"Maim? ... MAIM!?" The green eye'd puppy's voice squeeked horribly, and tears matted fur to his face, and maybe the chill down his spine was from wind hitting wet flesh, but given the scenario, Rend chalked it up to fear. If this was Maim's idea of a joke, it was a cruel one. It was very apparent from any outsiders' standpoint that Rend was only brave so long as Maim was around to be his rock. And now Maim wasn't here.
Rend had been aware of his brother's absence the second he had awoken, and had been freaking out about it for about that long. Hindsight is 20/20 though, as the puppy stopped to think that maybe running aimlessly through the forest was not the best idea in the first place. Maim would most likely have been around the area that they had been in when they layed down to sleep... but now Rend was hopelessly far from there, and without his courage - his brother - there was no way he could gather thoughts enough to find his way back.Maim was wet too, but it wasn't from tears of any sort. The puppy had snuck away just before dawn to find water. It had been high time for him to get a bath and some quiet time away from Rend. Yeah, he loved his brother... but sometimes a wolf just needed to be alone.
By the time Rend was up and screaming, Maim had slipped into a peaceful stupor. "Mmm... this is the life."
Yellow eyes glistened with the rising dawn, almost appearing gold flecked. He sat upon a large rock, his fur glistening with water just as the grass around him glistened with dew from the night before. It was moments like these that Maim wished he could stay like this forever. Everything was golden, from his eyes, to the sun catching in the water both on his fur and on the grass, and even the grass itself held a golden hue from the low-set sun. Sadly, though, the puppy realized that nothing gold could stay.

Calixte romped through the grasses, on a mission. It was early in the morning, and she had snuck away from the borders of her pack's land. It wasn't easy for the little one to believe she had a family now, and wolves to care and love her, but she tried. It was a good feeling to be around others, especially Dax and Bindi. They were awfully nice, even if the black and white spiraled furred wolf was gruff. . .
"I'm siiiinging a song all by myself! And the suuun is starting to riiiise! Isn't it beautiful? Isn't it grand? I'm siiiiiinging a song by myself! Her little voice broke through the peace of the woods, thought it wasn't necessarily so obnoxious. She had a good voice for a pup, and though the words didn't follow much of a story aside from what she was doing, it was the thought that mattered.
She had met Miss Bindi singing so who knew who she might meet by doing the same?
Tail wagging behind her, the little pup went from song to hum as she dodged through the underbrush of the woods. It didn't occur to her that maybe she might draw attention to herself. An agressive wolf or hungry beat might take it as a sign for 'free meal'. . . . But poor Calixte was naive to such things.
Her body was small and would forever be petite thanks to such starvation she had seen, and though she now could eat her fill everyday thanks to her packs generosity, something said the little one would always be. . . little. It would take time before her ribs stopped showing and she regained some baby fat, but regardless of appearance, the little striped and spotted one never lost her smile.
Something drew her attention though. . . a call, a cry. Falling quiet, she stilled as the cry for Maim broke through the air. Maim? What was a Maim? And why had the source lost it? Her walk turned in to a trot as she pushed her way through the woods, a new smell enveloping her senses. It was foreign and strange and not at all like the smell of those in Pandemonium but it didn't deter the girl at all.
She was on a mission.
Pushing herself through the bushes, the little girl finally found the source. It was a dark black and brown puppy, who was crying and wet from tears. He didn't look happy at all, and Calixte couldn't help herself. Not one to be intimidated by strangers, she gave a long whine and took a few steps closer. She was smart enough to know some animals were jumpy. . . like frogs! They'd hop away if she moved too quick, so she wanted to be sure this one didn't run away when he saw her.
Dropping to her belly, in an almost submissive gesture, ears back, she whimpered sympathetically, concern lacing her eyes. "Are you all right? What's wrong?? What happened?" Her little whip like tail wagged behind her in good gesture as she kept her head on her paws, gently watching the other one with a compassionate air.
Was he hungry? Was he still looking for Maim? Was he hurt? Calixte didn't know. . . . but she could only wish he'd stop crying and smile. Tears made her sad. . . even if they were from but a stranger.

