Soft sounds of sleep came from a patch of bushes at the edge of a clearing. The ever dwindling amount of leaves were the only cover from the cool air. With each passing day, Fairweather had though about searching for better shelter from the coming winter. But every day he put it off, not caring enough to lift himself from the ground and go hunting. And so, sleeping in the not-so-warm bushes, he shivered once in a while. However, even had he been awake, he probably wouldn't have cared. Not that he didn't feel the bitter sting of cold air. He most certainly did. It was just a matter of how little he worried about being chilled.

Alima had set up a basic territory. It was small so far and focused mainly around the den she had made for herself to weather the winter and a space to hunt and fish, where her lands touched a lake. She was looking to expand a bit, thinking a head in case food became scarce in the quickly approaching winter. Her pitch dark obsidian coat help keep some of the bitter wind chilly away making her exploring a little easier, but Alima had to admit the thought of returning to her cozy den was a welcome idea in the back of her mind.

Still, she pressed on. Alima wanted to make sure she'd last the winter with relative ease, so this was a must. She slipped into a clearing and moved along the edge of the clearing. She kept alert for other Kylan and possible prey items. Because of her unique eyes, she felt a bit withdrawn from the major populace of the region, but she got by.

Alima slowed and paused near a bush. Somewhere in the tangle of shrubbery was a sleeping creature, judging by the sounds she was hearing. Her curiousity was piqued. She took a cautious step closer, sniffing the air. "What do we have here," she mused quietly to herself, outloud.

Sleep rarely held the male tightly. A stray critter, the snap of a twig, nearly anything could pull him from the realm of dreams with ease. It wasn't surprising that a floppy ear flicked lazily, recognizing that something had changed. Instinct tightened his muscles long before his mind awoke and thoughts drifted back into place. But as soon as they did, cloudy eyes slipped open and he lifted his head. Letting out a sharp yawn, he shook out his pelt as well as possible from his position situated between the poking branches of the bush.

"I wonder, what do we have?" He spoke out without turning. Though her voice had been quiet, lack of good eyesight had heightened his other senses, hearing most of all. When he finally did turn, nothing was visible other than the usual strange and blurred shapes. If the voice's origin was even close to where he was looking was completely unknown.

Alima gave a small gasp in surprise, jumping slightly. She hadn't expected to rouse the other with her whispered musings. Flustered, the dark female bowed her head apologetically and curled her tail about her feet. "Oh, forgive me for disturbing you. It wasn't my intention to wake you. I was just looking about for extra hunting grounds for the winter and I heard you sleeping. My inquisitiveness got the better of me," she said, her voice soulful and smooth.

She lifted her gaze and peered through the branches to the male. The first thing the female pinpointed was the other's eyes, followed by face, quills, and body.

Ears flicked once more, picking up her apology and leading his head just a little to the right so he was looking in the correct direction. He still couldn't quite see her, though. To make out anything but an outline, the other Kylan would have to be just a bit too close for comfort. "I doesn't matter," he responded after a while of staring at the fuzzy world. "I don't sleep well, anyway." There was a bit of a bite to his voice, but he dismissed it with his next words. "If you're looking for hunting grounds, perhaps you should move on," he finished placidly, almost politely. Maybe he would be luckier with this one than the last female that refused to leave him alone.

An eyebrow quirked at the male's biting tone. She straightened her posture, cocked her head to one side. "Well, I wouldn't sleep well either if I curled up in there to rest." She sighed as she looked over the clearing. She had been able to catch the scent of a few prey items. A rabbit or two, some sleepy chipmunks that were getting ready for their sleeping during the winter, a handful of birds. It seemed to be a half decent area for hunting. "Is this area your territory? It appears to have a fair amount of prospective prey, but if this all belongs to you then I will take my search else where."

"Where I sleep is my own concern." Maybe he really should've looked for better shelter earlier. Ah well, once again he cared little; not only for his own choices, but for the opinions of others. Letting his gaze wander now, he glanced around, wondering idly if this spot was indeed good for hunting. He too scented animals nearby, but had never much thought of them as food. He was, in fact, a herbivore. Returning his attention to the female, he snerked. "I don't claim territory," he informed her. "Nor do I allow others to tell me I cannot stay somewhere because they claim it is their land." The forest was public property as far as he was concerned.

"Well, even if I were to claim this area, I wouldn't chase you out. What you do where ever you do it is your business and is of no concern of mine. I simply wish to get by. What do I care if others move freely about my home? As long as my resources are enough to support me then I have no problem sharing space with one such as yourself or anyone." Alima shook herself to dispell her mild irritation at the male's demeanor. "I don't need a lot. I just want to be sure I'm fed when the plants go dormant and when the ground grows hard and cold." Her mother and her were basically nomadic when she was a cub, never staying in one place for longer than a month. Growing up, all her mother wanted for her was to settle in a place that would keep her. She learned to be a survivor. She was omnivorous. Eating mostly plants in the spring and summer, then taking to hunting in the cooler months when fresh vegetation was harder to find to support herself. "Its fine that you don't claim any territory, but this whole ordeal is what my mother taught when I was young, so this is what I know."

