Perhaps we could start with the Leviathan? Leviathan - WikipediaWikipedia LeviathanFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search This article is about the biblical creature. For other uses, see Leviathan (disambiguation). "Destruction of Leviathan". 1865 engraving by Gustave Doré. "Destruction of Leviathan". 1865 engraving by Gustave Doré. Leviathan (Hebrew: לִוְיָתָן, Standard Livyatan Tiberian Liwyāṯān ; "Twisted; coiled") was a Biblical sea monster referred to in the Old Testament (Psalm 74:13-14; Job 41; Isaiah 27:1). The word leviathan has become synonymous with any large sea monster or creature. In the novel Moby-d**k it refers to great whales, and in Modern Hebrew, it means simply "whale".

Yes, very good Mel! I should say, what kind of monster could stand a chance against a leviathan? Maybe one that could use electric powers somehow? I remember you could summon one of those in FF7. 3nodding

They are worth of mention of course but, I'm not sure if the unicorn would actually qualify as a beast. After all, they're so graceful and beautiful that they seem more like gentle creatures than beasts. I included one on a story of mine (my very first one) and it needs a lot of editing. I don't know when to being with that! mrgreen

hypnocrown Yes, very good Mel! I should say, what kind of monster could stand a chance against a leviathan? Maybe one that could use electric powers somehow? I remember you could summon one of those in FF7. 3nodding There is a legend that the Leviathan and the Behemoth shall hold a battle at the end of the world. The two will finally kill each other, and the surviving men will feast on their meat. According to midrash recording traditions, it is impossible for anyone to kill a behemoth except for the person who created it, in this case the God of the Hebrews. A later Jewish haggadic tradition furthermore holds that at the banquet at the end of the world, the behemoth will be served up along with the Leviathan and Ziz. In Jewish belief, Behemoth is the primal unconquerable monster of the land, as Leviathan is the primal monster of the waters of the sea and Ziz the primordial monster of the sky. Will you look at that? And here I was thinking that the Midgar Zolom was some kind of original creation. This is also Norse mythology, right? Sometimes I have trouble distinguishing them. mrgreen
You know, I am starting to wonder if the Behemoth and the Bahamuth are kinda like that. I mean, did the creators of FF7 made the Bahamuth after the Behemoth or what? Maybe I should do a search but I hardly have time for it right now... rolleyes

Aha, you're right - but I've known about this for some time. wink
Bahamut is apparently Arabic and was originally believed to be some kind of giant fish (makes a difference from an enormous dragon?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahamut
However, he's seen as the King of (good) Dragons in other things like Dungeons and Dragons, whereas Tiamat is the Queen of (evil) Dragons.
BUT! But but but but...... I have heard of a dragon-like demon that has a very similar name. I just can't remember what it was now though. I think that one was Norse as well, but I'm not sure.
--------------------------------------
Quetzalcoatl is from Aztec mythology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatl
Shiva is a Hindu god, not goddess. Shiva is originally a male deity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva
Ifrit is Arabic, meaning an embodiment of fire (at least they got that one right). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ifrit
--------------------------------------
If someone can find out about that dragon-demon, that'd be great. I keep searching and I keep getting the same thing about Bahamut being a giant fish in Arabic mythology. I know for a fact that I have seen a variation of the name Bahamut being the name of a dragon-like demon that I believe was originally Scandinavian.

Liviathan, and Bahamut, it seems that the sea is full of monsters. Perhaps it is because people have long feared the great width and icy depths of the seas that they imagine it to be home to some of the largest and most terrifying of the mythical beasts. Another famous sea monster is the Kraken. Kraken ( kra’ ken, IPA: /ˈkrɑːkɛn/) are legendary sea monsters of gargantuan size, said to have dwelt off the coasts of Norway and Iceland. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the beasts have made them common ocean-dwelling monsters in various fictional works (see Kraken in popular culture). The legend may actually have originated from sightings of real giant squid that are estimated to grow to 13 metres (46 feet) in length, including the tentacles. These creatures normally live at great depths, but have been sighted at the surface and reportedly have "attacked" small ships. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraken

The Griffin Great guardian beasts of both the sky and the land, said to be the offspring of both the lions, the kings of the beasts, and the eagles, the kings of the birds and the sky. Like dragons, they hoard gold and defend precious things, often keeping their stashes in caves under mountains. Griffins are also said to have immense strength. In legend, they frequently lift warriors off the battlefield, horse and all. And sometimes, they have even been known to battle dragons. When they reproduce, the female lays and egg that looks like an agate, which can often account for one of the reasons that thieves attempt to steal griffin eggs; they look like a large, valuable stone. Most strangely, griffins have a hatred of horses, possibly stemming from their war with the one-eyed Arimaspians, who were noted equestrians. Others have theorized that griffins simply like the taste of horse meat. Yay, griffins! Berz.
