The way I categorize any sort of metal is by the first album that sparked the genre. So most bands today have roots in, mainly Old Metallica (1980-1991) Slayer, Black Sabbath, and Death (first true death metal band) So if yoru having problems seperating modern alternative to death metal. As Far as Avenged Sevenfold is concerned, you could put them in the metal category or the alternative category. Mostly they are bridgeing because of their vocals. Not a lot of Singing in Metal, except in Megadeth's case. But ultimatly the choice is yours.
