I'm not sure if this has been posted before, I'm sorry if it has...

so anyways. I'm always wondering how houses in Japan are like. confused I know that there are a lot of apartments, and stuff, but are the houses as small? And how is the design of a house over there, do they have any gardens, and are they all two floors and really close together? confused

anyone had this question before??? If anyone has lived in one or can tell me I'd really appreciate it. >_<

I lived in two different houses. Both were quite small compared to houses in America. They were both two-story, but the rooms themselves were just smaller. Most of the houses I saw also only had small gardens in front, and yes they were generally two-story and pretty close together, though there is always a wall surrounding the entire property.

My friend lived in a fairly large house in Japan, but it was nowhere near the size you would expect for a family with a similar income in the U.S.

I did have another friend who lived out in a rural area and her family had a very large Japanese-style house, but I don't think these are very typical (I'm pretty sure her family was rich)

Here's kind of a picture of the one I lived in. I think it might look bigger than it actually was. I remember when I first got home to America and realizing just how much bigger my own house is.

I've never been there myself, but I can guess that the Japanese are accustomed to living in smaller quarters than the US. The entire country of Japan is smaller than some of the US's states; I remember hearing that there's about 128 ppl per square mile living in Tokyo. I'm sure the suburbs and the countryside aren't that extreme, but you get the idea...

At least in traditional houses, and in many modern apartments (to my understanding), the living room is also the dining room and the family bedroom. Their spaces may be small, but they know how to make every inch count.
