Sohalia exhaled slowly, the silver of her horn glowing dully in the dim light of the day. Her breath hovered before her and then dissipated, and she cast a glance skywards, looking warily at the heavy sky.
An early snow? she mused as she wandered along, a striking black mark against the leaf littered ground. The trees around her clawed at the air with their bare branches, her ears flickered listening to the birds that hung around the area during winter call to each other as they wheeled around above her. She shivered, and carried on walking, heading for the Lake, a strand of her mane in her mouth as chewed on it in an absent fashion.
At the waters edge, the hair was dropped and she drank, digging her front hooves in to prevent slipping on the sodden mud. 'C-c-cold..' she chattered out loud, the water had an icy bite to it, and she rubbed her chilly nose and mouth on a raised fore-leg. Sohalia looked across the Lake, scanning the banks as far as she could see. There didnt appear to be any sign of life, movement, anything. From the hoof prints she had seen, this was a highly populated area, but she had yet to meet any in the flesh. She would stand a while, she decided, and then make her way back to the copse of trees she had been using as a shelter since arriving.

The breeze picked up, stinging the hide of Sohalia. Shortly after a shape overhead cast a brief shadow of her. It circled around, the passed over again. A small stallion was in the air, playing with the wind as if it was a physical being, gliding, flapping, falling, and climbing on shimmering purple wings.
He performed a long, lazy loop in the air, catching a brief look at the unicorn below him as he was suspended in air. He smiled and began his decent, circling like a buzzard until silver hooves finally touched the ground. The air was a cold, and the evidence was clear on the stallion’s face. His ears and nose were bright red and despite the smile on his lips, his teeth chattered slightly.
”Hello!” he called friendlily, nodding to the beautiful mare.

Sohalia shivered once more, strange, now it seemed as if the wintery breeze was centred on her. She cast a glance upwards, watching the circling, acrobatic Soquili that was in flight above her. She moved back a little, uncertain as to how much room he would need to land, having never had wings, she wasnt knowledgable about how easy it was to land.
Once he had, she noticed that he was not as tall as her, and she bent one knee, bowing in return of his greeting. He certainly was graceful however, his wings a delicate work of natural art, his whole being exceptionally pleasing to anyones eye. 'Hello yourself.' she replied. 'Colder up there then?' her keen ears had picked up the slight chatter of the stallion's teeth.

"Its a bit nippy up in the wind," he understated, already puffing up his fur and starting to warm up. He looked up at her, being slightly shorter, and tossed his mane back to keep his mane in check, for it kept falling over his eyes. "I didn't know anyone was watching. I'm trying to master flying. I got my daddy's wings but my mother's bulk, so its hard to find a balance."
He then put his head down into a bow, his mane falling in a shimmering flow over his face. "My name is Spellbound," he said as he came back up, tossing the unruly locks behind his neck again, "May I inquire into yours?"

She nodded, listening to the stallion as he spoke. He seemed friendly, chatty even. She was not so talkative, much of what she felt or thought she tended to keep to herself.
'I had not meant to watch,' Sohalia replied, looking at the wings he bore, curious as to how something so seemingly fragile looking could support him in flight. 'You made a breeze, and it seemed a little localised, it was what made me look upwards.'
She tilted her head as he gave his name so soon, so freely. How curious that he should give such knowledge so easily, and quickly after meeting her. 'You may inquire I suppose, there would little stopping you from asking,' she said in an evasive fashion. She did not want to appear rude, but it was not in her nature to be so open.

"Its okay," he said with a happy smile, "I don't mind you watching. I just hope I didn't look as uncordinated as I felt. I'm still getting the hang of it."
Spellbound, however, looked taken aback and alittle confused at her cryptic answer when he asked for her name. He thought he was being polite… both his parents told him how important it was to properly introduce yourself. “Er, uhm….” He pawed at the ground nervously. “Sorry to bother you?”

Sohalia shook her head; 'I would never pass judgement on a skill I do not have.' she said, flicking her tail so that the curled ends flicked around her rear hooves.
She looked at him shrewdly, taking in his reaction to her evasive answer. His whole attitude spoke of his confusion; she supposed that it was something to do with his youth, for he had a definate air of it about him, and she guessed that he would consider himself a more proficient flier if he were older. 'You are not bothering me. You asked if you could ask what my name was.' she replied, with a teasing air. 'And therefore I answered that you could.' She shook her mane, the jewels adorning it catching the dull light and glinting slightly. She took pity on the young male and answered him; 'My name is Sohalia. You have family in these parts?' she inquired.