The explanation was listened to at least semi-intently. She had her points, he supposed, but then again, he still couldn't help but disagree. How could she claim land to be her own? That was such a foolish idea, he believed. Ah well, arguing wasn't a pastime he enjoyed, so he ignored the notion.

Slipping from the bush he'd chosen, he shook out his pelt more fully now. "To each their own," he mused aloud, taking a seat now that he was free of the trappings of the branches. A tail slipped habitually across his paws, curling and flicking at the tip as he let his eyes fall upon where her voice came from once more. "If you wish to hunt here, I can't stop you, nor do I really care. Do what you will."

"Well, I'm glad to see you aren't stuck," Alima said in an attempt to lighten the mood, her smile could be heard in her voice. The cool wind howled through the trees, rattling the leaves that still clung to the branches. Her gaze drifted up towards the tree tops. "I fully intend to. Though it would be nice to have more than a 'I don't care'. You've got to care about something or other. Going through life without any true attatchments is..." She paused as she searched for the right word to complete her musings. Unable to find the missing piece to her thought, she continued. "Oh, I don't know. Difficult? What of when you're gone? There wouldn't be anyone to miss you and your memory would go as the leaves before winter. Rattling, bone dry before the winds, to be swept away in the cold air." She sighed then blinked at realizing that she rambled on on one of her tangent trains of thought. "Oh there I go again." She shook her head with and embarressed laugh.

A brow raised at her tangent and he wondered idly just what had inspired such a thing. How poetic. A smirk came to his maw, the first real expression on his part. "What do I care if I'm remembered?" Not caring was obviously a trademark. "What good would it do me to have someone think of me when I no longer exist?" No good, that's what. Or that's what he thought with vivid clarity. He didn't need company or comfort. He didn't need anyone to mourn him when he left. When his time came, he wanted to exit the world quietly and alone, the same way he'd lived in it. Despite the fact that'd she'd laughed it off, he couldn't keep from inserting his opinion. As bitter as it was.

Alima blinked at his reaction then frowned slightly at his words. Her brows knit in accompaniment to her frown. "So, you care of nothing?" She gave a soft sigh as she searched for something to challenge him with. "What of your parents? Or siblings, if you had any. Some one had to raise you. We aren't spontainiously spawned, you know." She curled and uncurled her tail from around her feet, a habit of hers when she thought deeply. "What good would it do you to have someone think of you when you no longer exist," she echoed. "Well, in a literal sense, none; you'd be gone. But does it not matter that no one would be impacted by you? No impression of who you were or what you accomplished? That seems so lonely to me."

Then it hit her. She didn't know his name. "Oh," she drew her ears back almost shyly, "I don't know your name." She rolled her eyes. "Pft. Well, to be far you don't know mine either. I'm Alima."

"Nothing," he informed her sourly. It was true, after all. As of yet, he hadn't found anything of importance to care for. "My father was never around and my mother gave me nothing." Shaking his head, he chuckled, a hollow sound. Loneliness was the only thing he knew. That's what he was used to and that's how he planned to live out the rest of his days. It was just that certain other Kylan seemed less inclined to allow him to do so.

Canting his head lightly, he sighed, unwilling as ever to give his name to anyone. "Alima," he repearted, shutting his misty eyes. "I'm Fairweather. King of not caring," he joked, although his tone didn't make it very humorous.

"So I've gathered, Fairweather, O King of Apathy," Alima quipped. She gave a sigh and pushed some fallen leaves away from her feet. "I get what your saying about your father. Mine left very shortly after I was born, leaving my mother to raise me on her own." Shaking her head, she looked into Fairweather's eyes, her expression questioning and direct. She tipped her head, not understanding. "How can you say that about your mother? She gave you life and a head start. If she didn't care about you, she would've left you deal with the elements and hazards of the world on your own. You can't tell me that she did. You must have learned at least some basic skills from her."

Expressions were lost on him, honestly. Perhaps that was one reason he didn't get along so well with others. Poor eyesight couldn't read what others wanted to say with their own eyes. Ah well, not that he cared. And his not caring was certainly not surprising. Smirking, he looked away from her blurry form, watching the familiar blobs of nature. "My mother... I'm not sure I knew her at all." It was a lie, really. His mother had been the most important person to him. Despite not liking the name he'd been giving, he kept it graciously because she had been the one to give it to him. "I'm not sure I know anyone at all, so it's not surprising." His words barely made sense.
