I am eighteen years old and recently engaged. I am twenty pounds underweight, and I have not seen blood in over ten months. I am NOT starving myself, but I take a medicine for seizures/migraines that decreases my appetite and causes serious stomach pain, constipation, and vomiting if I eat more than a very little. I would just change medications permanently, but ever time I've tried a trial run of another - they don't work well enough to allow me to live normally and function successfully.
I, with all of my heart, want to be able to have a child or children. I have not lost hope that I will be able to find a better medication, but - how long can you go without having your cycle and still get it back?
I have nightmares about this. I want to see that blood again!

It is possible for a woman to go for years without having a period and still get it back again. Like many other women, I did not get my period or any spotting while I was on Depo. That lasted for about five, maybe six years. I have been off Depo for two or three years now, and I have very regular periods. I have never been pregnant though, so whether I am fertile or not is another matter. Seeing blood does not necessarily mean one is ovulating normally.
My lack of a period was due to hormones, however, while yours is due to weight. When a woman stops getting her period due to weight, most of the time she can get her period back once she gains weight again. Some women do not get it back though. The longer you stay underweight, the greater chance you have of fertility problems even after you get your weight up to normal.
If you want to have your own baby, keep in close contact with your doctor and ob-gyn in case they have any ideas or suggestions for you. If you do have fertility problems down the road, there may be medications to help there too. You might even be able to talk to a nutritionist. She might be able to help you come up with a healthy, but bland, diet that would work for you.
Keep in mind that you should not try to get pregnant any time too soon, even if you did get your period back. Before getting pregnant, you'll have to make sure you put on and can keep on enough weight to support yourself and baby. Right now, your body is telling you that it can barely support itself. Also, you'll have to see if the medication you are taking is safe for women who are pregnant.

Thank you very much. Ah, this is heavy on my heart. I've been trying to gain weight, consuming many mini-meals with lits of whey-protein and soy protein. My insurance won't allow me to visit by neurologist and nutritionist for another two weeks, but I'll make it. Thank you again for taking the time to answer.
