To Claire
Upon hearing your troubles in the real world I have sent one of my own to watch over you, but you must take care of it in return. Enclosed in that box is a orb shaped crystal that will show you your dreams and solidify them into a guardian. I will be paying you a visit when I can, to make sure you are properly suited.

The Goblin King

Claire glanced around the apartment as she put her bags down. None of the lights had burned out as she feared they would and so the room was flooded with light. She set her keys in the container on the table by the door and flicked on the hall and kitchen lights effectively making the room as bright as the noonday sun. She pulled a bowl out of her cabinet to heat up her leftover Chinese food so she could eat it before the sun set outside leaving the world in darkness. But because she had taken too long getting home that evening the food was not ready in time. The sun had already set taking with it the light that had flooded in from the outside world. She scolded herself for her carelessness at not closing the blinds while it was still bright. Instead she sat crouched behind her counter peering across the living room out her dark window. She was too afraid to get up and close the window because in her mind she imagined a man was standing in the dark outside the window staring at her. She considered just going to bed and leaving the window open but she knew that if she did not get up and close it she would not be able to sleep that night because her thoughts would be locked on the black hole that was sucking the light out of her living room into the dark night outside. She looked at the latch on the window to make sure it was locked and told herself that the invisible man would not be able to get in. Behind her the microwave finished heating the Chinese food and the shrill beep it let out made her jump. In what she saw as a very smart move she twirled on the tile floor and hid herself behind the cabinet pretending she had meant to jump. She peeked her eye around a corner of the pantry to make sure there had been no movement in the darkness and then pressed her forehead against the pantry door in an attempt to gather the courage to approach the window and close the blinds. She took in deep breaths to steady herself and thought that she was succeeding but every time that she tried to force herself to move from her spot in the brightly lit kitchen she stayed still. “Come one Claire, you can do this.” she told herself firmly but it did not work. “You see, this is why you need a dog. If you had a dog you wouldn’t have to worry about the darkness on the other side of the window, you could send the dog to check to see if there was a man watching you. Even better yet, you could teach the dog how to pull the string to close the blinds. Oh, this conversation isn’t getting us anywhere. I wish I wasn’t so afraid of the dark.” She said to herself. It took another ten minutes of monologue before she forced herself to run past the hallway to hide behind the chair, than ninja roll to behind the couch, then crawl behind another chair before launching herself at the window and shutting the blinds. Finally the light that seemed to have been sucked out of the room returned and she wiped her forehead surprised to find it was soaked in sweat. Disgusted she decided a shower was in order and she opened the bathroom door and flicked n the light. She left all of the lights on in the apartment and locked the bathroom door behind her. An hour later she emerged fully soaked and rather relaxed. She turned off all of the lights except the hall light and then smiled at the friendly night light that lit her bedroom. She glanced at her closet to make sure the dresser she had shoved in front of the door for the night was still there and then jumped onto her bed and snuggled under her blankets. She congratulated herself on having been able to jump from far enough away that the monster under the bed had not been able to grab her. Then she frowned at the night light and let out a deeply held sigh. She pulled off her towel and used it to cover her pillow, then pushed her wet hair out of her face and continued to stare at the night light. “I wish I wasn’t so afraid.” She told it. “There’s no such thing as the monster under the bed r in the closet and I shouldn’t be afraid of the dark. I wish I had more courage.” She confided to the little sun that was plugged into her wall adding its light to the light that came in from the hallway.
Just then Claire felt something roll past her feet on the covers of the bed. Her whole body tensed and she hardly dare to breath. The thing rolled up her side closer to her face and she ducked her head under her blankets. When the thing rolled off of her comforter and onto the sheet in front of her face it tinkled. On impulse Claire shut her eyes and slapped the thing with the back of her hand. It rolled off of the bed onto the rug she had sitting on the floor with a dull thump making her jump up and pull her knees to her chest. She rubbed the back of her hand which she could see in the dim light was starting to turn red. To her it had felt like she had hit hard glass. She leaned over the bed just in time to see something round roll under her bed. Grabbing her flashlight and robe she jumped off of the bed and placed herself as far away as she could before crouching down to shine the beam of light under the bed. The light ran over the boxes and containers she used to take up space under the bed until the light gleamed on something she had not placed there. It was round and shiny and there was a crescent of light in it that she could not quite place. It looked as though it was a design from inside but it might have been from the light shining on the glass exterior and the thing seemed to be tinkling.
“What on Earth is that?” she asked the flashlight. The thing moved and she quickly sat up clutching the flashlight to her chest. Her heart beat faster at the sound of glass rolling over her wood floors and then she let out a shriek when it bounced onto her lap. The glass was cold against her skin when she set the flashlight down and lifted the orb making her shiver. The orb continued to tinkle and after awhile the tinkling seemed to form words but she could not understand what it was trying to say. Now that she could clearly see the orb had no teeth she climbed back on her bed and pulled the blankets up to keep herself warm. She turned the orb over a few times wondering what the tinkling meant. She untied a string that was wrapped around the orb and pulled off a letter that was attached to the string. She carefully unfolded the paper and read the note. When she was done she rubbed her eyes and read the note again.
“You’re an answer to my wish?” she asked the ob when she finally set the note aside. The orb tinkled and she assumed it was saying yes. She looked at it skeptically doubting that it could make her less afraid of the dark. The orb rolled back into her lap oblivious to her reluctance and Claire stared at it until she felt a yawn force its way out and then stared some more. “What am I supposed to call you?” she asked the orb after suppressing a third yawn. The orb tinkled but she still could not understand it. She stifled another yawn and glanced at the clock. It was well past midnight and she was getting sleepy but even with the letter to reassure her she was still nervous about sleeping with the orb there. Claire scooted into her blanket and rested her head against the pillow hoping that if she was in a more comfortable position she would be able to stay awake. The orb rolled under her arm almost snuggling against her and she wondered if it could feel her heart beat and if it could even feel anything at all. She tried to watch the orb but as the seconds ticked by she felt her eye lids grow heavy. A few times she woke with a start and glanced down at the orb to see if it was still there and then the process would start all over again until finally she fell into a deep sleep.

