((... is still family. *felt the need to finish the long title* 8D))

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Stumps didn't taste very good. And honestly, there wasn't much excitement to be found chewing on them. But in the absence of family, they were the next best thing when you just had to gnaw on something. Forepaws wrapped awkwardly around the large once-a-tree, Cope set his fangs to work. It had been this way since his birth. The horrible compulsion to chew and the loss of control that came when he didn't satisfy that need. Certainly there was no reason besides gratification. He had no poison to rid himself of, like his father. But perhaps that instinct just stuck with him.

Lifting his head from the chew toy, he let out a puff of breath, watching the smokiness float away in the chilly air. He knew the couches and other assorted odds and ends within the HQ were off limits when it came to his habit. And so, he was forced out into the less than pleasant weather. Shivering slightly, he tried to forget the cold as he when back to scraping his fangs along the wood, tails flicking out behind him and nothing on his mind any longer but the task at hand.

User ImageFledge was stumbling alongside of the large Nightmare rambling on and on about pies and cookies and other sugary goods. If the Nightmare had eyes to roll he would have by now, however as he did not he simply continued on his way keeping silent (well except for that wheezy breathing of his) as the guardian continued to 'chat'. "-which is exactly why you can't mix those kind of things together. -You know what I mean Dementor? Those kinds of fruits would completly dull down the tast of the sugary sweetness." Dementor simply grunted at Fledge's question, his long scabby ears rotating forward.

"..Do..you he..ar that..Fledge..?" he soon asked, as the almost slient sound of something like sawing. The male frowned as Fledge was unable to hear it. His pace sped up just slightly, but still remained a walk. It was times like this that a guardian that was not blind like he was would have come in handy. So many time it would have been useful to have something around so he could use them to see. His ability to suck out anothers soul did come with the ability to sense souls, but really that was a very limited form a vision.

The chilling cold did not seem to be bothering either Dementor or Fledge, their heavy black cloaks with their added short fur clearly gave them some extra warmth. Dementor's tails swayed slowly behind him as the scratching sound grew louder in his ears. He was just about straining to hear it, but it was there.

"So are we just going to listen for this sound of yours, or are we going to continue this debate of the misuse of fruits and sugar treats?"

Boredom kept fangs scraping against wood, even after Cope was sure he could go at least a few more hours without it. Sleeping, eating, and being generally lazy wasn't exactly fun. And while normally he would occupy his time with running around in the grass, the frosty, frozen dew had him slipping all over the place just a little earlier. In fact, some of his fur still stuck up in a funny manner. He'd neglected to groom it down before it dried.

The wind blew and he lifted his head from the stump. Banded ears strained forward, flicking now and then against the gentle gusts. Brows furrowed curiously. Despite the volume of his own gnawing, he was positive he'd heard something. "Must've been the wind," he mused, grinning toothily and once again eyeing his prize. But as the wind died down and something else barely tickled his senses, he lifted his shoulders, looking out further over the area. Tails flicked away as he stood.

It had probably been nothing more than a branch creaking or a leaf crinkling. Still, curiosity led him away from the stump. Icy eyes blinked as he lowered his head to the ground. Tentative paws gripped at the earth, instinctively remembering just how easily they'd been tripped up before.

Dementor snorted, his tails fliping towards Fledge, giving the guardian a little tap. He was not going to talk to to the little critter about fruit and sugar. The Nightmare's scabby ears pressed against his tan horn as he shifted his gaze towards his guardian. He had been certain that he had heard something, and it was pretty much just his hearing he had to use to get himself around so it certainly could not be that he was simply 'hearing things'.

His head perked up, boney maw pointing up towards the sky. "Yes..some..one is..there.." came his raspy wheezing voice as he spoke to the little cloaked guardian. "Fledge..you ne..ed to..work..on your..sen..ses.."

The little guardian frowned. "But my senses are fine. How else would I know the wonders of sugar?" He wouldn't if his senses weren't good. He would know nothing of the sort if his senses weren't...amazing. Yes, his senses were perfectly fine and quite amazing. Mainly his sense of taste.

Dementor paused in his steps, his head still held high. He could sense the other now, though pinpointing them was proving to be a tad harder. "Who..is there..?" he called out, ears rotating forward to listen if he were to get a reply.

Long ears flicked, knowing full well that it hadn't just been the wind this time. However, it took longer for the male's head to rise from the ground. And even when he finally began to rise, it was slow and contemplative. Ears moved again, waiting to see if something else would be said. The voice had been strange and unfamiliar. Cope couldn't say that it didn't unnerve him just a little bit.

When no other words came, he decided to answer. After all, he could either be sociable with company or a scaredy cat alone. If there was one thing he wasn't, it was a scaredy cat. Besides, having a family like his prepared him for nearly anything.

"I'm..." he started, still walking forward with eyes scanning for the one he was supposedly conversing with now. Stepping around a tree, he was surprised to come across the Nightmare and his guardian. The large breed was a rare sight for him. Ears slid back before he remembered he'd been speaking. "Cope. I'm Cope." A toothy grin slipped to his maw. A force of habit, despite knowing that stitched up eyes most certainly couldn't see it.

