I really love the old kingdom trilogy by Garth Nix - especially Lireal and was wondering if anyone else has read them and what you thought?!

The Abhorsen Trilogy is what I think you mean, and you forgot the last book in your poll (Abhorsen).
I love this trilogy, I read it along side Harry Potter and was like a serious balancing out of poppy Harry magic and serious, grounded bell ringing, go back to hell magic. I especially love his take on the other world, its sublime and frightening, especially when she delves deeper into the levels of death. Gives me shivers just thinking about it.
My only qualm was how the magic worked, you needed to be either close to the Wall, over the wall, or by chance wait for a strong wind to come south. But I love the whole symbol system, that was fantastic, I think once I get the Horus Heresy finished, I'm going to reread the trilogy.
My favourite character is definitely Sabriel, the first book was so capturing I literally took a whole day off to just read it. Lireal I wasn't a big fan of, it was a pleasant bridge between the first and third book in which the reader learns quite a bit but overall I wasn't entirely pleased with Lireal's character, I felt that Nix was trying too hard to simulate another Sabriel. The problem I had with that was that Sabriel began as a strong character, just scared and ignorant. I felt Lireal began as a weak character and stayed relatively weak throughout the book. Abhorsent, wow, what a book, started off REALLY rocky and at first I didn't like it but as it went off, I won't give away any spoilers but good lord it wasn't disappointing.

I agree totally with you when she goes into death and the atmosphere within it. I especially loved the paperwing idea-personally i think it would be awesome to fly biggrin
I've gotten into a load of fantasy books but this was definatly one of the best...by far. Have you read any others of his books?

When I got into Nix he wasn't well written yet and so my book stores only had fractions of his works and it was purely by chance that I happened upon Sabriel, a mysterious, black coloured paperback with a strange symbol marking the front and only one of them in stock. I don't even believe that I read the back cover, I simply had to have it and before I knew it I was hounding Coles to order me copies of the rest of his trilogy.
I have distantly heard of his other books, usually I am up to my ears in recommended literature so I don't shop around much, people usually tell me what to buy and so I do. I don't believe I've ever been disappointed in a friend's suggestion. Though a good friend of mine suggested reading about an errant assassin and I can't say I very much enjoyed the book too much wink .

Well if u want a recommedation, i definately suggest the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan as this was just a fantasic read...i got into it straight away and others i've suggested it to also really liked it. Aswell as that there's the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon as this is part of a series of 8 books in total..only 3 have been released so far however.
As for Garth Nix...he's done the Morrow days but aimed (i thought) to younger readers and also a collection of stories called 'Across the Wall' which was oka..but by far his best was the Abhorsen Trilogy.
Any worthy recommendations???

Sabirel is a favorite book of mine. I have not finished reading Lirael yet. I hated to leave the library to meet Sabirel's children, so I stopped at Part Two for now. I need to finish it.