Claire opened her purse to pull out her keys before leaving the apartment for another day at work and stared at the orb that was nestled inside. “You can’t come to work with me.” She told the orb firmly. “Something could happen to you!” she added when the orb show no signs of wanting to leave the purse. “Great, I’m talking to inanimate objects now.” She told herself, but the truth was she wasn’t talking to an inanimate object because the orb was very much alive. The orb tinkled at Claire as if to tell her that they could stand there all day and the orb would not leave the purse. She looked down at her watch and let out a sigh. If she stood there arguing with the orb any longer she would be late to work and that was something she never wanted to happen. “Fine, but you better not leave the purse.” She warned the black orb. It tinkled back at her and she hoped that it was in agreement so pulling out her keys she closed the purse over the orb and locked the door to her apartment.
Later that day Claire let out a sigh and rubbed her eyes. Finally it was time for lunch and she was starving. She waved good bye to her friends and scooped up her purse heading for the door. Today she felt like eating at one of the cafes in the middle of the city. It was quiet there and she could get lost in her thoughts until the time that the alarm on her watch would go off warning her that she had ten minutes to get back to work. It took her a few minutes to walk to the café but it was worth it when she walked in to find it empty except for a man that was sitting at a table against the wall. She quickly ordered a bowl of soup from the waitress and sat down at a table against the opposite wall. She took the orb out of her purse and set it on the table. “Here, you can have a little bit of fresh air before we go back to the office.” she told it. She wondered if the orb breathed or even ate. Either way it had behaved at the office, except for the occasion tinkling which she told everyone was just her cell phone. Out of the corner of her eye she watched the other patron. She was naturally weary of men and wondered when it was that her fear had begun but she decided not to think about it. She knew the man from previous encounters with him and if she had seen him before she had walked in she never would have stayed. She criticized herself for not leaving while she had the chance and was trying to get up the nerve to cancel her order and go somewhere else for he seemed too uncouth and bored for her own comfort. She was sure that he was in a foul mood again. It was men like him that made her weary. She told herself just to ignore him and smiled at the orb. “We’ll have to go out sometime so I can show you more of the city. It’s an amazing place in the daytime! I think you’d like it!” she told the orb, but even as she said it she doubted her words. The orb always seemed to stick to the shadows and she was sure that it would prefer the night much more. She felt movement behind her and looked to find that the man had left his seat and walked up to her.
“Do you always make a habit of talking to yourself?” the man asked. Claire looked down at the hand he had placed on the back of her chair and looked back at the tabletop unable to answer. “Look at me when I’m talking to you.” He ordered her. He grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him. A moment later there was a dull thump and the man shrieked in pain. He pulled away and looked down at his throbbing foot; Claire looked down too wondering what it was that had saved her. Much to her joy she saw that her orb had rolled off of the table and right onto the man’s foot. She wished momentary that the orb had been heavier and had smashed his foot. She decided to ask the orb later if it had known that she was afraid. The man reached down and scooped the orb off of the floor, “Stupid thing!” he shouted as he pulled his arm back and readied to throw it out the door.
“No!” Claire shouted. She grabbed the man’s free arm and twisted it behind his back pressing him against the wall while she plucked the orb from his hand. Then she realized what she had done and backed up horrified that she had twisted someone’s arm enough to hurt them. “I-I’m sorry,” she stumbled to apologize. Once he was released the man turned around and raised his arm to strike her with the hand that hadn’t been pinned behind him.
The cook from the café grabbed his arm to stop him and pointed to the door. “Get out, you’ve over stayed your welcome.” He said gruffly. The man pulled his arm away. He pulled his jacket straight and with a glare at Claire stormed out of the café.
“Thank you, Philippe.” Claire said when the man was gone. She smiled weakly up at him and cradled the orb to her chest.
“Why are you so scary?” The cook asked her crossing his arms. “You took karate with my niece so I know you don’t need to be afraid.” He looked at her for a moment but when no answer was forthcoming he motioned to the bowl of soup he had brought her. “Eat up while it’s still warm.” With one last shake of his head he returned to the kitchen pulling with him the other waitresses and cooks that had come to watch. Claire’s orb tinkled at her when she set it back on the table and she smiled weakly at it.
“Thank you for smashing his foot.” She told it. She rubbed the top of the orb and then pulled her soup towards her. She was glad the man hadn’t thrown the orb. Even though a few times the orb had annoyed her because it always seemed to get into trouble, she would have been devastated if it had shattered. With the distractions gone she quickly ate her soup and slipped the orb back in to her purse. The rest of her day continued with no more problems and she returned home after work well before dark. “Goodnight, my dear orb.” She said before closing her eyes and falling asleep in a bedroom that was still lit by the fading light of the sun. The orb and snuggled down beneath the blankets where it was nice and dark and Claire assumed that it was sleeping as well.

