((Yeah...I can't think of good titles ^^;; ))

Black hair slipped under the rushing water as Thorn leaned down to take a drink. The frigid water stung her throat and stomach but it helped center her a bit. She straightened and looked to the north where the mountains stood tall across the sky the darkening sky providing a beautiful backdrop. She almost wished that she was on the tops of those mountains once again and away from the vile creatures that seemed to swarm across the lowlands.

She huffed feeling the anger bubbling into her veins once again and bent to get another drink. She had come here to see the land freeze over with white crystals. She had been so excited to find that the clearing a short trip to the west had been coated with frost today. It had been so wonderful until that stupid winged b*****d had shown his face and decided to trash the place.

Her eyes narrowed and she continued to gulp down the icy water ignoring her bodies protests until she started choking. "St-stupid...f-fool of a...waste of...flesh." When she couldn't force anything down she gave up and stood straight once again. So much for the chill of winter helping soothe her.

Winter was comming swiftly now that the mild days of autumn had passed. The streams were turning harsh and icy, the lake frosting around the edges at night. Frost rimmed the grass and the few bristly trees about. It hadn't snowed yet... Krad wished it would. At least he wouldn't feel so out in the open. The leaves had dropped from many of the trees and bushes, leaving stark black/brown branches that he, in his white clothing, stood out against like a drop of blood in the snow. All things considered, he was rather indifferent to the cold, up to a point. His clothing offered some buffer to the chill around him, and it was enough for now until the snows did start to fall.

He gave a snort that puffed in the air before him, ears flattening in annoyance. He was sane, but there was a flickering gleam in his eyes that one would be wary of should they see him. But he had not yet encountered anyone about in this stretch of woods, so he would calm eventually. What the blond needed was a good fight. But there was none to be had unless he struck out at the trees themselves, so perhaps he could find someone to have a good conversation with instead.

Pale hooves picking their way carefully through piles of rotting leaves and fallen branches, taking care to not make too much noise, a force of habit more then anything else. His ears flicked when he heard noise off to the side, head swiveling in that direction. Towards where a stream wove, if his memory was correct. Pacing that way, he paused alongside a scraggly pine bush, watching as a mare stood at the stream bank. She looked familiar and it took a moment until he recognized her. Thorn, from Dark's herd, currently gulping water until it choked her. He frowned at that, wondering what was distressing her enough to make her want to do such a thing.

The blond paused a moment, wondering whether he should leave her alone or not, deciding finally that he would talk with her, if only to find out what was the matter. "You will cause yourself to become ill if you continue drinking with such speed, Thorn." Krad spoke calmly after she had straightened, wings rustling against his sides. He stayed where he was, not wanting to startle her any more then he no doubt already had. Unless she had better ears then most and had heard his near silent approach.

Her dark olive green eyes widened in alarm as a familiar voice reached her ears. She smiled slightly lighting her eyes return to their normal state. "Pain is beauty you know." She answered gazing into her blurred and distorted reflection in the moonlit stream. From what she could tell her eyes were still clear and her face was still lovely as usual. That black masked stallion was a fool to treat her like an ordinary mare she would get back at him one way or another. She watched as her reflections eyes seemed to flash then narrow as though she were trying to intimidate herself.

"Krad..." She started turning just enough to see the blond angel out of the corner of her eye. "You do not think I'm childish or worthless do you?" Her voice sounded strangely like a bell. Sweet and musical. It didn't match her soul at all.

Without waiting for an answer she put her muzzle to the water again and took another deep drink actually hoping for another coughing fit like before. It didn't come. It seemed her throat had loosened up in the short time she had been speaking. Instead her stomach churned slightly from the added chill leaving her to shiver.

"Not all pain is beauty. Some of it is only pain." He told her softly, moving around the pine with a rustle of white cloth.

Stepping across the frozen ground, Krad paused as she glanced at him, gazing back at her calmly. "M'lady you are neither childish nor worthless. You are a gift to this land. A shining light in the darkness." He said smoothly, one ear canting back as he smiled charmingly at her. Oh sure, he was laying it on rather heavily, but it seemed appropriate at the moment. Being a rather good judge of a person's moods, Thorn seemed upset about something and, dare he say it, fragile at the moment. So being so free with the compliments couldn't hurt any.

Head tilting, he watched as she bent her head to drink once more, wondering what had happened to upset her so. He also wondered how to ask her such a thing without being offensive about it. Perhaps... "So may I ask what brings you into this section of the woods?" He questioned, lowering his head to look her in the eye.

So clever. She snorted staring her reflection down in the water. It was both horribly annoying and terribly wonderful. She didn't want to admit he was right about beauty and it's relation to pain this time.

As she drank she thought over what he was saying. After a moment she lifted her head from the icy river water and turned to look at Krad. "A gift am I? A light?" For a moment she looked like she was about to attack but it was all left over from before. In a short second everything about her expression had changed. She turned her head slightly her confidence in her appearance returning. A smile fell on her face and her anger left as fast as an eagle flies. "Those I will agree with. Besides it's not like that white fool of stallion knew what he was saying anyway."

Acting almost as though she hadn't just been trying to hurt herself moments ago she met his gaze with her own. "You ask that like I ever leave the area." She said with what sounded to be a breathy giggle. "I live in this area during the winter. Everywhere from the base of the mountains to the forest to the far edges of the lake become my domain once the chill sets on the land." She paused for a moment and looked around. "Though normally I do not come quit this far."

