Do you think the pledge of allegiance is somewhat violative to the rights of children of parents who are atheist.

I personally don't believe in God, and do question many religions and their basis.

Is it fair to force religion into school boundaries. I mean, I know kids are given the right to pledge or not, but they are just kids, and the pressure to do this ritual means that they will pledge, regardless whether they have been brought up in a home where God is as existent as the Tooth Fairy.

Yes, there is a bias in this thread, considering I am Atheist, as I stated before.

So, discussion question:
Should God be in the American Pledge of Allegiance?
Of not, why? and if so, why?

If you ask me, (who live in sweden).
I say that everyone has the right to their own beliefs and to pleadge to something you don't belive in, is wrong.

Religion has nothing to do with the state, and the state has nothing to do with religion.

Yes, also I'm an atheist.

I remember reading of a case, where in one school district, it was mandatory to do the pledge of allegiance, no matter who you were. And if you didn't, you'd consider to be committing school defiance, so you'd be expelled from school. Not only that, but for some reason, the expulsion also was not really considered an expulsion. You basically weren't allowed at the school, but it was not an official expulsion, so it would be looked as as if your parents weren't taking you to school.

If you ignore a child's education, that's a crime, and a parent would be fined money and be taken to jail. So if you didn't pledge, not only was the student expelled, but the parents were charged for neglecting their children's education.

Now, Jehova's Witness aren't allowed to pledge, it is forbidden against their religion. So, basically, a lot of children who were brought up as a Jehova's Witness were being expelled from school, and their parents were going to jail. This was a massive violation to the children's rights.

Gladfully, the stupid law that required the children to pledge was overturned by the Supreme Court, but you can see why government and religion can not coincide. Obviously, not everyone is the same.

They shouldn't coincide at all! Isn't there a 'seperation of church and state', or something like that?! I talk about this in my school all the time; I was actually the first one over my peers in our village to stop saying the Pledge of Alleigance. They followed my lead.

It was awesome. But...

My school, unfortunately, is full of Christians (which sort of makes me the black sheep in my family and among my peers, being an agnostic/atheist), so most of them stopped just because they were too lazy to say it. Recently, I don't even put my hand over my heart. I just stand with my hands in my pockets, staring out the window defiantly.

Sometimes, though, I'd stand there, recite some of the pledge to my own liking, then say, "The future nation, under me"... followed by maniacal laughter! Still... soon, I won't even stand.

Really, it's not only the "One nation, under God" part that ticks me off...

*eye twitches*

But I won't get into that.

If you sing t the pledge it does not mean that you follow god's ways. But it does mean that this Country was based around god. This country was very religious and back then everyone spread their faith. It is just saying that not saying you warship god. Or believe in god.
If you don't believe in god. Why do you think there is a Universe? Where do you think it came from? Where do you think anything comes from? I guess you just don't really care. Oh and Ipo. you're ******** stupid shut up. You're such an a** hole. Oh you get pissed off so easy if you hear "god"? Get over it you puss.

And this country does have something to do with religion learn your history. If you guys are going to get mad over it. Just don't sing. Don't ruin it for the rest of people who like it. I used to be an atheist and it seems all they ever do is get mad over it or act tough. Or say ******** god ooh. Just shut the ******** up okay? Everyone has their freedom no one is forcing you to sing so shut the ******** up. mad

Meh, I live in the bible belt, so we say the pledge with "under God", but those who don't believe in God are strongly encouraged not to pledge. The pledge of allegiance in and of itself is politically and religiously incorrect looking at it from a christian prespective anyway, because I don't think christians are supposed to pledge to a flag...did the original person that put God in the darn thing miss that, or am I making this up?

Where I went to school all you had to do was stand. I never did much like the fact that "under God" was in the pledge, I actually didn't see much of a point to pledging to a flag in the first place. By High School I had stopped doing the pledge and just stood waiting for it to end. Sure you should have respect for the flag, but really pledging allegiance to it everyday? I'm not saying they should take it out, but saying the pledge should be your own choice.

I actually don't have a religion, I believe so many different things that I sometimes contradict myself.

eh, i'm kinda torn in between. i mean, i dont think that religion should be in government at all, but the one nation under god thing is true. America was based on religion (ironically) and the freedom of such even if some dont believe in god (myself included)

religion is actually pretty interesting to learn about...i just hate the people who are overly religious and spout all of it to others who dont believe.
