Manny peered out her bedroom door, finding the rest of the apartment deserted. She knew one of the parishioners was having a baby tonight, but she hadn't been sure her mother was going to the birth. As it turned out, she was, and that made the girl's plans much less dangerous. Since their incident at the zoo Manuela hadn't been able to talk to Harper for more than a few minutes, and she honestly missed her friend. So, in hopes of arranging a meeting she had chosen a night when she thought Mama Estelle would be busy and left him a note with her address and a time. Now all she could do was wait.

The fashion diva looked scruffier than usual, with her curls half relaxed and laying back on her pillowed bed. She was wearing a gold satin robe over her cotton pajamas, and she was a little frustrated. It was getting late and she was tired, but she didn't want to go to sleep until she knew for sure he wasn't coming. The ladder she had placed outside her window was empty for the time being, but the boy had a habit of surprising her so she didn't want to take her eyes off it.

Soloman and Eliot were entirely not afraid of Ashley's wraith. And truth be told, they knew Ashley didn't care about Manny more than punishing her son, so when Harper asked Eliot to drive him over to Manny's houses' vicinity for 'bubblegum' he knew exactly what was happening. They walked to the ladder and both the grown men snickered between themselves.

"Alright Harper, you have your phone.. Me and Solo are gonna be at the bar a little away, so just call when you need us." Eliot said, watching as Harper made his way up the ladder not nearly as careful as he ought to be.

"And no kissing or whatever! OW!"

"Shut up Eliot, he wasn't even thinking about that! He's only like, ten, like, dude, what's wrong with you?!"

"Eww! Go away Eliot!" Harper hissed in a loud whispery tone as he started making it to the girls window.

The two men, arguing and teasing between themselves, began making there way back to their car, leaving the boy in the strange neighborhood all to himself like the excellent guardians they were.

"Manny?"

Manny looked up from her rest, jerking to a sit. "Harper," she said, acknowledging his presence as she moved to pull the window all the way open, "I didn't think you would come. Don't worry, Mama Estelle's gone for the night. Did you get punished as bad as I did?" She wasn't sure which would be worse, considering Harper's mother had simply paid the keepers on the spot. On the other hand her mother was making her earn the money by being a delivery girl for the bodega on the corner. "Come on inside," she suggested, peering down at the bottom of the ladder, "And don't mind the chickens they're just upset that you woke them up."

"Yeah..." Harper muttered, glaring at the chickens. "I just remembered how much I like barbecue.." He eventually tried to clobber inside of her window, taking a second to catch his breath before shrugging a bit. "My mother wouldn't talk to me for a few days, if that was my punishment my mom's real stupid. She tried to say I couldn't go out and talk to people too but after five days she was begging me to... what about you?" He asked, finally taking a second to look around her room.

Manuela snickered at what she could only assume was a joke, and with a sigh fell back onto her bed, curling her painted toes. "Mama Estelle is making me work to pay off the money I owe the zoo," she explained sadly, propping herself up onto her elbows, "I'm running deliveries for the grocery store on the corner, then I think I have to get a paper route. She says I need to learn the value of money."

Harper let out a sigh once he was settled, looking out the window after Eliot and Solo briefly until they were out of sight. "Sorry." He muttered, and it didn't sound like he meant or wanted to say it, more purely out of obligation or guilt. "Was she mad at you, then? Like, really, really mad?"

Manuela made a face, grabbing hold of her feet. She tugged her heels in, bouncing her legs up and down. "I think she was more... Disappointed," she said with a sigh, "Like, she expected better of me." She flipped her curls back, watching as he paced the room. "You want to do anything? I mean, I kind of just wanted to talk but if you're bored I've got movies and games and stuff," She offered, gesturing to a cabinet with a small television on it.

"Disappointed?" Harper laughed, shaking his head, "Whatever Manny, your mom's a bit off if you ask me. You're prolly the safest kid I know! Well, you know, except kids like Antony.. but who counts them." He said, nosily trying to go through her closet/drawers/what not. "I don't care, I guess I came to make sure you weren't mad or selling me out or.. well, you know. If you were okay and stuff. You were pretty upset at the zoo." He gave a half shrug and kept his gaze down, a little guilty. It was terribly uncomfortable for him, given that he could break a national treasure and never break a sweat... he didn't like his friends suffering, though, so he could never be accused of total apathy.

Manny blushed, leaning forward to touch her feet to her chest. "I wasn't mad at you, I was just scared of what Mama Estelle was going to say." She wasn't really sure what she could do to contest the thought that her mother was 'off', but she knew that it wasn't a very nice thing to think about someone. "She's just under a lot of stress," she explained, "With the bills and everything. That fence cost a lot of money."

Harper rolled his eyes, turning back toward her. "Yeah, whatever. She sounds boring to me... I guess you turned out alright, though. You could of called my mother, we have plenty of money for stupid stuff like that. Of course not enough for me to have my own dirt bike but FINE, you know, parents." He crossed his arms and sat on the edge of her bed, clearly not a child thankful for his blessings. "So is that it? Just had to get a job?"

"And I have to help fix up the community garden down the street on Sundays," she added, "They're starting to plant vegetables for spring." She shrugged off the comment about money, knowing well enough that he wouldn't really understand the problem what with his rockstar parents. And in the back of her mind she almost laughed, deciding that the world would truly be in danger if he ever got a dirt bike or anything similarly dangerous. "But it's okay, I like listening to the new people telling their stories," she explained, "It's like traveling almost, to hear them talk about where they're from." And on the other hand it could be quite depressing.

"Oh." Harper blinked. It sounded really quite boring, it was some punishment after all. "Is your mom mad at me? Cause, my mom is sorta.. well, Sunny said she's 'focusing her anger on you' for some reason. They used to like you so much, too! You were my only friend that could come over without her complaining!" He grinned as though it was funny, when in reality it was something quite... well, sad.

"I don't think Mrs. Harris told Mama about you," she admitted, "I think she kind of pinned it all on me." She thought for a moment about what he was saying, realizing that she had seriously blown her chance at being able to be good friends with him. Thinking of something, she asked timidly, "Is there any way I could make her like, not angry? I mean she likes clothes right? Maybe I could make her a dress."

Harper snorted, "I like her better when she's mad at you, myself. Oh, it'll blow over with her if you're worried about it.. it don't matter though, I'm moving out as soon as I can!" He said, with an efficient nod. Yup. Out and into a cardboard box; that wouldn't be happening. Lack of tv= death. "She likes clothes I guess, but some of it's really strange." And if he was saying it was strange, it was strange!

Manuela blinked, not entirely sure why he would like her better while she hated her. Oh well, boys were strange like that. "Well, I can make anything strange if I'm the one sewing it," she commented, drifting toward her closet, "I've got a bunch of stuff in here that I found at thrift stores and chopped up."
