Backstory

The seas in the realm of Tharnen are ruled by seamen and pirates. The few ports there are on the scattering of islands are very much under their control as well. A king, supposedly, rules from the mainland, and from time to time his ships can be seen patrolling the waters, but the farther you get from the mainland the fewer ships there are. Sailors know they have no protection from the crown on the open waters, and not much more on the islands.

Many ships roam the seas, but infamous among them is the Nuduin. It is said to have been sailing under the same captain for over 500 years, but that is impossible, is it not? A ship without allegiance to anyone, with no distinguishing markings; no flag or insignia.

Treasure hunters and royal sailors have long sought the Nuduin, yet no one has been able to find her. Perhaps it is that her crew is simply good at hiding in plain sight, or perhaps the ship does not exist at all.

Character Name: Aeglin
Age: 427
Rank: Captain

Appearance: Picture
History: A sea-Elf, Aeglin was raised sailing long before Humans took over the seas. He has been a captain for nearly a millennium, and while all other Elves have abandoned the waters in Tharnen and gone to more Elf-friendly areas, he refuses to leave the land of his birth. He is determined to claim the waters back for his people so that one day there may be other Elves in the area and he will not feel so alone. His crews come and go, but he remains captain of his vessel, keeping the Nuduin well maintained so that she lives up to her reputation.

Character Name: Solaris Wys
Age: 24
Rank/Position: (including which ship): Nuduin First Mate
Apperance: >>>
History: Sol was born an orphan--homeless, penniless, nameless and friendless. His future was guaranteed to be a bleak one, even short. Life on the streets was never safe, but Sol made do the best he could. He worked, kept himself unnoticable, before eventually finding his way as a sailor. He ended up on the Nuduin 8 years ago, after being rescued from drowning when the ship he had been on was attacked and destroyed. He felt he owed the crew and captain his life and stayed on. Sol has since worked his way up from lowly deckhand to First Mate.

The harsh sea wind tossed Aeglin's dark hair about him and into his face. It obscured his vision slightly, but he paid no attention to it. He didn't need to see perfectly in order to know where they were headed. Aeglin had been sailing the same seas for centuries. He knew them well, from wind and sea currents to weather patterns and each island. He knew where and how to find everything he and his crew needed.

It was getting harder, though. Aeglin's ship had become legend among the communities that now lived on the islands. He had to hide his identity and send only his crew to land to collect supplies. He had to pay for those supplies now. He could not longer make landfall to hunt and gather water and wood for repairs.

The captain turned around, wind wiping his hair out of his face and kicking it out behind him. Far behind his own ship he could see the smaller, darker form of another. He was certain no one else on his crew could see the ship, with how far it was. It was for this reason he had not mentioned it as of yet. But if that other ship continued to follow him them, staying just out of sight, as it had for the past few days he would be forced to tell the others. That other ship might even catch up to them at this next island. Aeglin would have skipped this stop, but he didn't have much choice. They were running out of water and food. They needed to restock, and Aeglin just hoped they could do so before the other ship caught up with them.

Frowning to himself, he turned away before any of his crew could catch his backward stare and grow suspicious. He did not want them to get worried for now reason, especially if this turned out to be nothing. Still, he would stay on guard, in case it was something after all.

Aeglin's ship and crew had become something of a legend over the years. It started because their ship had no name, and so could not be tracked easily from port to port. Other legends had sprung up out of rumors. Rumors that Aeglin himself was immortal, that the ship was cursed; a ghost ship. Of course, none were true, but that didn't stop the treasure and bounty hunters from following them relentlessly.

After a large bout of seasickness, Krei was finally able to get on deck to his 'chores'. He had never really worked before, but he knew he couldn't complain to anyone, since that would only give him trouble aboard the Nuduin.

He still wavered on the ship some, but he was slowly getting sea worthy legs. He had already heard stories about this ship, and now stories about the captian from other crew mates. He knew some of them were false, they had to be! No person had eyes all around there head, or had three tails.

When he saw the captain on the deck, he had to stare a moment. Captain Aeglin was breathtaking, standing on his ship. He had that far off stare as if something was there, but then again it wasn't. When his captian turned around, he went quickly back to work. He didn't need to be reprimanded in the first day!

As Aeglin turned back to his crew his hair was pushed back into his face again and he pushed it away in annoyance only to have the wind throw it back again. Those of his crew who were closer to him often asked him why he kept his hair so long. None of them truly understood the significance of the braids and beads that decorated his long locks. Only another of his kind would understand the meaning, but that did not matter to him. Besides, it was rather amusing to watch some of the crew attempt to copy him.

The captain left his place at the aft of the ship and hopped back down onto the main deck. Everywhere his crew were going about their chores with no idea that anything might be wrong. That was good.

As he walked through the men his eyes fell on the newest member. Krei, he though his name was. It was clear the man did not have any experience on a ship before, which meant he had lied his way aboard. Aeglin's first mate knew better than to hire anyone inexperienced. And from what he had heard the new deckhand had spent most of the morning every morning below deck being ill.

Aeglin would give him until the next major port to prove himself before throwing him off the ship.

Krei had worked hard at his chores day in and day out. He was normally one of the first to rise and one of the last to crawl into his hammock. He slowly got better at keeping his footing on the ship, but there were times he'd slip up and land flat on his face.

