Woo, it's been awhile. sweatdrop
Anyhow! Doesn't it annoy the living daylights out of you when you read some fanfiction? The authors warp the characters to suit their story and ignore important details. I was just thinking about it and was wondering what you guys think.

When that happens, I feel absolutely no obligation to finish.
What bugs me more is the stuff that didn't have even a simple spelling/grammar check run on it. I don't mind the odd British instead of American spelling, but someone who uses poor grammar has me hitting the "back" button on my computer really fast.

Or when they only write so they can set themselves up with a character they like. gonk Everything else gets shoved aside for romance.

Yeah, "Mary Sue" stories are horrid. I know there's a couple good ones out there, but I only read them after I saw them reccomended on the lists of some fanfic writers that I really enjoy reading (and who seem to have good taste 3nodding ).

I don't read fan fiction but I'm writing my own based on Tombraider. I'm keeping the plot linked to various things in the games, and trying to keep the character's the way they are portrayed..that's the whole point of fanfiction to me...there's no point theiving someone elses character and idea and then changing the characters to suit you...

I don't read fanfiction all that often these days. Recently, I haven't seen anything that I've liked. I think it's a great creative outlet - and fun to read to boot- but I've always preferred making up my own characters, and my own world.
Then again, there are some authors (and manga creators) who LOVE when people write fanfiction about their characters. I draw the line at celebrity fanfiction. I would feel SO awkward writing and reading about people who actually exist.

What must they think about all these girls writing about them? I'd be frightened, personally.

I always try to research my characters as well as I can when I write fanfiction, but I do sympathize. Some people destroy characters just to make them fit their plot. I've been guilty, I'll admit, but I hope that I've outgrown that as a writer.

I enjoy reading it if it's well written and if they've done they're best to keep the characters to how they're supposed to be. However, in some cases it is next to impossible to not warp them slightly, if nothing else the characters have to grow and develop in response to the events of the story. I'll admit that I am guilty of starting a fanfiction with characters that are somewhat warped from the original, but I was writing it as a "what if this had happened instead of this how would things have been different?"

I don't really like it that much (Mary Sues and high school fics, yuck!), but it can be an excellent time-waster.

I personally like fanfics where the characters are different. Some of them are really weird and unlikely but i think thats half the fun of fanfiction. You can write the story how you want and make the characters the way you want them. Sometimes you have to change them to make the fanfic make any sense. Like for Harry Potte fanfiction. People make Draco nice a lot so he can get together with Hermione. And it wouldnt make any sense if he was how he is in the movies. And sometimes when the characters are changed its just to make a fanfic funny. Like one me and my friend are writing for Harry Potter, where Ginny, Hermione and Pansy are all pregnant. It doesnt go along with the books and the characters are A LOT different but thats the whold point of fanfiction, its the fans job to decide how everyone acts.

I agree that the characters can be changed to make the story funny, but when writers are taking their work seriously and they take extraordinary liberties with characters that are not their own, it makes it really awful to read. I can understand if it's just for fun or something, but for a serious take on your story, you really have to be true to the characters.

I've read stuff based on TV shows that have been on for years, where I know the writers had to have wateched every episode because I'll see a rerun and go, "Hey, I read that somewhere" about a character or event. Sometimes a good fanfic will make me see look at characters about whom I could have cared less in a new light.

I don't mind authors taking liberties with characters sometimes. It gives you a new perspective and tons of new possibilities to consider. Plus, there is the whole "what if" factor.
What I can't stand about fanfiction is bad grammar, spelling, and just plain crappy writing. A few mistakes is fine but when it looks and sounds like a two year old wrote it... gonk

I love to read fanfiction, but I usually stay away from OCs unless they say there is no romance, or very little.
I write a lot of fanfiction, and I'm usually told I get the characters very correct. When I add an OC as part of the major story, I usually forgo romance all together.
