It seems only fair that someone as fantastic as the Doctor should get such an amazing friend-turned-enemy.
I really don't know much about him, except that in the new series he's the Prime Minister for a short stint (I have very limited acess to Doctor Who T-T) so any discussion about him would be excellent and -hopefully- enlightening.

I liked Roger Delgado's Master (the first one). It's probably just me, but he seemed charming. Evil and power-hungry, but charming. Anthony Ainley's Master (the fourth one, I think) didn't seem to have that charm, but he wasn't bad, either. Just my two cents' worth.
The Master (in the show, at least) was played by:
Roger Delgado (with the Third Doctor)
Peter Pratt (in "The Deadly Assassin")
Geoffrey Beavers (in "The Keeper of Traken")
Anthony Ainley (for the rest of the classic series)
Gordon Tipple (in the very beginning of the Eighth Doctor movie)
Eric Roberts (in the rest of the Eighth Doctor movie)
Derek Jacobi and John Simm (in the new series)

Derek Jacobi also did the voice of the Master-android in Scream of the Shalka.

OOOOH John Simm is my favorite Master... he is sooo awesome as the role, can't wait to seem him in the end of time episodes ! He is my number one favorite villian.

John Simm was DEFINITELY an awesome Master.
Then again, I've really only seen the newer seasons.

My issue with th John Simm master is that he's a lunatic bent on destruction. In ClassicWho, the destruction usually had a purpose (like killing the Doctor) or was incidental to his ultimate goals of immortality and domination. I really wanted to see more of the Derek Jacobi master personally. That would have been interesting. And less of an obvious mirror for Ten.

Oh, he was certainly saner in Last of the Time Lords. He used his intelligence and cunning. He was after domination of the universe. But he was also causing pain, suffereing, and wanton destruction purely because he enjoyed it. Punishing your enemies and squashing rebellion is one thingbut he went way beyond that. To the Classic Master, most people just weren't important enough to care if they were suffereing or not, as long as they served his purposes. Also, if he were truly in command of himself, he'd have killed the Doctor when he had the chance, not kept him around for a year. The Classic Master would also have had more interest in Jack than just an unkillable torture toy. He'd have wanted to study him to figure out how to duplicate his immortality for himself.

I love all of the Masters, but I adore Roger Delgado.
Master: Here are my papers
Doctor: Are these forged?
Master: Of course!
But John Simm's Master made me happy as well.
I just... generally love The Master.

Angel of the Doctor John Simm is totally awesome. I wonder why he's gone blonde now... i love him too, and i also wonder why he went from sandy brown to blond even though he hadn't technically regenerated. i think maybe the way they brought him back caused the color change
