"Mamaaaaaa, c'moooooon!"

Ishizuke squealed, running as fast as she could wearing a snowsuit and dragging an adult who had no intention of going faster than a slow walk. The girl might have gotten Mercury out in the cold, but she couldn't take the physicist's hatred of weather and the outside away. Even the fact that snow was falling hard in fat flakes around them meant nothing to Mercury, who nestled closer into the collar of her elegantly cut wool blazer and pulled her hat down over her ears. Ishi skidded to a halt and turned, glaring indignantly at Mercury with her right eye.

"Mama, why you slooow?” she demanded plaintively. Mercury shook her head, her curls bouncing down her shoulders, and reached down to pull the flaps on the little girl’s hat down so they better covered her ears.

"Okay, little Ishi," she said softly, with a smile. "I'll go faster. Lead the way."

Ishi squealed joyfully and took off, trying simultaneously to run and scoop up a handful of snow to pelt her mother with. Mercury wasn't expecting that, and got a facefull of snow. She dropped the girl's hand while she tried to clean her glasses. Ishi giggled hystericaly and took off running.

"Mama can' catch meee!" she cackled.

"Oh look, some other person playing." Ashley, condescending as ever, said blankly, squinting throw the snow at the figures of child and (mother?) playing. "Go... play or something, Harper." She commanded her disillusioned son, who stood next to her with his arms folded and a sour look displayed on his face.

"You. Suck."

"Whatever. You think theres a coffee stand anywhere around here?"

"TAKE ME HOME!"

"I thought you liked this weather!"

"Not with YOU I don't!"

"Harper, I just don't understand where this ... disdain is coming from! To think, we were always so close when you were little..."

"You are insane.. SAVE MEEEEE!" The boy cried, sprinting through the snow toward the other two figures.

Ashley put a hand on her hip and tossed her head a little, rolling her eyes. "Yeah whatever. I'm gonna go find coffee."

Ishi was considerably slower and less maneuverable than the child sprinting in her direction, so when she finally realized that they were going to collide, she couldn't do much more than slow down and try to get out of the way. "Eeeek!" she squealed, having realized a while ago that shrieking of that sort often alerted people to her presence and inspired them to move out of her way. It was quite convenient, usually. Without Harper ever touching her, the small girl lost her balance, fell over, and looked startled. She wasn't hurt, though. Thick layers of insulation from cold helped with that.

Mercury hadn't sped up much when Ishizuke started running, though she did pick up her pace when it looked like her daughter was going to encounter someone considerably larger than her in a very unpleasant way for the little girl. She didn't want poor Ishi mown down; the girl didn't get to go out in public much as it was, and she wanted those experiences to be good ones.

"Hey there!" she called, roughly simultaneous with Ishi's squeal. "Careful of the girl!"

And she broke into a trot, wishing she had brought a scarf. It was much too cold out to be enjoying herself, no mater what Ishi thought of the snow. Which seemed to be getting thicker.

Oh, joy.

Like some fantastic cow flying over the moon, Harper had kept charging until he got to the fallen baby before leaping over her head. "HA!" He announced triumphantly, jumping around to face her, "Freedom!" He announced, grinning, quite proud of himself. "Hello there, dudette." He said, waving happily, before passing his glance to the oncoming parental figure. "Hi."

Ishi's eyes widened hugely when Harper hurdled her and she scrambled to her feet and waddled after him as soon as he had cleared her head. "Cooooool!" she said loudly, giggling and flailing a little bit, almost losing her balance. She paused when the boy addressed her, not a hundred percent sure what he just said.

"I'm Ishi," she said, pointing at her own chest. "Not...you said. Ishi," she repeated once, making sure that the pale-haired boy had gotten her point. "Like hair," she said brightly, pointing to Harper's head and grinned. "Who's you?"

"Who are," Mercury corrected breezily, walking over and smiling warmly at Harper. "Hello yourself," she said, reaching down to make sure little Ishizuke was okay before turning and looking at the boy. "That was quite the jump," she said with a smile. "You out here alone?"

She almost frowned at that; the boy was too young to be running around after dark, even if it was only half-past five. Ishi squealed as soon as Mercury came near, picking up another handful of snow and hitting her in the face with it.

Harper blinked. "Whaaa?" He shrugged, and waved both hands at the little girl, "Okayyy, Ishi, dudette." He glanced to Mercury and crossed his eyes. Correcting the grammar of a baby? Oh, she was bound to be fun. "I'm Harper.. might as well be." He said, glancing back from where he came for the silhouette of his mother. "Why?! I'm big enough to be out here alone!!" He said, indignantly slapping his hands on his hips.

"She's a cabbage kid, ain't she?"

"I admit," Mercury said dryly, wiping snow off her face and raising her eyebrows at her daughter until the girl looked down sheepishly and mumbled a noncommittal something that may have been an apology. Mercury shook her head and scooped her up before finishing her sentence. "To some suprise that you recognized her origins. But yes, she is a cabbage child. How could you tell?

"Harper!" Ishizuke said brightly, reaching out and trying to take a handful of the boy's hair. It was the same colours as hers, only with more white than yellow. "Hair!" she said excitedly, and then giggled.

Mercury maneuvered the child out of the way and set her down on the ground. "Careful," she warned as Ishi toddled excitedly toward Harper again. "She seems to be at a hair-pulling stage."

