No, this is not a relationship post. It has to do with this forum.

I say with due humility I am a fairly intelligent person. I write well, express myself clearly (and thus in the world of internet drivel am heads above the majority of the populous that seem to use Gaia most. Chatterbox, anyone? *shudder*) HOWEVER, I am by NO means a debater. I barely passed a required public speaking class that mentioned a "red herring" but certainly didn't pursue it further as I could get my college credit focusing on poetry redface . Therefore, as I read through the guild I am feeling a bit, well, TERRIFIED.

But, ya'll, I really AM interested and TRYING to learn. I am reading threads... STUDYING them as if there were going to be tests on them. But I have to admit, I think I would still be trying to find out if there were extra credit assignments I could do to make up the work because I am feeling LOOOOST!

I guess what I am wondering is, Debate "class" wise, if we were on a curve, how bad am I? Am I the dumbest girl in class? Would I be flirting with the professor? Or are others the same level but quieter about it ("Better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt")? Just curious...

I'm not sure. I have not been in any debates with you.

But you do know there are many different types of debaters and many different styles of debating. What kind of debater are you or trying to be? Are you only about the facts or do you not care about the facts as long you have sound reasoning? When you talk about a event do you only talk that event and nothing more or do you talk about other events and things that are close to the topic as well? There are lots of things to ask yourself to find out what kind of debater you are. But no one is good at all of them and not all styles of debating works in every debate.

As for me, I'm mostly play devil's advocate because I find it fun and it lets me think outside the box so to speck. Being a devil's advocate is not the only way I debate I just like styles that gives me the freedom to do what I want and change things on the fly. (I often go into debates unprepared so the things I say and do are made up on the spot.)

Debate is not the primary thing here. It's a big part of the fun - arguing your point of view with others and backing it up. I usually sound off on innocuous subjects that require OPINION, not hard facts. I can sling facts and statistics with the best of them but I debate here entirely for fun.
Usually!! Hit me with an obviously loaded opinion or bad fact and then I get [shudder], totally academic on someones back.
The key is relax, have fun and pipe in when you feel you have something relevant to say or if something just pushes your buttons.

XD Kiphuck, I personally think you could be a better debator than a lot of ED forum regulars. Maybe even in this guild.

The only things you really need to be able to debate are: an opinion, the ability to clearly convey your arguement, and I guess respect.

Btw, about that quote "Better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt" I disagree and don't think it's something people should consider when they have something thepy want to say. <------ (sounds like a topic ninja )

Provided you're curbing the ad hom and not committing too many appeals to tradition, you're ahead of most of the US population when it comes to this subject.

I get confused as all hell when someone starts arguing logic (the pure mathematical kind, Ps and Qs).

I'm with you here, Kipluck.
I consider myself pretty intelligent, and I try to be open to many opinions, but, frankly, I'm scared to state my own. xD In a guild like this, members are really digging deep into their minds for fantastic answers and debates, and I feel like a five-year old in college.

Or something to that extent.

well I don't know if you are bad or not but your post is a debate all you have to do is see how you do in discussions with your familly about say , your curfew time and judge yourself on those things
that is the hardest debate and if you can wwin it then you are good at debating