"Maaaiiim..." the puppy groaned, finally admitting defeat. He allowed his legs to give out from under him, sending him with a *plop* into the thick grass. Fluffy grass-seeds rose up, being annoyed by the weight of the falling puppy, and floated away on the breeze. Rend continued to sniffle and cough, bigs tears rolling down his face, as he slowly worked his fear and sadness into anger. He could turn this around, make himself believe that Maim hated him, had left him to get lost and die... Maim had run away from Rend, Maim hated--...
Rend's ears went up as the puppy went stock-still, save for wriggling himself deeper into the grass. Something was coming, and he really hoped it wasn't another dumb meat-head that wanted to eat him. It had been tricky enough navigating away from the big male, but that strange lynx had helped a bit with its big mouth.
But back to the "something".
Rend smelled the other puppy before he saw her, and for a half second hoped it was Maim come to save him, but when the pale colored female broke through into sight, those hopes were dismissed. Rend didn't know whether to be happy he wasn't alone anymore or more angry that it wasn't Maim standing in front of him. "I lost my brother..." he admitted, with a hiccup. He had since scrunched up into the smallest form possible, and was more than ready to start backing away if the other pup came closer. It really was true... without Maim, there wasn't much courage left in Rend to fend for himself, no matter what he was up against. At this point, he would have even cried out for mother if he thought she might hear him... and, you know... not eat him for running away in the first place.

Calixte tilted her head some, watching the lil' black and brown pup with a curious gaze. He had been crying, and the tears had stained his cheeks wet - he was small and thin and didn't seem particularly happy to see her. But if she had lost her brother, than perhaps she'd be just as upset too. Her little tail wagged behind her and she ducked her head, offering him a little whine and whimper. Scuttling forward, she couldn't resist trying to better his spirits, and she went to offer him a nuzzle and a few little reassuring licks.
"I'm sorry!" She quickly said, her words sincere with a grief over the others loss. It must not be fun to be all alone, she imagined- though she had been that way until she bumped in to miss Bindi, remembering such a life did cause her some pain. It wasn't fun to be all alone, and should Pandemonium ever leave her, she thought perhaps that life would be very miserable indeed.
Still, Calixte wasn't the sort to mope. She was a spirited pup, and radiated optimism. Her little tail wagged and golden eyes peeked up at the pup. "But I tell you what! Why don't we go look for him? We can go together and maybe if we howl every now and then, he'll hear us? I'm sure we'll find him in no time!"
And that was something the lil' one was quite sure of. She didn't believe in anything besides a happily-ever-after sort of ending, and knew that good would indeed over come such evils. She offered the lil' pup one more lick for encouragement while she waited for him to respond. If he didn't like that idea. . .well. . then. . .they'd just have to think of something else!

Rend cringed and prepared to run as the newcomer came towards him, but ended up accepting her attention with a sniffle, and another bought of hiccups.
"It.. *hic* it isn't your f-fault." he forced out, trying not to cry again. He didn't want to look like a wuss.. he was big and fierce, ... he was. Really. No... not really, not without Maim. This thought almost started him crying again, and only made him shake more.
"Maybe.. I don't know." it was true. He felt lost and defeated, and just wanted to give up for no particular reason at all. He was slowly convincing himself of those harsh things - that Maim HAD run away to leave him on purpose... "Maybe" he said again, getting to his feet and looking around. If Maim would leave him... he would show him! He would find Maim and raise hell. It was simply what Rend did.
"But I don't know which direction I came from..." he said, a sheepish look on his face.

Calixte was unabashed and unconcerned by being so perfectly amicable to the lil' teary-eyed pup. Though she hadn't often cried - only during thunderstorms when she was alone (they were terrifying) - that didn't mean she was unsensitized to pups her age who did. The poor boy seemed completely beside himself and she couldn't dare leave one in such need without a spot of comfort. Offering his wet cheeks one last nuzzle, she looked around, contemplating the best direction to take.
Giggling softly, she pawed at the wolf before giving him a big sniff. "You don't have to remember - I can trace our way back! C'mon!" Eyes bright and full of hope, the lil pup sniffed the ground some before picking up his definite trail. It would be easy to back track at least a little bit - who knew? Perhaps the other brother would show up sooner than later?
A few steps here, a few steps there, and the female suddenly threw her head back and howled. It was a pretty lil' sound but full of question and concern. She sang a song of search, and though she wasn't sure whether her voice would carry as far or as long as she'd heard Bindi and other adults of the pack sing - it was a start! Howling could indeed come in handy.
Finishing her song, Calixte continued, glancing over her shoulder to make sure the brown and black pup was with. Giggling, her tail wagged and she tossed him a bright smile. "Someone's bound to answer! With luck it'll be him." It didn't occur to the girl that her song could also attract undue attention as well - but there was no reason for her to be afraid. Not yet. She had trouble seeing the darker sides of life, unlike her current companion and his lost brother. Though there had been abandonment and loneliness, she couldn't bear to assume that the world or strangers were out to get her.

