Unfortunately there are not a lot of 6-string bass books out there that are real good at teaching.

I would suggest going though scales ( if you do) and figure out how to double the octave, then after you nail that, do the 3-octave scale biggrin

also, Learning Dream Theater might help biggrin

playing on the nesscesary strings at appropriate times, treating it like a four string. and btw unless you are in a skilled band like dream theatre you might get mad at your new 6 string, because you dont really need that low b and high c, the neck is a big, bulky nightmare for "regular" music. (my take on it)

thanks....i have been trying to figure some dream theater out. as i am is beginning to get easy. also ive been working on some stuff played on 5 strings so i can work with the B string. i dont find the neck a nightmare though. my hands are big enough its becoming like a second nature to know where the strings are...and i only got it less than a week ago. this post was also kind of a bump so if anyone else has advice....go nuts

Good luck with the six string. Just remember to practice the 4-string bass a lil bit as well, for the six and four string bass are different instruments and have a completely different feel.

I suggest learning lots of funk or jazz, and lots of doom metal. They will work kindly to your extra to strings I believe. Maybe if you like things extrem go for some grindcore, and focus on extremly fast finger taps combining the low B with the high C.

6 string is a beast of an instrument and to be completely honest it's a beast of an instrument. My suggestion is to be ABSOLUTELY fluent with your 4 string before even making an attempt to jum to 6 string, I made that mistake and it gets a lot harder if you don't know where to play all scales in every possible combination. I'm back on the 4 string until I master the neck for that, then I'll switch to the 6 string. Another thing is that the 6 string kind of cuts into the guitar's range of notes, which may or may not be a necessary thing... I guess it's all preference but a lot of bassists will say "let the guitarists handle those notes".

No offense Peacexbass, but why did you post in a thread asking for six-string advice just to say play a 4 or 5.

Six string is just one extra string than a 5, and gives you a wider range. Yes you do go up in the guitar range, but not all the way up there. The sis string yes is a beast to master, but you will open the three-octave scale, plus you can play more melodic with the higher range.

It will take you time to learn one yes, but it is a completely different instrument than the 4 and 5 string bass.
