Helaman-5-12 is now RealityEscape. Whenever I need to get away from the world, I read. I often call it my reality escape. The talk of books in this thread motivated me.

I'm thinking about changing my name. Don't get me wrong, I like the scripture. But I very much dislike numbers in my name. Any ideas? I have a few, just wondering if anyone else has some.

The ones that I'm thinking of are
RealityEscape
Lost-In-Thought (Couldn't resist xd )
LoveIsFake
CandleOnAHill

Could try a real name...or something that sounds like it could be a real name.

how about "en ami" which means as a friend
or
"ditat Deus" which means God enriches (also the motto of Arizona)

or is there a favorite character in a book that you liked?

I correct myself. Best writer that I have read, in my opinion.

So - who would you nominate?

I am assuming then Helaman that you have not read anything by any of the following (This is who I would nominate):
For best Fantasy Comedy: Terry Pratchet (Discworld Novels...He also has a very good book having to do with the apocalypse called Good Omens )
For best Sci-Fi Comedy: Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy ...also has a good mystery comedy - Dirk Gently series)
For best Fantasy: George RR Martin (A Song Of Ice And Fire series - this is being made into an HBO TV series for 2008...there are many other Fantasy authors very close to the top)
For best Sci-Fi: William C Dietz (All his series I have read are amazing. Orson Scott Card is up there in Sci-Fi, but I would choose Dietz over Card any day)
For best Military typish novel: Tom Clancy (Probably pretty obvious)
For best Horror: Sadly I have read no good horror...Whenever someone recommends a famous horror author he just turns out to be a lame writer.
For best Goth or vampire type novels: Amelia Atwater-Rhodes (admittedly the only goth type I have read, but a very impressive writer. First book written when she was 13 and for the most part sounded like an adult wrote it...unlike a certain Eragon author...that guy seriously sucks lol)
For best Classic author: Alexandre Dumas

I usually don't like trying to choose one favorite author as so many are my favorite in their own areas, but were I to choose one who I think is the best overall writer... I would probably say George RR Martin.

Just because I have not listed certain famous authors does not mean I have not ready them...I have read a huge number of books.

I also hope no one tries to tell me that JK Rowling should be in the list. At first she had an OK story, but her writing is terrible. In more recent books she has hired a "Professional" to help with her writing issues, but the story has sadly gone to crap...and I have several reasons for thinking it has gone to crap.

Of those, the only one I have read is Tom Clancy, who is indeed a very good writer. The rest I will have to write down and read them when I get the chance

I actually have issues with Tom Clancy's writing. A lot of times it seems cliché in some ways that really bug me. However, all my favorite military stories are by him...the Jack Ryan novels specifically...I am still working on reading them all though.

Oh, Just remembered. If you do read any of those authors I listed you should really be careful about George RR Martin. Although he is my favorite author, he is also extremely graphic. Probably not the worst, but certainly the worst I have read. Some people are offended.

I also forgot...as far as Sci-Fi goes I think Frank Herbert's Dune just might be my favorite book. It is the only book I have read by him so far, but I love it. It has a lot of politics in it, so if you don't like that kind of stuff in a book it might be hard to read.

I see no reason why an author should have to dull what's in his mind to suit the readers. If he envisioned it in such detail, then in such detail I will read it.

Ender's Game is still the best sci-fi in my opinion, mainly because of the psychology aspects in it.

I really do enjoy Card. The Ender series was awesome as was the Ender's Shadow series. Just got the last book of that one. Need to read it soon. I just happen to like Dietz's writing style and stories more.