Ew, cooties ;.; The male backed up, trying to avoid the excess of kisses... but at the same time...
She was just so happy! Rend had never met another female who wasn't his killer mom. He didn't even know if he had had sisters.. before mom... ki-.. no. No thinking about that, it was too frightening to the pup. Maim never seemed bothered about it, but that was Maim.
"You can?" he wondered aloud, only half believing. This pup seemed to know a slew of tricks that Maim had figured out as well. Why he himself didn't know them, Rend could only guess at, and none of the guesses were conclusive. Following the pale pup's lead, he even made an effort to sniff around, wondering what she was picking up.
He stood, once again, stock still when she tipped back her head. He had never heard this before. Maim had howled before, but this was so much different! Music to the pup's ears.
Rend did his best to keep up, and smiled when the other pup looked back at him. "I hope so!" he sounded a lot happier now, possibly her good mood rubbing off on him.

Calixte really didn't know how to sing. Not - not extraordinarily well. Not yet at least. The little pup did very much enjoy singing, especially with a chorus of voices, and was more than a little pleased at Rend's reaction. The little pup seemed to be relaxing, and she was pleased that she caught sight of a smile upon his features. No one should be forced to frown or cry - no, no, no!
The little blond pup ambled back the way Rend had came, doing her best to be careful not to lose the trail. It varied from place to place, and occasionally she herself got sidetracked by a more foreign scent, but slowly the two pups made it back to the way they came. "It'll all be well, truly!" She giggled softly, her blond tassel wagging excitedly behind her.
Pausing in her steps, the lil ones strained her ears to hear for any sound that might mean someone was near. So far. . . .nothing. Not even a response to her howl! Hmph. Canting her head, eyes sparkling, she nodded at her new friend. "Why don't you give it a try? Your brother'll know your voice better than mine!" She giggled a second time, amused at the idea that as stranger would know her. How could that possibly be? Strangers were friends one hadn't met so such a thought was impossible!

He followed the other pup almost blindly, even when she seemed to get side-tracked. He had trusted Maim this much once...
Rend really needed to set his mind straight. The way the dark pup was thinking now, by the time he found Maim again they would be mortal enemies in Rend's pretty green eyes. They were brothers, there was no reason for this line of thinking... and Maim had never before today given Rend a reason to think that he was any less than brother, best friend.. protector. Rend's rock.
So lost inside his own thoughts, the pup jumped when the female stopped and spoke. "Me?.. well..." he hesitated. He had never exercised his own voice before, besides speaking of course. Now he was nervous and somewhat afraid of judgement. Her voice had been so pretty...
Swallowing hard, the pup lifted his muzzle to the air. That was how Maim and this puppy had started.. wasn't it? "Aa...ooo?" he attempted, questioningly and not nearly loud enough. After a mental scolding towards himself, he tried again.. louder this time.
Meanwhile, Maim had been in and out of the water several times. It had been true.. the sun had risen higher and the captivating gold coloring had washed out of everything, but by his memory.. it would all return in the morning. He would have to make it a habit to recognize this time of the day, because it was absolutely stunning to the small pup. He hoped with all his little heart that he would appreciate it his entire life...
Green eyes darted from their fixture on the water as the dark pup picked up the first howl. His ears swiveled around, trying to discern which direction it had come from, when moments later a less appealing howl pierced the air. It wasn't enjoyable at all, as the first one was, and he knew instantly who it was howling the second time. "Rend." he stated to himself, mentally rolling his eyes. He didn't really know how long he had been here, but the howls had definitely not come from the thicket he had left his brother in earlier that morning.
He was instantly torn between leaving the perfect little spot of water and finding the other wolves or howling and letting them come to him. It would be safer if they came to him, in his mind... but he didn't know if he wanted to share this secret with Rend. He wasn't even sure if they would stay there, and so he called. Sitting up, he too lifted his muzzle to the skies and sang his song, true and clear. There would be no mistaking his location now.