Her smile reversed and an angry flame danced in the center of her eyes once again. "Idiot. That's all he was, an idiot." She sighed and let her head turn down to the frozen ground beneath her. Able to see the ruined frost in her mind again. It was times like these she wished bruises were a lovely red color instead of the ugly blue and yellows they truly were.

His ears tilted back and his tail flicked across the ground as he caught the gleam in her eye that accompanied her words. But he settled and tilted his ears forwards a bare moment later as the gleam faded and he saw her lips curled in a smile. "You are indeed a light to me. After all, you are the one of the few intelligent beings I have encountered on this plane that is able to hold a conversation. And conversation makes my life much more...stable." He said, saying the last word after a pause as if testing to make sure it fit correctly. His head tilted briefly, eyes settling on the river's current moving just past their hooves. He kept silent around the question that was curling in this throat. It was best not to ask what stallion. It might set off the mare's already fragile balance with her nerves.

Eyes flicking back to her, he gave a soft chuckle, shrugging his shoulders with a rustle of wings. "I was not aware that you roamed the area during the winter. But it is a good thing that you have wandered further then your usual way. Otherwise, we would not be speaking right now." Krad said with a faint smile, pawing a the ground in a brief, sudden movement before becoming still once more.

Listening to her sudden angry tirade, Krad resisted the urge to move, letting her finish before curving his neck and tilting his head to catch her eye. "What happened to anger you so?" He questioned softly, face neutral so as not to set her off. One had to be oh so careful around the unstable. He should know, seeing as so many had done so around him before.

She smiled slightly being referred to as intelligent but it did not last long. Her mind drifted and she was no longer focused on the blond's words but on the images replaying themselves if her mind. The fresh frost, the chilly air, and the appearance of the two masked stallions. The blue one following the monochromes guide and the two began tearing apart the clearing leaving it a brown mess before turning and laughing at her. The events in her mind were skewed to further feed her rage and left her shaking in anger. The presence of a tear snapped her from her altered memories in time to hear Krad's question.

"It seems not everyone in this part of the land has realized that I am who I am." She said giving her head a bit of a toss the few strands of her mane that had been wet down by the river sticking to her cheeks. She glared at the strands for a moment demanding them to realise her with her eyes. When her mane did not comply she settled to ignore it and made her way to the winged stallion's side. "They insulted me Krad..." She said sadly and angrily at the same time tucking her muzzle underneath his mane. "They insulted me and they ruined the frost. They kicked up dirt everywhere and refused to move when I told them to." She sighed and shut her eyes feeling herself began to shake again. "He said that I was ugly, Krad."

Anyone who spoke with her for a short period of time would have thought she was completely incapable of feeling any emotion that even bordered on normal. And yet here she was with crystal tears running down her pale face. There were several things that Thorn would not tolerate but only two things that could send her over the edge. The first of those two was anyone insulting her painted wings and the second was anyone denying the fact that she was beautiful.

Krad blinked, a frown curving his lips as he watched a tear track its way down her cheek. Never would he have thought to see this mare shed tears. He didn't know what to say to her first statement, nor did he know how to react when she edged up next to him and buried her muzzle beneath his mane. He'd never been all that close to anyone aside from Dark, and that was only because they were fighting.

But before he could figure out how to react, he heard her speak muffled words colored with sorrow and anger, and the feeling of uncertantity that he had just felt faded in the wake of another emotion. His jaw clenched and his ears slanted back in anger at whoever had spoken such cruel words. The blond would have thought that a stallion should know better then to be so rude to a mare. No matter how frustrating or arrogant they could be. Even Dark, as uncivilized as he may be at times, knew that one never insulted a mare. And most certainly never called a mare ugly. But it would seem such was not the case for all stallions. Some had no honor.

Giving a soft sigh and pushing aside his anger, he stepped up closer against her side, stretching a wing out to cover her and curving his neck to nuzzle her lightly. Krad had never had to comfort anyone and he rather hoped he wasn't making an error somehow. "You are not ugly." He told her fiercely, surprised at the fierceness in his own voice. But Thorn seemed to bring out another side of him, and he was still getting used to it. Giving her another light nudge and ignoring the feel of tears wetting his neck, he continued speaking. "I cannot go back and correct their cruelty, but perhaps I can replace the image of their act with another one of beauty. If you will allow me to escort you?" He questioned softly, head tilting slightly.

Wings. She liked wings. Wings with feathers. She had always loved feathery wings. They were soft and warm and also could be extremely beautiful but they were also one thing she had never expected, comforting. It was a strange feeling. She had been comforted many times before, her unpredictable mind saw to that, but she had always been sedated by trinkets or kind words and soft touches by her herd mates. Wings were new. She had never considered them comforting, no there had always been a sense of longing around wings but she had to admit, this was a much nicer feeling.

"Mmm, and you do know beauty much better then any unfortunate monochrome stallion would." She said her tears practically vanishing. Her quickly changing moods were one thing about Thorn that was either loved or hated, mostly hated. As she thought over his answer she rubber her head against the wind completely oblivious to his discomfort. If it weren't for his wings she would be very used to this kind of thing so she assumed anything with beauty like hers received the same treatment.

"I suppose a trip would be nice as long as you don't take me too far away or leave me." With that said she stepped away to slip out from under the white wing and shot him a look saying that she was dead serious. As much as she wanted to see all the beautiful sights she did not want to break routine more then she already had. Her annual trip was quickly becoming strange.