Dear Diary,

Today I lost the orb I got from Jareth. I know what you’re thinking, how does a girl lose an orb? I mean it just sits there, doing nothing, all day. Well not this orb. It never stays in one place and I lose it a lot. Usually it’s just hiding somewhere in the apartment but today I lost it at the bowling alley. It had insisted on coming with me to hang out with my friends even though I was against it from the start and then as soon as we got to the bowling alley do you know what that orb did? It waited until I wasn’t looking and then rolled right out of my purse. By the time I noticed it had disappeared I couldn’t spot it anywhere. I got dirt stains on my pants from kneeling down to look under the benches and banged my head a couple of times. When I finally found it again it was with my cousin. She had seen it on the shelf and mistaken it for a bowling bowl. If my cousin hadn’t come over to see what I was doing who knows what would have happened. It probably would have ended up getting rolled down the lane and hitting the bowling pins. I can’t even begin to imagine how much that would have hurt. Not that a person would have been able to roll it down the lane since there are no finger holds. And the orb didn’t even seem to care that I was worried. Not even so much as tinkling that it was sorry. It never apologizes for the things it does and it doesn’t take orders very well either. I had to zip up the purse to keep it inside but it didn’t seem to mind, I think it liked the dark. Eventually the day ended with only a few more incidences. But I don’t feel like complaining any more so I won’t tell them to you. I feel better just getting to say this much. Well, the sun’s going down now and I think I’ll join it. Talk to you later!