Ishi ignored her and smiled excitedly up at Harper. She had never seen a person his size before! There were Mama and Da, then her sister Angelique, who was big, and Renna, their guest, who was also big. And she had a friend her size. But she had never seen someone bigger than her and smaller than Mama. She was confused but excited by it. Curious.

Harper grinned, shrugging a bit. "I dunno, maybe I heard stuff at school, I'm a popular guy, you know?! - plus, I think Eliot said..." He blinked, "She's allergic to sun, right? COOOOL! I thought he was makin it up - Ow!" He cringed when his hair was pulled, hastily pushing her fingers away to rearrange his hair in it's proper place. "That's my hair, dudette! So uncool!" He scolded, bending down to get a better look at her. "You're pretty cute, despite that thin." He said, moving to poke the scarred half of her face. "Kinda disappointing, I thought you'd be a vampire or something."

Oh! Mercury's somewhat confused expression smoothed into excited surprise, and she grinned warmly at Harper. "Oh, you're Eliot's, then?" she asked. "Nice to meet you." She had almost completely forgotten that conversation. What a pleasant coincidence to meet the boy without having planned anything! "And, yes, she is allergic to sunlight. Winter's nice for her, because we can go out before her bedtime."

Ishi paused and looked wide-eyed at Harper, then mumbled a quick, "Sorry," when she realized that she had accidentally hurt him. Then she grinned winningly at him. 'Cute' was a word she recognized, but she flinched when Harper's finger made contact with her face. Squeaking quietly, she turned her head so only the unscarred half of her face--and only the eye she could see with--were exposed directly to the boy. She smiled in a lopsided way and then reached out and touched Harper's shoulder. "Thank'u for cute," she said. Mercury blinked. She hadn't heard the girl thank anyone yet.

Of course, Ishi ruined it by reaching up to poke at Harper's lower eyelid, giggling and saying, "Blue!"

"NO!" Harper said haughtily, deeply offended, "I'm not Eliot's! I'm Ashley's!.. .. WAIT! I'M NOBODY'S!" He crossed his arms and glared at Mercury for a moment, shaking his head at her. "Eliot just picks me up from school sometimes, that's all."

He shook his head at Ishi, "You know, theres a dude in batman called two-face who kinda looks like you." It was totally not an insult in Harper's head. "But.." Quickly, he blinked as the finger came at his eye, rubbing at it when she was finished with the poke. "Yeah. It won't come off. It's okay, right, makes me look different and cool. You too!"

Ishi tilted her head to one side, smiling brightly when Harper mentioned Batman, then looked at Mercury. "Batman!" she said brightly, and Mercury almost grimaced. She'd thus far avoided having to deal with superhero cartoons, but, like the rest of popular entertainment, she knew it would have to come out eventually.

...at least it would be a break from fluffy talking animals and super-romanticized princesses.

And then she realized that she had offended Harper. "Oh, I'm sorry. But you do live in the same house as Eliot, right?" she asked kindly, already knowing the answer but seeking to mitigate the child's anger.

Ishi, meanwhile, had latched onto the fact that Harper was calling her cool. "Cool!" she said, almost squealed. "You cool too! Right! We cool?" she asked, looking at the older and obviously much smarter boy for confirmation.

Harper gave a heavy sigh, "Yeaaaah, I guess. He ain't home that much when I am, though, so. NOT REALLY." He said, sticking his tongue out at Mercury. "Why? You one of the stupid girls that buys him things?"

He shook his head at her as though she were pathetic then looked at Ishi.

"Yeah, okay, we're cool! Dunno about your mom though!" He said happily, grinning at her. "You go to the daycare ever, dudette? Meet the other babies? I still remember that place. Was pretty fun till Jace showed up."

Mercury looked bewildered when Harper's face fell. Then she laughed. "No, I actually met him in a restaurant, and somehow or another, you came up in conversation." She recalled her experience with the pair of men and almost chuckled, suddenly understanding Harper's almost-disdain.

Ishi paused and then frowned slightly. "No, I stay home, can' go in sun. Huuuuuurts," she said, nodding solemnly. Then her slight frown deepened when Harper mentioned Jace. She had met Jacoba once, and the little girl had, frankly, terrified her. “I don’ like,” she said slowly and thoughtfully. “She scary.” And then she nodded and picked up another handful of snow. She regarded it thoughtfully and then tossed it at Harper.

"Snooooow!"

"I always come up in the conversation." Harper said with a grin, before dismissing Mercury again. He was more or less determined at this point not to like her, basically because he just wanted to!

"I don' like either." Harper said, curling his lips at Ishi. "She's evil you know. No, really, evil. And her mother is, too. She's gonna be your math teacher someday, sorry, dudette. The sun hurts huh? That must... suck..." He said blankly, looking up at the sky.

And then he was hit with snow and was lost in 'thought' for a second before picking up a considerably larger pile of snow and throwing it at the baby's head, with some disregard for her size and age altogether.

Ishi tilted her head, not really understanding what Harper was saying to her, and grinned when she realized he was agreeing with her. Harper didn't like the scary red-headed girl either!

And then a mass of snow was dumped over her head and she shrieked, waving her arms and squealing angrily before picking up another mass of snow and winging it at Harper. "NO!" she screeched, wiping the snow from her eyes with one and hand then looking around for more snow to throw. Despite her anger, her expression was one of wild happiness, albeit slightly wicked.

Mercury shook her head and watched the pair quietly, expression mildly amused. If Ishi stopped looking happy, she might intervene. As it were, she let the girl have fyun. God knew she didn't get enough as it was.
