Huff! Huff! Little wings fluttered as fast as they possibly can, the already small flutter making herself as small as she possibly could to zoom through the trees and away from the stallion that had given chase to her - his teeth had torn one of her wings, darn it, and it would take some luck to patch it back together. At least if she was smaller it'd heal faster? That was her logic, in any case. "So mean!" she yelled to nobody in particular, voice carrying though not as much as it would if she were bigger, "Try to help someone and they BITE you!"

When she was finally sure that she'd lost track of him, the small, brightly colored Soquili landed herself on a branch of a nearby bush and panted heavily, closing her brown eyes as she tried to calm the beating of her heart and catch her breath - neither an easy task.

"Mean, mean, mean, mean...." And now she didn't have the energy to grow larger and wouldn't for a good hour or so.

He had been trying to nap. It wasn't a simple feat as the kittens were constantly tangling themselves up in his mane and tail but he had just about fell into his slumber when he heard someone yell. He only caught a few phrases. Mean? Bite? Was someone being attacked? He pushed himself up and one kitten tumbled to the ground. The other kitten seemed to be hanging from his mane. He could feel the claws against the base of his neck and he swung his hair slightly so that the kitten could flop upon his back.

"Thanks, papa" came the quiet reply, "are you gonna go see who that was?" Patches, the tougher of the two kittens, seemed ready and willing to take on any adversary. "If I see whoever is scarin' her, I'm gonna give him whats for." The little kitten clawed at the air. "He wont know what's happenin to him."

Tiger was the more timid of the young felines. "You gonna go save her, Papa River?" she asked curiously as she jumped around from one leaf pile to another. She didn't like riding River like Patches did. She preferred to stay on the ground.

Well, let's not jump to any conclusions just yet. Let's go find out what's going on first. He set off walking in the direction that he had heard the yelling from. The woods had become so silent that he wasn't sure the creature was still around. "Hello," he called as loudly as he could. "Anyone out there? Need any help?"

Hopefully it wasn't anything serious and if it was, he wouldn't end up late. Heck, if the kittens hadn't confirmed that they heard it as well, he probably would have passed it all off on the beginning of some dream.

Theia was lost in her own person tirade when someone's voice rang out through the trees and made her voice stop. Brown eyes widened slightly and she looked around, officially wary until the part about needing help was heard. All right, so it was a friendly voice - definitely not something that Theia couldn't handle. Hopefully.

Breathing caught, she carefully made her way to the edge of the branch and peered down, catching sight of the white stallion and two little kittens. Aww! Kittens! Almost enough to get her attention away from the nibbled on and ripped wing she was sporting.

"Hello!" Timid? No, not in the least bit. Why should she be timid? Nothing to be shy about in this world, that was for certain.

At first he wasn't sure where the voice had come from. He didn't see any creatures around. Perhaps it was a small animal? He scanned the ground and then the trees before he finally spotted her. She looked like a soquili but she was tiny.

"Hello, miss, are you all right?" He wasn't sure if he even spoke loud enough. Her voice certainly traveled well for her smaller size though the woods were extremely quiet. It always got so quiet when the weather became colder so sound traveled further.

The kittens apparently had no idea what to make of her either as they just stared in stunned silence.

"I'm okay," Theia said with a nod, "But my wing isn't! The poor thing, torn now. All because I tried to help! Can you believe that?" Her tiny brows furrowed for a moment before she flopped herself into a 'sitting' position on the branch itself, "Try to give a grieving stallion some cheer and they chase you."

Ah, the sunrise flutter had always thought that offering cheer and love to people would be a good way to brighten someone's day. This had been a rather hard lesson for her, that was for sure, and she didn't look all that happy about it. Oh, her wing would be fine eventually, but now she just wanted a hug. Which was a bit difficult to get when one was a horse.

River arched his neck to get a better look at the little soquili sitting on the branch. If the situation hadn't been so real, it would certainly look comical. He felt like a giant next to her. He WAS a giant next to her.

As he peered closer, he saw that her wing was indeed damaged. Who would do such a thing? Wings are very important to those that fly. If they were meant to be grounded, they'd be wingless like him. Most were not fast on the ground and their wings gave them the edge the needed to survive. And this tiny thing surely needed her wings more than most. He could imagine birds and all sorts of predators trying to get a hold of her.

"Some creatures are not cheerful," River noted sadly, "and see such things as an annoyance or hindrance." He was not one of those types and truth be told, he wasn't fond of the moody or evil types. But he had to teach his own little ones to judge all creatures from afar and to trust their instinct before approaching. There are a lot of dangers in these lands and more seemed to spring up on a daily basis.

