Believe it or not, I like playing the violin. Just not at my school orchestra. The teacher at the middle school also teaches the high school, and the same people will be there again this year.

It's so boring and nobody really practices, they just use me as an excuse. Any way how to deal?

You should look at school orchestra as a noncompetitive way to get to know other people that play stringed instruments. The other people in your orchestra may not practice as much as you do, but they possibly have the same amount (if not more) of passion for their instrument.

If you're looking to challenge yourself and are not finding that opportunity in your school orchestra you will have to look elsewhere. I myself have never been challenged in school orchestra. Ask your teacher at school if there is any youth symphony in your area that you could join.

Until last year I was upset that my school orchestra was not better because no one practiced. I learned to accept it and just have fun. My goal for last year was to get everyone motivated, and to make sure the stage attitude was great. As concertmaster it was my job to get a mirrored smile going throughout the entire orchestra. They played better knowing that I was confident. Confidence can be contagious. So, just play your best, don't show off, don't get frustrated, and try to have. Don't make people feel stupid, either...

Just think positively, and be optimistic. If you really are as good as it sounds like you are, then show it. And do a bit of showing off if you have to in order to make your orchestra experience more worth-while. I would, if I were in your shoes. biggrin Violin rocks, and you know it! So just make the best of this bad (orchestra) situation.

Showing off just creates negative feelings. Really you dont' want the orchestra hating you. Modesty is key. NO FLAUNTING!

The reason I don't like school orchestra is because the teachers ALWAYS put me in the bottom orchestra and I KNOW that I am ready for the top! I am so sick of them holding me back and thats why I dont like it!

I've been there, done that. However, you can still learn something while trying not to beat the person next to you 'coz they don't practice. Focus on the musicality & leading your section (if they listen!) so your brains aren't falling out at the next rehearsal. Maybe you can join a youth orchestra or make a chamber group & order new music. Hang in there & have fun 3nodding

Oh my gosh! I'm in the EXACT same position at my new school too!! So I can totally relate. I'm in 11th grade, and we're going to play a song I played back in MN in 7th or 8th grade. It's aggravating.

I wouldn't make a big deal about it. I'm in the exact same situation at my school.

The only suggestion that I would have is to audition or join an orchestra outside of school. It helps to be in a group that's your level.