Calixte watched as the little pup seemed to hesitate. Her yellow gaze brightened with good humor and reassurance, and her brown striped tail wagged happily behind her. "You can do it - a lil' louder!" She assured sweetly, giggling softly as she sat. This might take awhile, and she didn't want to make him nervous by pacing or distracting herself with lone grasses and twigs.
Still, her ears pricked in delight as he tried howling a second time, and was pleased that it was much, much better. "That's the spirit!" Hopping to her feet, she bounded forward and offered him another happy lick on his chin, brushing past him with all the affection of a sibling. And why shouldn't she?
Calixte loved everyone.
Even those she'd only just met.
Pouncing on a lone twig, the little one gave a playful growl as she attacked it, tail wagging happily behind her. Yes, she'd almost forgotten the reason of their song, but the stick became obsolete as soon as a new voice entered the picture. THIS was what they were waiting for~! The howl was in no way shape or form that of an adult. Though she didn't recognize it, she glanced excitedly to Rend, hoping to see a sense of recognition. "Ooooh! Could that be your brother? Whoever it is sounds awfully young - let's go check it out!" She had the other howl pinpointed now!
Thoroughly delighted, Calixte threw her head back and sang a quick song of patience, allowing the other to know that he had been tagged and they were on their way. She loved to sing, and as one could tell she was far from shy when it came to performing. Taking off like a light, but glancing behind her to be sure Rend was following, the lil' pup zigzagged through the under brush. "It won't be long now~!" She laughed.

To Rend, it seemed like they had been waiting forever when a call finally came back. "What's your name, anyway?" he managed, without sounding too incredibly mean. He wasn't used to being sweet, or even close to it, but he knew when he should knock off the tough-guy routine... and being away from Maim made him skittish, making it impossible not to be submissive in many ways.
He watched as the pale puppy play with a stick. He had never done that before... not ever. They weren't ever allowed to play when they were with mother, and since they had run away they hadn't had the time or safety to just... be puppies.
Of course the call came to him at the same time that the female heard it, but she was the one to speak. He nodded in agreement that it was, in fact, Maim calling back. Rend listened intently as she sang again, in response, and felt a tiny flutter in his gut - though he wasn't able to focus on it for long, as the female took off like a shot! Skittering to his feet, he did his best to keep up with her again, not so much as to get to Maim faster, but to keep the pretty female with the golden voice in his sights.
The returned song caught his ears, making him smile. There was something in that song...
He poised himself on the rock he sat upon, and waited. From the sound of things, it wouldn't be long now until his brother and the other puppy broke through the bushes. Even though Maim was a puppy, he still liked to look good. He could be very impressive if he wanted to be. Jumping down from the rock, he fluffed himself up, shook the remaining water from his body, and took a short run around the rock before hopping back up and situating himself once again. There, he felt like he looked as great as the morning had looked to him. He was ready for the pups' arrival.

The golden touched pup was ever pleased that the morning was beginning to change. Her newest best friend in the whole wide world had stopped his fussing and they were actually accomplishing things! As she had bolted towards the source, it only occurred to her that he had questioned her name and it would be awfully rude if she didn't respond. She slowed her run just long enough so she was shoulder to shoulder with the brown masked pup, and gave a silly giggle. "I'm Cal - Calixte!" She puffed, not exactly exhausted by the run, but breathless because of her excitement at a soon-to-be-reunion! Giggling in glee, the little one's tail wagged sloppily behind her as she laughed at her new friend. "I'd forgot to tell you!" For some reason, that was funny to the pup but it wasn't hard to keep the little girl amused. "What about you?"
Weaving in and out through the underbrush, it wasn't long before the sound of puppy paws slapping against earth could be detected. A scent of another wolf, similar to her new friends but different all the same was captured, and she half squealed as she burst through the underbrush. Skittering to a halt, her eyes landed upon a proud looking fluffball of a puppy settled high upon a rock. He looked similar to to her friend, though his colours were more black than brown and he seemed. . . impressive! His eyes weren't the same colour, and he didn't have nearly as much brown on his face. . . . but instinct told her they were related, and Calixte came to a skidding halt in front of the rock.
Her tail wagged happily behind her as she stared up at the stranger, chest heaving from her run. "Is this - is this him?" She questioned her nameless friend Rend, giggling as she glanced over her shoulder to see. She was quite sure that this rock dweller was indeed whom they had come to see, but who knew? Maybe there were more than one puppy in the area. . . Rising, she trotted back to Rend, walking a circle around him and giving him an encouraging and quite happy nuzzle.
Yes, she liked physical attention and wasn't shy to give it freely to her friends.