Spellbound pawed at the ground a bit nervously, this mysterious and cryptic mare unlike any other Soquili he had ever met. His parents were so gregarious, his brother Sumi was rude and straightforward, and his other brother Nimbus was shy, but certainly not... like this.
"Oh," he nodded a bow again, "Well, uhm, nice to meet you Sohalia. That's a very pretty name."
His tail flicked back and forth behind him as he tried to regain his confidence. "Yes I do, I live with Balrog's herd on the mountain. My father is Azure, and my mother Kamiki." He looked rather proud of this face, searching up at Sohalia's face for a sign of recognition.

'Thank you,' Sohalia acknowledged the compliment with a gracious smile, casting a glance skywards again, eyeing the endless grey that spread above them. 'Do you not find it cold there? I would think that it is colder still then in the valleys around here.'
She tilted her head as he spoke of and named his parents. Again with the freely given information! How strange to be so open. 'I do not know them sorry. I am new to these parts.' She would tell him that, the knowledge that she was a newcomer gave nothing more away. 'I am guessing that you are not more than a few months born?' she inquired. Just because she was guarded, did not mean that on occasion she wasn't curious. She could carry on a conversation..just as long it wasnt about herself!

Spellbound followed her gaze up to the sky. “Oh, its cold,” he said. His fur still stood upright but his teeth no longer chattered in his jaw. “But Balrog says that the elements should not make us weak, because if a predator strikes, he will not be merciful because the wind is cold.”
He rolled his shoulders and shook his mane out of his eyes again. “Ah, well welcome!” he said enthusiastically as she said she was new. “I like it here, of course… it’s the only place I’ve been… but I like it.”
He pawed at the ground a bit sheepishly as she so accurately pinpointed his age. He was certainly brand new to stallion-hood, but he had hoped it wasn’t so plain to see. “Yeah, I guess I’m pretty, young, huh?” He opened his mouth to ask how old she was, but at the last moment figured that was probably not a good idea.

Sounds like a real laid back stallion Sohalia mused. She wouldn't voice her opinion, it wasn't really her place and she didn't want to get involved in inter-herd politics.
'I suppose that could be true,' she merely replied in an offhand fashion. She gave Spellbound a smile. 'Thank you. I am sure you'll explore these lands more when you are ready to.' she replied in an encouraging fashion, and then addressed his question. 'You have a youthful exuberance yes, but not annoyingly so.' she fell silent for a moment.
'Have you explored much of the area?' she inquired. Standing in one position was allowing her to feel the cold, and her legs were feeling a little numb. 'We should walk, I fear I may be frozen here soon.' she joked.

“Not too much,” Spellbound replied to her question about exploring. “My mom didn’t like me to go too far from the herd when I was young. I live on the mountain, so I know that place a lot, but not too much past that.”
The young stallion visibly relaxed as she told him he wasn’t annoying, and even made a joke herself. “Walking’s fine,” he said with a smile, tossing his mane again and leading the way off away from the mud. “Was it cold where you were from? My mom says her old herd lived somewhere where it was never cold.”

'Maybe you'll show me the mountains in the summer then? I've never been fond of the cold.' Sohalia confessed with a faint grimace as she followed the young stallion. She appreciated the beauty of the winter months, especially how peaceful the land looked when draped in a blanket of snow, but she appreciated the cold.
'No, not all. Quite the opposite in fact,' she replied, without thinking. She wondered what it was that was making her want to chatter away to this prettily winged fellow. Probably the fact that he didnt understand why she was being so very cautious. In life she had learned that the more someone knew, the more chances they had to inflict pain on you.
'Our winters were very short, I am curious to see how I will cope with my first proper winter. Snow only lasted a day if that..' she walked on, trailing behind him in quiet for a while, keeping alert as they moved.

“I can’t wait to see the mountains in summer,” Spellbound said, looking up at them in the distance. “I bet they are beautiful” He enjoyed the walking, getting his blood flowing again in his veins and he started to warm up. “That surprises me,” he confessed to the mare, “For some reason I would imagine you would come from somewhere with a lot of cold. Guess it must because of your long mane and tail. They look soft and warm, like something that would be nice to curl up in when its cold.” He gave her a genial smile.

'I ate my greens when I was a filly, and it made my hair grow,' Sohalia quipped with a little smile. She shook her mane, the ends of it flaring out a little before swishing back by her moving hooves.
'I would imagine so, you'll see the rarest blooms on the mountains in summer, or so I am told.' she said in an enigmatic fashion as they carried on walking, her breath coming out in little cloud-like puffs, her legs slowly feeling warmer.
'So little butterfly, whereabouts are you leading me to?' she asked after all, curious as to Spellbound's destination. Not that she had any great where to be, she was just adding to her internal map as they moved, and it would help to know where they heading from where they had been.