The pale cloaked Nightmare remained where he was, ears remaining upwards listening for every and any sound. The male's brow raised momentarily when no response came, but soon returned to its prior position. A voice had finally replied. It had simply been the word 'I'm' and nothing more. It wasn't until Dementor could sense and see the other's soul that they had started talking once more. "Cope......Your so..ul seems..fam..iliar.." came the male's raspy voice.

"We don't know anyone named Cope. How can it be famili-" Fledge was cut off by the Nightmare's large paw coming down ontop of him. Dementor was always doing things like that. Not that it hurt or anything as the Nightmare was gentle with it, but still. Fledge liked to talk.

"I am..Dementor..and the..annoying..one is..Fledge.." the male let out a rather wheezy chuckle. It was sounds like that in which new members of the household back home would question Dementor about his health. The Nightmare would never understand such things, but he had of course grown up with that rasp and that wheeze. It was simply the way he spoke, breathed and the like, which was where Fledge's little normal high pitched voice came in handy..Well when Dementor's own voice was tired, and really only then.

Familiar? It was a strange thing to say, he thought. Although views on normality were often a matter of upbringing. So, he supposed as he thought on it more, it wasn't such a strange thing to say. It was just that Cope had never been able to see or feel someone's soul before. Was that something one could do by nature? Perhaps it was an acquired ability. One of necessity? Normal eyesight was out of the question, after all.

Lost in his own musings, he'd nearly forgotten to answer. It was only the firm paw on the babbling little guardian that pulled him from the swirling world of contradictions that was his mind. "He's not so bad," Cope offered with a smile, eyeing the smaller cloaked figure who had been put in his place. But for how long? There was something that tugged the corner of his mouth further. This guardian didn't seem like one to be silenced for long. Just an observation. "Well, I'm glad to meet you, Dementor, but..." The smile faltered a bit, banded ears sliding back a bit and flicking gently at the tips. "Do I really seem familiar?" No one had told him that before. And despite the nagging something at the back of his mind, he focused mainly on just how he could be familiar to someone he'd never met.

A large ear rotated, as Cope called Fledge 'not so bad'. A bit of a smile had shown up at the corner of the Nightmare's maw as he arched a brow momentarily. "Th..at's what..they al...ways say..at...first.." he chuckled. Some found right away that the little guardian was annoying, and others found him tolerable..That was until they lived with him for a week, oh then their tunes changed. The little guy had a way of getting on your nerves, with the random questions, love for sweets and oh gosh..singing.

It was when Cope asked if he really seemed familiar, that Dementor removed his paw from atop of Fledge. The little guardian getting up and brushing off his cloak as best he could without sight. Slowly Dementor began to circle around Cope, quite well for a Nightmare in fact, being able to see his soul, sense it certainly had its perks. "..Yes.." came his reply as he returned to the front of the other male. "There is...some...thing..about y..ou..So..mething..I know.." His tails began to sway behind him. What was it? What was that feeling, that spark of something he knew deep down in the other's soul?

Intuition must've been correct. Cope could do little but laugh, not fully understanding, as he certainly hadn't had the chance to live with the guardian for a week. If asked now, he probably would've named Fledge's antics entertaining. After all, spending a good amount of life alone was far from exciting most of the time. But for now he would take his elder's word for it. He had no strong evidence to disprove any theories, nor did he have an urge to argue. It would be a pointless venture.

"Something you know...?" Tails swished out as he took a seat, allowing himself to be circled, but still following the other's movements with a curious gaze. Now tails swished back around, covering paws in an instinctual movement. Many of his kind had such a habit, he'd observed, despite how little protection tails truly offered. Well, he had fangs for such occasions, no matter how strangely worn and filed they were from a lifetime of chewing on not so healthy objects. "Like what?" He tried to help. It was a bit difficult. "Something you know like... someone you know?" The masked Kitsu canted his head lightly as the nightmare moved to his back.

Curious. Very curious. It was odd how he couldn't quite tell what was so familiar about the boy, it knew there was something there, but it was proving diffcult to find out just what. He didn't know him, no he knew that, and yet in a way it did seem like he knew him. The familiarity of Cope's soul just creeping about.

"I really don't see how he could be like anyone we know." came Fledge's reply, as he wandered inbetween Dementor's forepaws. "You don't soul like anyone that we know, we've never met before. I don't know what he's going on about." The little guardian folded his arms. "Really what we should be doing is trying to find some candy or something, aren't you hungry. Not trying to find out why his soul seems like something you know."

Dementor grunted, casting a 'glance' to his little guardian. "Fledge..how many..ti..mes do..I have..to re..mind you..I do..n't eat.." Ok so he did eat, just not anything...normal. His attention returned to Cope, scabby ears perking up. "Perhaps..Who..are you..re..lated to..?" Souls did carry a certain likeness to others in one's family, so perhaps this boy was a son of a friend or something of the sort.