He tried to do his best not to be down in the crew's barracks for long. It reeked of men who didn't even know what baths were. Krei was almost sure they didn't know how to spell it either.

Out of most of the crew men, Krei was the smallest in basic muscle mass. He was sure, though, that if he continued with the harsh work he did all day every day, he'd start to look like the others. That wasn't the best thought on his mind either. That much added weight wasn't all that appealing.

He tended to watch the captian, any chance that he got. He was a beautiful man, enticing in almost any way. Krei had never been this close to an elf before either. So to see a pirate captian and an elf was quite marvelous.

((Don't take this the wrong way, but it feels like you just wrote about something taking place over a long time, but there are rather pressing matters going on in the present that can't be skipped. ie: possible pursuers, needing more supplies. It's hard to address these matters if you've just fast forwarded us.))

(I was just stating what he's been doing on the boat >< I imagine they've been out at sea for a little >< if it doesn't sound that way I can change it >< I'm not all that used to such long posts for one character, lol. >< I'm sorry for the inconvenience though ><)

(Ah, alright. I was just confused. It doesn't sound as though you are speaking in the past, that's all. You might want to make it a little more clear. Little things like 'Krei had worked hard...' make a world of difference. They turn present into past.)

Aeglin was not blind to the stares sent his way by the new crewman. Being one of the last of his kind in this realm he was not unused to such looks. After all he was a rare breed. And he was confident that they would fade over time.

Taking his eyes off the deckhand as he passed he continued on his way toward the helm. He would have to keep an eye on that new crewman and the ship on the horizon. It would be just his luck that they ended up being connected.

Relieving the helmsman, Aeglin took hold of the wheel himself and adjusted their course a tiny bit so they would reach that island sooner. Maybe only by a matter of hours, but in some cases that was all that was needed.

(Fixed it. Sorry again... I hadn't even realized I forgot to add those little bits in, lol)

Krie thought he was being sneeky with the looks, and that there was no chance that the captain could know. He'd always make sure that his head was down, staring at his latest project whenever the captain glanced his way.

When the captain moved the ship a few knocks to the side, Krei tried to determine the distance, but to no avail. He then tried to determine the direction instead, also something he had no clue of. He was getting a hold of the basics of dealing with a ship, but direction, speed, and basic changes were still far beyond him.

He sighed and went back to scrubbing the decks. A job he was normally stuck with. At least it was better than being down in the hull pealing potatoes!

(It's alright.)

The wind was in their favor at least, Aeglin thought to himself as he stared ahead, straining to see the shape of that island on the horizon. He knew there was no way even he could see it right now, but it would have made him feel better about that ship on their tail if he knew they were almost at their destination.

But there was no sign of it, only ocean as far as the eye could see. With a sigh he handed the wheel back over to the helmsman, likely the only other person on board who understood what his small adjustment meant, and returned to his post astern to keep an eye on their pursuers.

Krei was oblivious to the danger that they could have been in at that time. He just kept at his work, and tried to do it the best he could. He was on hands and knees scrubbing at a stain that would never come out.

While doing thing, mentally in his head, naming off each position from the lowly deck hand, to the captain himself. He knew he needed to at least know this so he knew when to get cocky around who. The last thing he needed to do was mess up the second mate's position with the cook's.

Aeglin swung himself up onto the railing at the back of the ship. He perched there with the perfect balance that only an Elf could have, one hand on the rigging the other on the railing beside him as he sat. Anyone else would risk falling if they were to sit like this in wind as strong as they were in right now.

The door opened from the cabin below and a man stepped onto the deck. A few white strands danced in front of Solaris's eyes as they swept over the crewmen on the deck. The first mate had been down in the hold, making a list of what they needed in way of supplies once more. They were going to arrive at port soon and Solaris didn't enjoy having the crew buying what they didn't need. While he went over the inventory, he considered relieving some of the crew from their duties. He hadn't yet, but seeing the crew working on the deck made him reconsider this idea.

Solaris sighed and closed his eyes before opening them again. He wandered among the crew, checking that they were indeed doing what they should. He would have continued correcting the crew had he not noticed someone swinging onto the railing at the back of the ship. He stared for a moment but then strode acrros the deck, passed the deckhand scrubbing away at a stain, towards his captain.

Solaris frowned as he approached Aeglin. Although experience told him that his captain would be safe sitting on the railing, he couldn't help but disapprove of it. Far too many of the crew mimicked the captain and Sol didn't need any falling overboard because they wanted to be like Aeglin. "Captain?"

Krei watched as the First Mate walked passed him. He made sure that the pirate officer wouldn't slip or trip due to the water and bucket near the stow-away prince. He sighed and glared at the stain. This thing's never coming out! he thought incrediously to himself. He didn't state that though, that could be bad.

As Solaris walked towards the captain and started to speak to him, Krei couldn't help himself but try to over hear. The wind was in his favor at least, even though they weren't talking all that loud. He heard the words, so that was all that mattered.

Aeglin looked over when he heard his first mate's voice, tearing his eyes off the horizon, and smiled up at the man. Aeglin was surprisingly short for someone with his reputation, shorter than many of the men on his ship, and sitting didn't help his stature any.

"Yes?" he asked, knowing he was probably about to get a lecture about being a bad example to the crew. But it wasn't his fault that they all had terrible balance, at least to him. They should know better than to copy him.