"It looks like your wing will heal. You'll just have to take it easy for awhile." Of course, she probably already knew that. He wasn't knowledgeable in soquili wings but he did have a lot of butterfly companions that got hurt on occasion, sometimes by his kittens, and their wings always healed in time.

Tiger decided to break the silence with her ever sparkling curiousity, "Papa, why is she so tiny?"

Patches was not far behind. "Yeah, I want to pounce her. I know it's not right. She's not a mouse or bird or nuthin, but I can't help it." He had no idea what to think of the tiny soquili. She looked like River.. but was the size of a mouse. It was new to him to see something that was commonly much larger than him.. being much smaller! "Can we keep her, papa?"

Theia allowed the larger Soquili to peer at her and examine the torn wing, even shifting it out so he could get a better look at the near transparent and delicate thing. Like a child granting permission to an adult to see one of their boo-boos, Theia sat perfectly still until River pulled back and told her that it would be all right and it would heal.

"Unfortunately, it seems that way," the flutter answered, furrowing her brows and giving a little harumph of displeasure, "It's sad. Such danger and distrust in the world. One would think that a bit of cheer would be appreciated." Her wings lowered almost pathetically, the small Soquili lifting her head to look at the much larger one. "I don't think I'll be able to take it easy. Chances are, if I use that hole in the tree the owner of the hole will see me as dinner! I'd give anything to be big again."

Pausing, she looked down at the kittens. Did they just call that stallion papa? Odd, they didn't look like Soquili, or like him. Was it a new cross breed? No, that was silly. They'd still look like horses. And be bigger than they were.

"Keep me?" Eyes crossed, "I'm not a pet!"

River couldn't help but laugh. He hoped the little mare wasn't really upset at their childishness but he found the idea charming all the same. He'd never consider making her a pet of course. While she was small, he could easily tell that she was a soquili like himself.

"It must be hard being so small," he commented curiously. It would seem like she could be squished or kicked away and killed if anyone particularly evil got it on their head. Even accidents could happen around such a tiny little creature. "Do you need a place to stay for awhile? You're welcome to rest on my back. I'm sure Patches won't mind giving up his spot for a mare in need, right?"

Feeling River's eyes on him and the responsibility offered, the little kitten puffed out his chest, "Not at all." Though it was a little awkward, the kitten managed to claw his way down the stallions tail. "It's a bit bumpy when he moves but it's fun," the kitten added. Of course, if the mare didn't accept the offer, he was going to reclaim his seat.

River smiled, clearly pleased at the chivalry the little kitten attempted to show and turned back to the mare, "I don't mean to be rude, but can I ask what you are? I haven't seen anyone quite as small as you." He had seen many things in his life but a tiny soquili was entirely new to him. Perhaps he had been a hermit for too long now.

Oh, no, she wasn't upset - just mildly amused and confused at the same time. She'd never had someone ask if they could keep her before, after all, and it was a strange request to hear. "Mmm, I enjoy it," she gave in response, "But one does enjoy being normal sized every now and then."

Her wings remained wilted, though she couldn't help but smile as the kitten made his way down River's tail, "What a sweetheart you are," she cooed toward the kitten who was, for now, much bigger than she, "How can I resist such a chivalrous creature as yourself? But perhaps before I make my way onto your back," Her head nodded toward River, "We should exchange names. I'm Theia. And, to answer your question, I'm a flutter. Most of my kind tend to venture out as larger than I am currently. It uses much energy to do so, but it's safer."

Now, all she had to do was figure out how to get from point A to point B when she obviously couldn't fly. Or at least, she shouldn't fly...right? Maybe she could float. But that would agitate her wing further, wouldn't it...? A contemplative look came over her face as she stared at River. Hmm.

River arched a brow are her response, "You can change your size? How interesting!" Soquilis having abilities wasn't new to him. He was a unicorn after all and in that, he had the ability to heal. But being able to change your size? That seemed much more grand.

At her introduction, he silently scolded himself. He really had been removed from socializing for so long if he was forgetting proper etiquette. "I apologize," he admitted with a sigh, "It is not often that I meet others of my kind. I am River, and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Theia. As for the little kittens at my side, they are Tiger and Patches. I adopted them." He couldn't help but smile at the name of her rance, "A flutter you say? That has a nice ring to it."

"I'm Patches," the black and white kitten called out, as if he had to point out the difference. "I'ma gonna help protect you, you know." Just to show how tough he was, he scratched and hissed at the air.