"You don't eat?" The statement hadn't been directed at him. That didn't keep him from getting curious, however. "Don't you get hungry?" Candy sounded rather pleasant, he thought. Especially considering his still had a stale wood taste in his mouth. At least now his fangs weren't itching for a bite. That probably wouldn't be the best way to get to know someone so much larger and more foreboding than he. But despite the reputation that came along with nightmares, he didn't feel at all threatened by this one.

Canting his head, he looked thoughtful for a moment. Though he loved his family quite a bit, he hadn't actually met all of them. Ah well, he supposed he wouldn't need a laundry list to explain his lineage to Dementor. "I've got three siblings," he started, eyes glinting at the thought of them. "Our parents are Charity and Terasu." Was that enough? He tried to think harder on it. "Papa's told me about Setsumi, my grandmother, but I haven't met her yet. And from when I was born... I sort of remember Grandma Nessa's voice and another voice, too. And Aunty Atae..." So lost was he in his remembering that he nearly forgot he was speaking to someone other than himself.

The look on the Nightmare's face was a tad serious, his cloak rippling as he shifted his wright. "I do..get..hun..gry now..and..then.." he spoke with his raspy breaths. "Just n..ot for..food.." Slowly Dementor sat upon his haunches, tails resting at his side. "Souls..Happy th..oughts..all the..posi..tive emo..tions..that is..what I..consu..me.." When what you ate things like souls you didn't seem to get too hungry too fast. Eat maybe once in a while. Sucking positive emotions from the air was like a snack, but it kept the male filled and ment that there would be more souls out there for him to devower when he really needed it. Point in place, Dememtor didn't really eat often.

"Yeah. That's just wrong. I really don't think that stuff tastes good. Sweets are much better."

It was at the mention of Charity and Nessa that the Nightmare perked up. Nessa, he knew that name. He knew it well. And he had heard of Charity, never met, but he did know about her. Yes, well this was an unforseen event. Family. He was family. "Heh..Nessa is..your..grand..mother..Well th-"

"Woah. Woah. WOAH!" Fledge shouted, shaking his head and waving around his chubby little hands. "Nessa? As in your DAUGHTER?!" If Fledge had eyes they certainly would have grown wide. "So you're a great grandpa, since when! Boy Dementor you're getting old."

"You're..as old..as I..am..Fledge.."

Stuff like that... Did it taste good? Curious eyes looked to Fledge, who spoke ill of his charge's choice of sustenance. Certainly it couldn't be that bad. After all, happy thoughts, positive emotions, these seemed like nice things. If Cope had any idea how one ate such a snack, he was sure it would taste interesting, to say the least. In didn't occur to him that Dementor literally sucked these things out of the air and others and could leave them cold and unhappy if he so chose. Regardless, he wasn't one for sweets, himself. Fruits were okay, they were just sweet enough. But he preferred meat and proteins. Hearty things that satisfied his craving to chew, if only for a while, and made him full and happy in the process.

Shooing away the thought of a fresh rabbit, he looked back to the larger male, momentarily confused by the air of knowing that surrounded all but himself. Banded ears slid back when the guardian's call assaulted them. So focused on grasping each raspy word, he'd no idea an answer would come flying at him from below. "'Your daughter'?" he repeated, blinking once, twice, slightly confused for a moment. Then it clicked and he was reassured by Fledge's continued exclamation. So, this was his great grandfather?

"I didn't even know I had a great grandfather," he revealed with a laugh, leaning back on his haunches a bit. He deemed it wise not to comment on the 'old' part of the conversation, instead grinning toothily at his blind companions. "How small the world is." A nightmare for a great grandfather. Not many generics such as himself could claim something like that.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 21, 2008 7:04 pm

Dispite the fact that Dementor enjoyed sucking away all the positive thoughts in the area leaving people cold and unhappy he tried not to. He was rather kind for a Nightmare, depending on who was around him. He'd save sucking happiness from the air for when he was around those he didn't like, those who threatened him or his family, or when he was starting to get hungry.

Dementor smiled with a nod, "Yes.." His tails flicked before stilling. "I was..n't aware..I had..a great..grandson.." he chuckled, it seemed like just yesterday he had found out that he was a grandfather, and now he seemed to be a great grandfather. "The fam..ily is..quite big..so I supp..ose I sho..uldn't be..too sur..prised."

"But we're OOOOLLLDD!" the little guardian whined, as it finaly sunk into his little head that he was as old as Dementor.

"Is it really that big?" Cope asked, the question falling from his mouth in a hasty curiosity. Family had always been important to him. Even from the time he'd hatched, he liked to think. After all, he had been surrounded by immediate members of the family at his escape from the shell. Okay, so he had been distracted by his brother and sisters. But when they chewed on him, he'd been obliged to chew right back. Didn't mean he couldn't hear the mumbles of larger voices above him, of course. "I'd like to meet everyone someday," he revealed with a laugh, knowing full well that having a large family would make that task a bit difficult.

Casting a sympathetic glance to Fledge, he tried not to laugh again. "Families just grow fast, I'm sure. I doubt you're that old." It had felt like his childhood went by in the blink of an eye, anyway.
