When I go to the pet store, more often then not, I come across some young fish in the livebreeder tanks. These babies were most likely born in the tank, and have been there for a few weeks if their size is any indication (1 to 3 cm) But what always mystifies me is how they manage to survive for so long in a crowded aquarium with no hiding places. confused

Gravel. They hid inside and only come out for food. I have watched my babies bury themselves, it amusing.

Now that puts a new twist to the phrase "buried alive". But it is a reasonable explanation, and with all the commotion in a pet shop the grown fish probably can't concentrate much on hunting for baby fish huh?

I used to work in an LFS, and whenever the live-bearers had babies it was always the dark coloured, fast ones that survived. Dark coloured babies did better because the gravel was dark and they could hide in it. The fast ones were just, well, fast.
Most of them got eaten eventually. If not by their parents - then we'd feed them as snacks to picky eaters. Poor little guys. surprised

Recently my two tanks have taken a turn for the worst where live plants are concerned and are currently pretty bare since the plants all sort of died due to unknown factors.... I'm terrible with live plants.
This leaves any newborn guppies that drop feeling a little exposed. So far only a small handful have survived from the last two drops. I never make a move to rescue any of them anymore, because I really don't need a massive guppy family of nearly 100 like I used to have.. Sigh. @_@ I just leave the babies be and see if they make it on their own.
Even with no place to hide except the gravel and behind my tiny ammonia meter they have managed to make it a few weeks after birth. They're doing real good. They are super fast little things mind you, so that's probably why they've made it.
I'm going to have to crack open that bottle of clove oil once I redecorate my tank after Christmas. They're going to have so many more places to hide then. burning_eyes