Dear Diary,

It’s me again! Lately I’ve found myself trying to think of whether or not I should name this orb of mine. It seems weird to name when I don’t know if it is male or female. That’s the problem with objects, you can never really tell. Unless of course they have female attributes or male attributes like a robot for example. Robots aren’t male or female but its creator can make it look more one way than another if they want to. But an orb is just round so it’s not like it can be shaped more masculine or feminine. Right now it’s just sitting n a pillow in the shadows. I assume it is sleeping if orbs really do sleep. At either rate it refuses to answer me when I ask it what it should be named. Maybe it doesn’t want a name? Well I find that hard to believe. Who doesn’t want a name? Sure it labels you and tells you who you are but that isn’t very bad is it? Maybe it’s a boy, it does like to stay in the dark and it seems to like dark things, but there are girls that like dark things too so I guess that doesn’t work. It doesn’t seem to like girly things or at least nothing that I would term girly. Maybe I’ll just call it It. Nope, it won’t respond to that. It’s awfully prideful for an orb. Trying to think of a name is making my head hurt, I’ll just have to think of something later. It’ll have to be something that means new moon because for some reason the orb reminds me of a new moon. Maybe because it’s because it’s black. Oh well, I’m going to go to bed now. May the sun always shine!

Dear Diary,

Hello Diary! I wonder how many entries it would take to fill the pages of this book. A lot of pages I suppose. I was on vacation this week and I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get things done around the house but it wasn’t. I did a quick cleaning of the house but it was mostly straight any way so it didn’t take very long. My friend the orb was no help whatsoever. It was constantly going around and knocking things off of the shelf. Not things that could be broken but enough to irritate me. It was cute at first but after a little while it became annoying. Then it started to seem like it was playing a game. The orb only knocked down items that were close enough for me to catch. I got faster each time and so it started testing to see how far apart the items could be. Once I got past the annoyance that it was making more work for me it got much more fun. The orb kept playing games all week like it was trying to soak up all of the time it could with me before I went back to work. Usually I’m so tired after work that I go straight to sleep, I hadn’t even thought of how that must make the orb feel. It’s alone all day and then as soon as I get home I go to sleep. But it lets me sleep. Its tinkling is loud enough to wake me up and it knows it but it is quite while I am resting. This week made up for it though, I think. Let me think, what other games did the orb come up with? It tried hide and go seek but that didn’t work out very well because I can’t hide in dark places so it knows where to find me and it always hides in dark places so I am too scared to go after it. I tried to get it to agree to only hide in bright places but as usual it did not listen. So after that we tried playing a game in the pool. We tried Marco Polo but the orb could only go along the bottom of the pool so as long as I swam above it, it couldn’t get me. And I couldn’t tell if its eyes were open or not because it doesn’t have any eyes. Being under water for long periods of time didn’t seem to affect it though. When it first rolled into the water it was there for awhile before I noticed it and it was fine when it came out so made the water didn’t get in. It gave me quite the fright though. Later we tried board games but it couldn’t move the pieces around and I couldn’t figure out where it wanted me to put them. Twister didn’t work out either. Needless to say a pillow fight didn’t work either but that would have been fun. I wanted to go on a picnic I the park but I don’t think it wanted to sit out in the sun because when I suggested it the orb went and hid in a dark corner. That ruined that idea. We hung out a lot of times though. I wonder if it will be alright once I go back to work again. We’ll find out soon enough I guess. Well, the orb is calling me with that tinkle it uses when it needs something. Talk to you later! May the sun always shine!
