Boredom – he absolutely abhorred it. It rankled his brain and twisted his ever-twitchy legs and tail. The sea was so deep and so wonderful, but sometimes its vastness kept his kind solitary, parted from one another in the echoless underground.

Angathi wasn’t always around to play with him, he finally figured out.

The colt figured that he had been swimming for hours – really only half an hour – and he had yet to find anyone with which he could 'spar' (since play was such a juvenile word and he was growing quite nicely!). He was physically drained, but he continued his quest in hopes of finding someone else who was searching just as he was.

A school of silver fish darted like a sheet of polished metal before him, catching the sparse light that filtered from the surface. Without much conviction, but with just enough to get him through, he shot like a missile into the group and scattered them like tiny nickels in every direction.

Any form of amusement would keep him sane. As he watched the fish find one another and form a fine cloud of silver once again, couldn't help but wish for similar companionship.

Maybe there’d be a bed of jellyfish in which he could break up next. Exciting, yeah?

Zuriel was lost. Again. He could have sworn that he had turned left at the coral bed and then right at the big jutting rock. But somehow he couldn't even find the rock, despite the fact that it had been a rather large landmark.

With a sigh he gave up, perhaps he could just find something to eat and if he was lucky something fun to do. He wasn't all that fast but he loved racing, the feel of the water rushing by was always soothing. Sadly it wasn't that much fun to race against yourself.

Ahead he saw a school of silvery fish gathering. He grinned, those silly little creatures were so much fun to play with, and a good distraction. He began swimming towards them, trying not to attract attention.

It must have been difficult to remain incognito when you glowed like the business end of an anglerfish. Not that Prima had any room to talk as he was as speckled as a flea-bitten pony, but at least he wasn’t violet. Though he caught a glimpse of the other just as the fish swarmed together, the cogs in his brain moved as slowly and as creakily as rusted wheels. In fact, he turned to swim away when it finally dawned on him.

Could it possibly be…a tremor of excitement wriggled its way down his tail to the very tips of his dark fin. He spun quickly and kicked at the air.

“Hey!” he cried out, high-pitched voice resonating through the surrounding area before the ocean swallowed it up. In his eagerness to attract the other, the silver fish erupted in and uproar, scattering again and leaving the other mer nude. Metaphorically speaking, that is. The colt grinned from ear to ear, a smile that was as mischievous as it was sweet. It wasn’t often he saw someone like him!

Prima froze. Someone like him. It was actually his first time. His jaw drifted open, smile replaced by a look of awe.

Zuriel froze as the high pitched noise pierce his ears and the fish exploded. There went that distraction. On the other hoove he now had something new to do. Another mer, still not fully grown, that shouldn't be anything to worry about.

He began swimming towards the the other mer, not too fast but certainly not wasting any time. He hadn't been around too many mers and it was a little bit exciting for him to meet someone new, especially one about his own age.

"Hi there!" he yelled back and then he grinned at the spotted mer "I'm Zuriel!" he lowered his voice as he began to draw closer. He saw a strange look on the others face. "Are you ok?" He cocked his head quizzically.

The dumbfounded look on his face did not help him at all.

Prima leaned forward, nose whuffling close to Zuriel's own, as though he refused to believe that they were similar. The colt maneuvered himself around the other Mer, close enough to invade his personal space, but not close enough to touch - he was real, his mind was telling him. Tail, fins, and all!

Drifting behind him, Prima couldn't help himself: he reached forward and champed onto the poor stranger's dorsal, tugging at it like a dog would for good, solid proof.

"Yeh're real!" he spouted, darting backwards. "N' here Ah was thinkin' Ah was some sorta mu'ant Kelpi! Whatta relief!"

Satiated and the epitome of delight, the smaller foal zipped around Zuriel and butted his nose against the violet one's.

"M'Prima! Primaveran!"

There was a silly note of relief in his voice, as though he had finally found the last player in a game of hide-and-seek.

