A song rang out in the night, howled out by a lone dog. Away from the Mpinzani packlands, Cushti Bok looked for her son. Veshengo, her only offspring, had gone into the world to find himself. He had yet to return. Like any mother, she worried about this. The piebald female sighed, finding a place to sit. Would she ever see her son again?

Shetani sat up, eyes wide. Where had that howl come from? The lioness looked about, gold-brown eyes filled with fear. It was then that she realised - She was alone. Completely alone. Toshiro hadn't been cruel to her, rather... He'd been pleasant, wooful... And he'd left while she was asleep. The young lioness' ears went back as she rose up, creeping towards the sound.

The little wild dog looked up, large ears twitching. Somebody was approaching. "Veshengo?" She stood up, green eyes looking around brightly. But no, it wasn't. It was a lioness. She showed now fear, Cushti Bok. Instead, she meerly watched. "Are you going to kill me, little lion?"

The lioness stopped, lifting her head. "Kill you? Why would I kill you...?" She tilted her head, stepping out of the brush. "You've done nothing wrong..." She wasn't just some hyena, after all. But... What WAS it? She inched closer, sniffing curiously.

The wild dog chuckled, tail flicking a bit. "Well, that's good. I wouldn't taste good, anyway." She went over, sniffing the lion back. "You've never met a wild dog before, have you?" Another chuckle escaped before she sat down. "Go ahead, smell me all you like."

"A wild dog?" Shetani sat back, head tilting. She never HAD met a wild dog before. Her tail flicked as she pondered over this, then she looked around. "Did you hear a spooky sound out here...? It woke me up, and..."

"Yes, I'm a wild dog." Cushti struck a pose, stretching her tail out a bit. "We're canines, and of no relation to the hyenas, though we look it." She smiled, green eyes shining abit. "And that 'spooky sound' was just me howling. You see, the pack I originate from... We sing, we howl. I was merely looking for my son, Veshengo. And you're not him, I'm afraid. You're the wrong gender... And the wrong species."

The lioness circled the wild dog, taking in every inch of her. Interesting... She tilted her head just a bit again, watching the other animal. "Sing...?" She'd never heard of an animal SINGING before... Her rump made contact with the ground again. "I've never really heard somebody sing before..."

The little wild dog's acid-green eyes filled with amusement and delight before she threw her head back, letting out a peel of howling song. It sang of happy times, sad times, joyous days, and mournful moments, all in the same notes. Each nuance to the notes, each shift in sound, conveyed a message of the balance of order and discord, of joy and sorrow, of life and death. When she finished, she looked at the lioness, tail wagging. "Now you've heard somebody singing."

Shetani smiled, enjoying the song. "That as so lovely!" A yawn escaped, and she realised it was still quite late. She flicked her ears, blinking blearily. "I'm sorry.. I'm tired, and it's late..." Another yawn escaped before she got up, smiling at the wild dog. "It was nice to meet you! Maybe we'll run into one another again." Tail curling just a bit, the lioness turned and started away. When she looked back to bid the dog good night, she found it gone already. The rustle of the grass and leaves near by told her that the dog had gone on her way. She'd forgotten to ask her name...
