i recently started studying mythology on archangels and fallen angels and i am interested in hearing what you guys have to say about them. if you could be specific please do so as i am trying to learn all that i can. all i have found out so far is that the devil ( lucifer) was the most beloved angel i heaven until humans were created. his name actually meant rising star, meant to signify the end of darkness. then god showed all of his love to humans and lucifer felt betrayed, acted out against god and was cast out of heaven.

Lucifer means Morning Star, actually... The Luciferian beliefs are that God cast him out because he rebelled by teaching magic to man because he thought it was unfair that it was kept from them.

A lot of the mythology on the infernal heirarchy comes from warped translations and interpretations of the ancient Semitic faiths. For example, the name Astaroth is incredibly likely to have come from the Semitic Astarte or Asherah or the Assyrian-Babylonian Ishtar. Nearly all of the ancient goddesses that the name is associated with are goddesses of fertility, war, and sexuality. In the Lesser Key of Solomon, it is referred to as Astaroth, a male entity. In the Latin Vulgate translation of the Bible, Astaroth is referred to as "Ashtarthe" in singular and "Astharoth" in plural.

According to Babylonian mythology, Ishtar was the divine personification of Venus, which is also noted as being the Morning Star (oddly enough).
Ishtar's worship involved sacred prostitution (hence the term "whore of Babylon"), and such data would have been likely viewed by the body-conscious Jews as unholy. It doesn't help that Ishtar's myth involve a decent into the underworld. Ezekiel mentions an ancient practice of mourning the death of Ishtar's lover Dammuzi (which corresponds to the dying year), so obviously there was some religious tension from this practice.

I don't know very much about fallen angels, personally.
I do know that there was some TV show about them on a while ago. I never did get to see it.

Fallen angels are demons...more or less...they are rogues that god cast out with Lucifer, or Satan, whichever you prefer to call him, they fight for Lucifer against God and his soliders which are Angels as well, more and more fallen angels are becoming something common to talk about which is very interesting, because it happen as earth was being created, because God told the angels to bow before man, and most of them refused, this lore can be found in the muslim religion and most mythology texts as well! it is all very interesting to talk about!

So I'm assuming this is about the nephilim in the sense of fallen angels? I've heard of several translations of the Hebrew word, but generally the accepted one is "fallen ones." Most believe that this is, of course, a reference to fallen angels due to the description: Nephilim tend to be taller, extremely physically strong and have supernatural abilities.

The only possible mention of them in the accepted texts of Christianity is in the story of Noah's Ark in the Old Testament. This is Genesis 6:

The Bible
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

The Book of Enoch has a lot of interesting insight about this. I found that this guy did a really great job both explaining all of it as well as bringing up some of the counterpoints to the theory of the possibility of these beings.

Oh yeah, I should make the little disclaimer here about how I'm not presenting this as fact or anything. But I still think it's interesting to consider. xP

Yes, I am lazy, but this guy did a much better job explaining it.

First word of the first paragraph after the quote goes on about Nephilim. Though that is in the context that aliens made madkind, sooooo, take it as you will.

I perfer the hebrew version of how 'Morning Star' ended up 'exiting' heaven. I think sooner or later you'll find that some people tie fallen angels into elves some way or another, just throwing this out there so you don't 'suddenly' come across either my first link or this subject....

Flicking through the book on fairies the other day and read the foreword for the first time since I got it while on holiday in Scotland.

According to this book it was commonly believed (in Scotland, Ireland and some parts of England) that when the angles fell to earth they became the fairies that are around us now. There was also something about the 72 leader angles becoming the 72 Princes of the Fairies.

@ Endlos Blut Staub: What on earth do vampires have to do with the fallen?

The fallen angels that were too good for Hell and too bad for Heaven became the Fairies and lived on earth.

I really enjoy films on that same topic. Here are some recommendations, with links to the Internet Movie Database

Prophecy is a good one, and Viggo Mortensen plays Lucifer! Talk about hot. The zombie guy, though, is really disgusting, so gross-factor warning in this flick.

Constantine with Keanu Reeves isn't the greatest, in my opinion, but the ending is absolutely magnificent. Talk about a twist! Oh, and the angel Gabriel is a female in this version, which I thought was quite unique!

And I haven't seen Fallen, but it looks like it's on the same topic. I'm going to make a point to check this one out, though. (Like Prophecy, Elias Koteas is in this film! You probably know him as Casey Jones in the original Ninja Turtles movies.)

It's not that uncommone now to find Gabriel shown as Female now. Personally I alway think of Gabriel as a male, but it's not suprising a lot of people think he should be a she due to a lot of the paintings done of Gabriel show him looking very much like a woman.

Angels, fallen or otherwise, are genderless.

Speaking of Fallen, I find the concept of Nephilim (children of Angels and humans) very interesting. Do you think there are Nephilim walking around today?

Anybody can read a lot about angels and whatnot but nobody can truly know a thing unless they've talked to one or are one.