"Calixte.." he returned, making sure it stuck in his brain. "That's ok" he assured, almost sheepishly. And it was ok that she'd forgot. It wasn't something he had thought of himself until now anyway.
His name? His... he hated it. Rend.. he didn't want to be Rend. He wanted to be the opposite! Sweet and loving and... now he wanted to start crying again. Quiet all of a sudden, and shy again, he dropped back. He didn't want to tell her his horrible name... but a lie would only confirm how horrible it was.
"I'm Rend" he mumbled, hoping she couldn't hear him, or would hear something else and just assume... but then again, Maim would surely say his name when they were all three together, and it would just be bad either way. Now he really dreaded seeing his brother.
He knew they were way too close to try to lead Calixte away though. She could smell and track like Maim himself, something Rend had never really got the hang of. His fears were confirmed when she dashed through the bushes only to halt a few seconds later. He hadn't seen his brother, as he hadn't thought to look higher up.
But there he was, the god, Maim.
Maim watched as the female puppy skittered through the bushes and stopped before him. Her golden hue, the way it melted down her body and faded to white... reminded him of the morning, and he smiled. A little part of him felt a peace with that, and with the happiness it brought him, he found it was hard to keep his composure.
The thing about puppy love...
He snuffed that thought as it came to him, grinning inwardly as his mind tried to turn philosophical on him. He didn't question why he was this way more and more as days wore past... he just WAS this way.
"Hi Rend, are you alright brother?" he questioned in good nature. Not as though he were taunting Rend for being lost, more in that at least part of him was glad to have his brother back.
Maim hopped off the rock, landing a respectable distance from the two pups as the female nuzzled his brother. "And you are, m'lady?" No one had taught him the manners he exhibited, but they were there none the less. He charmed from the heart, not just for the sake of charming. He meant every word, every gesture.
The thought that he would one day be a 'lady killer' made him shiver in anger. That's what his father did... that- The literal meaning weighed heavy on his mind, though he tried to push it away and take it for the whimsical meaning most used it for.

Rend. The little pup did well to tuck the name away as she didn't want to forget the name of her very first, absolutely best friend in the world! Maybe he wouldn't be too mad, though, if she accidentally forgot - names escaped her frequently! Thankfully though, Rend's fears would not be recognized as the golden touched pup hadn't any idea what the word meant. To her, it was a name, and a perfectly good one if she had to think about it. Now that she knew he was Rend, no other name could possibly fit him better!
Standing beside her friend, her ears twitched and her ever sweet smile stayed painted upon her features. She watched as this other brother leapt from the rock, greeting his brother and inquiring about his health. What was it like to have siblings? Calixte remembered being alone, before she was taken in by Bindi and her pack. Now she had a lot of family, even if she wasn't particularly close with many. Yet. It wasn't' the same as having a brother or sister, or so she imagined. . . But, even if she had no blood relations, it was nice to see two who did have each other!
And it seemed her Rend was very close to his sibling.
That was sweet.
But Calixte's expression faded for just a moment as her ears pricked, turning to better face this stranger. Her smile dropped for a minute as he questioned her and called her nothing more than a lady! Suddenly, her grin returned tenfold in to something akin to radiance and she giggled her absolute charm and delight! "I'm not a lady, silly! Well - not yet at least. I'm too little!" Oh, she wanted to be a lady, yes, but she knew her place as a pup. Someday she'd grow up and become one, certainly, but right now such a title was premature. Still, the compliment made her spirits glow and she giggled again, pawing at the ground. "I'm Calixte, sir!" She teased, eyes bright. "And you're . . . you're Rend's brother!" She didn't know his name, but was certain she'd find out very soon! "But I din' know you were such a gentleman!" What good friends she'd made this day - yes indeed!

He felt as though Maim's words were a facade. He had really glued himself to his brother's words in the past week, really lived by them and depended on them.. but now...
"I'm alright, I just got a little lost."
He felt sick as his brother spoke to Calixte. It didn't seem fair - he had found her first, but he was so gravely unsure of himself that he felt it silly to speak too much in the company of anyone but Maim.
"That's right." he ecchoed the female, somewhat sullenly. "She's not a lady." Not realizing that that might not go over well, he benignly lashed out at his brother. Swallowing hard, he sort of fidgeted from paw to paw. He didn't want to be around when Calixte left them... it didn't seem that things would bode well for the pup when he was alone with Maim.
But that could all be in his head too.
"Sorry brother, I didn't think you would wake before I returned." he spoke, trying to sound sheepish and apologetic. He was, in a way, but... he really just needed his space for a little while, and it was irksome that his brother couldn't just sit tight and wait for him to come back.
Maim grinned hard, eyes equally bright as the puppy corrected him. He ignored Rend's impudent remarks and focused, for the most part, on what the female had to say.
"Calixte is a pretty name!" he exclaimed, striding up to her a bit closer. "I am Rend's brother, I am Maim." he spoke with a bow of his head, extending a paw forward.
It was hard not to blush when she referred to him as a gentleman! He could feel his cheeks grow hot, and he answered after a few moments. "As you do not yet feel you are a lady... yet" he threw in, as she would someday be a lady "I dot not yet consider myself a gentleman." But someday. He flashed her a sincere smile