Tiger rolled her eyes but smiled welcomingly up to Theia. She wasn't big on talking nor did she plan on protecting the mare. She knew that her papa would really be the one to do it. She was just a kitten after all.

When he noticed she was looking around, he reared back on his hind legs and tried to reach his head as close to the branch as he could. She was so tiny that he hoped his head would provide a big enough landing spot. Of course, she would still have to jump down to his back and he really didn't want to risk hurting her. He was embarrassed to realize he hadn't exactly thought this out well. His heart was in the right place, at least.

"Yes," she answered as he reared back and she jumped carefully onto his head, making sure to land where his hair was so her own hooves didn't p***k him at all. They could be quite dangerous, after all. At least when she was in a larger form. Hooves to the head could actually prove fatal! "Perhaps when I've gathered up energy I'll shift for you. There's no need to apologize either, River. It's indeed a pleasure to meet you. You and the wee ones."

Once firmly settled on the other's back (using her genius ingenuity to use his neck as a quasi-slide) she looked down to Patches, "I'm certain you will do a fine job at being my champion, Patches. I feel safer already."

And at peace, too! Just to think a few moments ago she'd been huffing about nobody giving a damn and here was three knights in shining armor! Lovely.

The stallion couldn't help but smile. How many soquili could make the claim that they gave another a ride? Without so much as stressing a muscle or breaking a sweat? It also touched him that he could possibly make a new friend. The only other one he knew was Eponine and she was seldom around. Perhaps she had settled down after all.

"Do you have anywhere in particular to be, Theia? If so, I can take you there, no matter how far away it might take," he offered, "though you'd be more than welcome to just hang around. We don't exactly have a home. We tend to travel around from place to place."

To be honest, he hadn't found a location that felt just right. He liked to take the kittens around so they can experience all the wonderful things around them. From the woods to the clearing and then to the mountains, they had lived just about everywhere for a period of time. He showed them the roaring might of the river and the calming tranquility of the lake. He wanted the kittens to be able to adapt to most places if they ever wandered off on their own or something happened to him.

The stallion started walking, careful to keep his steps as graceful as possible. The last thing he wanted was to bounce the little thing right off his back.

If he could puff out the little chest of his any more, he would have. The little black and whtie kitten felt so full of pride, he was close to bursting. He walked behind his papa and his new friend and paused briefly every few paces to jump in place and look from left to right, daring for anyone to interfere. His sister would roll her eyes and nudge him ever forward.

"I don't have any place to be. I live by the wind, River. Wherever it takes me, I go." Theia didn't exactly enjoy staying in one place for too long. Wanderlust got her eventually when all the flowers had been visited and all the butterflies and bees were met and there was nothing new to look forward to. It was better that way. What point was life if there was nothing new to wake up to each sunrise? Sunrises were beginnings. She wouldn't be stuck in a rut.

"If you're sure I wouldn't be a bother, I'd love to stay with you three. I promise I won't use you as transportation all the time!" As soon as her wing was better she'd be zipping around. Already she was itching to do so but knew she couldn't.

As for Patches' antics, she couldn't help but smile and watch quietly. Such cute little things they were.

He liked the sound of that. It seemed the little soquili was just as nomadic as he. Why settle in one place when you didn't know what was out there? It seemed that the land was so vast and different. Who knew what they would find if they never stopped? If they kept going until the end?

"You wouldn't be a bother at all," he replied honestly, "the company would be welcoming. It's not often we are lucky enough to make a new friend. My only regret is that we had to meet under sad circumstances." Though he did not have a vindictive bone in his body, River was sure whoever had hurt the little mare would pay for it. He fully believed in karma.

He wasn't sure where he was going. Perhaps he would let the wind guide him. He couldn't fly like she could but he closed his eyes and felt the direction of the wind and started walking that way. He felt bad that he wasn't experienced in social graces. He would surely put the mare to sleep but perhaps that would help her heal at least.

"It's only a sad circumstance if you allow it to be," Theia said cheerfully, "Sure, my wing is injured, but if it hadn't been injured I wouldn't have met you or the kittens. That has to mean something, right? So to me, that's happy circumstances." Ever the optimist, wasn't she? The mare laughed quietly and lay herself down upon the stallion's back, wings draping down like a lace blanket.

"So, tell me something about yourself, River?" Putting Theia to sleep wouldn't be too hard, truthfully. She'd worn herself out in the chase and flying about before then. However, the flutter would definitely try and stay awake.
