As they reached the cliffs that held the openings to the tunnels that would one day enable Artemis to have something resembling a sewage system, Zasha began to notice some strange things. The burrowers--mole-people and badger-people, and all their kindred--who rarely set foot or paw in the light of day were lining the streets. Many of them looked lost, angry, or frightened. Since normally the burrowers were among the most steadfast and hard to upset of Artemis' denizens, the knot in Zasha's stomach tightened.
The tunnels themselves seemed different--a bit more rugged in their construction than they had been before, as though someone or something had been tearing at the edges.
This did not look good.

Loralei folded her wings as soon as she touched ground, her eyes watching for Alucard. When she saw him, she sighed gratefully. She could've sworn she had moved too fast... Loralei's heart was racing, the look on Zasha's face before she left was... terrifying.

Alucard stopped and tried to catch his breath. He didn't know what was going on, and didn't seem to notice that there were any problems anywhere save for the fact that Loralei appeared to be troubled by something.

Loralei gasped slightly for breath, then began to run towards the group of people facing the tunnels. "Zasha!! What's going on?" Loralei panted for breath as soon as she reached her, a sick metallic taste in her mouth.
