatly hungry.
Well, something had just hit his side... He gave a small and rather watery grunt as his sister unceremoniously nudged at his tummy and again the bleary eyes turned to survey his surroundings. For the most part they were dark, save for the tiny streams of light filtering through some sort of hole to his left his new 'home' was dark. That being said the squirming and the warmth was still there even though it may have been a little more spread out than it had been before.
...In a way, it was kind of fluffy too - in fact it was much fluffier and drier than his previous home. Much fluffier...and it had the most peculiar smell too. Truth be told, when he had been in his mothers wound he wasn't entirely sure of how he felt, all he could recall was being a sleep. Aware of the presence of others, he had existed in a world of dreams up until the point that he had heard the high pitched whiny and something inside his chest had stirred to life.
It had been that gulp of cold, mountain air that had opened his eyes and granted him the awareness he had craved. Now against his mother's side he was much in the same ship as his siblings, uncertain of the world around him and acutely aware of his own hunger. He had no words, nor comprehension of what really lay around him.
Snuggling against his mother's side he released a quiet gurgle in response to his brothers bleating and with an inquisitive muzzle searched around his mother's stomach for some form of nourishment - their were benefits to having instincts!
Thoroughly exhausted by her ordeal, the mare could do little more than watch her quadruplets in a bemused fashion. Delirious from the pain and exhaustion, proud didn't quite cover how the mare felt - the spirits had blessed her but she had never dreamt it would be to this point. Thus, it was with great affection that she lowered her head to nuzzle each of the bleating, gurgling and otherwise dozing foals affectionately.
It seemed that they were already developing their own personalities - the bleating one would obviously be the more verbal, the eldest would be the observer (or so she assumed) and the baby girl seemed to be almost...shy? The sleeping fourth was a mystery to her,while he breathed steadily and was healthy his soft snores indicated that his personality would remain a secret for a little longer.
"Grencia, you can come in now if you wish...." She murmured gently towards the cave entrance where the faint outline of her mate could be seen.
And he had heard it - obviously agitated and impatient to be granted access to both mate and children it was with a sigh of relief that he shot passed his bonded human (who had moved out of the cave) and had moved inside. Drawing nearer the mare he had expected to see a pair of healthy twins by his mare's side but much to his surprise...
"Four?" He gawked in an incredulous fashion as he observed the tiny tots by his mate's side, each squirming and occasionally making a sound while others snoozed. Healthy as far as he could see, he was all to aware of the tired yet proud expression on his mare's face and the fact that the spirits hadn't blessed him with two, but four little tots.
Good things really did come to those who waited.
"Now you cannot say I am not verile," he teased at last, flashing a smile as the mare arched a brow in response. "They're beautiful Yei..."
The little one was beginning to adjust to the world around him. Though the colours were covered in shadow, they still seemed extraordinarily bright to the newborn. From pure darkness to the shadows that enveloped the cave, the little one would be in for quite a shock as soon as he took his first steps out in to daylight. Thankfully though, that wouldn't be for a while yet. . . .
First things first, and all that. Adjusting quickly to the new environment, the little one twitched an ear as he hear the sounds of sleep from one of his siblings. Glancing around, he only then realized that he wasn't alone. There were red and golden orange ones nearby, one resting contently while the other seemed to be nose and nuzzling the 'wall'.
He didn't realize that the wall he rested against was none other than Mom, but whatever it was was nice. There was a peculiar scent that was significant to him, something that drew him close to the crimson fur. The warmth that was projected wasn't just a physical heat either - instinct told him that this 'wall' was good and it would be well if he remembered.
Damp ears twitched as something moved swiftly in. Silver eyes grew wide and he attempted to seek out the sound, twisting his neck this way and that. Forget food - something was happening! The rustling noise quieted but a new scent suddenly hit him - it was strong and muskier than his 'wall'. . . But who or what could it be?
A strange voice broke through the silence, and the little one could only bleat softly in protest. Who was it and what were they doing here? Was it another one of them? Or was it someone new?
The little one wanted to struggle to his hooves and move, but he had yet to discover their worth. Instinct would help get him to his feet, but for now, all it wanted was to direct him to food! FOOD!
Disheveled tail swished behind him as he soon mimicked his brother in searching for sustenance. Something told him it had to be there, there was a new way to eat. . . . Ah ha!
Found it.
He was such a smart little one, or so he had to believe.