Zuriel watched the strange mer as it began circling him. He didn't feel any danger from the other foal. And then he snorted with shock as...that mer just bit me! He felt himself being tugged backwards but there was no actual pain, just surprise.

"Of course I'm real! And why in all seven oceans would you think that I'm a...a kelpi!" He indignantly shouted the last bit. A kelpi indeed.

But he really just couldn't be angry, it wasn't in his nature. He tapped his own nose against Primaveran's. And then, he turned his back on the other boy and swam off. "You're it!" he shouted over his shoulder, pausing to glance back.

"Well, yeh're not a Kelpi, o'v'ously!" he said matter-of-factly. "Jes' never seen n'other one o' me a'fore!"

He was about to continue on with the entirety of his life story when Zuriel bumped him back. He blinked owlishly and jerked forward, brows knitting.

"Hey! M'notta 'IT'!" he shouted, clearly not understanding the beginnings of the game of 'tag'. "M'a boy n'-- where ya goin'!"

Despite having no idea what the rules and regulations were, nor ever having known even the premise of the game, he darted after the brightly hued Mer like an expert, as though he knew what he was doing.

He didn't, of course, but like shell was he about to let him get away! They had only just met, darnit!

"Of course your a boy!" Zuriel shouted back, "but your still it until you catch me!" Seeing the boy zoom closer he turned and bolted, trying to put as much distance between them as possible. This was the best part of being a mer, the absolute freedom in the water that he loved so well. He began laughing to himself as he zigged and zagged trying to stay one step ahead of Prima.

He turned to glance behind to keep track of where the other boy was and when he turned to look in front of him he was about to run into some kelp that had just decided to grow in his way. He skidded to a stop and turned to go around it but deep down he knew that his momentum was gone, and only pure dumb luck or a very clever plan would let him escape. And he never really got around to that planning stage.

"Well'en, gonna have t'catch ya then!"

The small colt kept up as best as he could, shadowing Zuriel's moves less gracefully. He drew his fore hooves into his narrow chest and pushed himself as far as he could go, face pinched in concentration.

He gave a triumphant laugh as he spied the kelp draw near; he was going to win! Prima tossed his head, drew up preparing to stop...only to crash right into the other mer-colt with a squeal and throwing them both into the messy kelp bed.

"Gruagh!"

Zuriel flailed and trashed as he was pushed into the kelp. This was not what he had planned to happen. He groaned and tried to collect himself.

"Well it looks like you got me after all" He muttered glumly. "But that means that its my turn to get you!" He grinned wickedly at Prima. Then he realised that his foreleg was caught in a strand of kelp. He bent down and began gnawing at the strand, trying to hurry so he could continue to play.

The colt gave a small groan, but shook off the soreness as though it had been a loose coat. He was up and ready for more; he had managed to regain his energy in less than a minute, like only a child could.

"Eat mah seaspray~" he cried as he darted off. When he looked over his shoulder, he halted. Well, then! This wouldn't do! He grumped, and snaked his way back to Zuriel to assist in helping him gnaw his way out.

"Gettin' caught in kelp is a real pain in th'tuckus," he said between bites.

"You've got that right."

With the extra help the kelp loosened easily and with one strong yank the kelp broke off, falling away from his hoof.

"I guess since you came back to help me I'll give you to the count of three...1...2..."  

[Sukkubus]

"Ye gotta wai' 'til Ah'ma lil' ways away!" he whined as he began to count. However, he didn't stick around to see if the other colt restarted, and he shot off like a speckled bullet. Let's see glowy catch him now! He just hoped there were no kelp beds ahead, or jellyfish for that matter. That would put a real damper on their fun!

Not that he would ever see it coming, with his eyes closed and all....

Oh fine... "3...4!" Zuriel darted off, an extra number was good enough! He dashed after his playmate "Here I come!"

Is that colt messed up in the head or something? He's just going straight... "Hey look out Prima!"
