The seasons were changing. The wind brought the scent of fallen leaves and cold from the low lands up into the mountains to wrap around a mare that stood on the edge of a cliff looking down on the Kawani village. She breathed in deeply allowing the scent to fill her, body and soul. Dark lids closed over dark olive eyes as she exhaled and took the almost intoxicating scent in again. The winter was coming, slowly but surly it was coming and with it came the crystal white snows that would coat the land and make it beautiful. She shivered in anticipation. Winter was her favorite time of year and it was the only time she traveled down from her mountain home to visit the lands below.

“Well then...” She said turning away from the sight. Her voice was like ice, beautiful but cold and sharp. “I suppose it’s time I go visit the humans once again.” She let out a harsh laugh at her own joke. She never went to visit the two-leggers. No, no her little visits were simply to catch a glimpse of everything freezing over from up close. She rarely made contact with anyone and when she did it was never a human that she spoke to. Her laughter died down slowly as she began to weave her way through the thin spattering of trees that grew near her perch. She would miss the lovely overlook of everything but it was always worth it to see the iced over lands. She would be back soon enough. She always was.

It wasn't just the seasons that were changing, the stallion could already detect a shift in the herd in which he had grown so accustomed to. No longer foals, those in the immediate view of his watchful gaze had grown and matured to the point that they no longer required him at every waking. Even his relationship with Yei was developing - granted it was slow and she was still exceptionally tentative but a softness now existed that hadn't been there before...Ah yes, even she had gone through some changes that made her seem stronger and calmer.

All in all, the summer had been an eventful one, shifts and changes developing and concluding in the Autumn and thus the herd had settled once again for winter. It was true that for the most part the herd remained spread out across various regions of the Kawani lands but every now and then they would unite just to catch up. Unfortunately today was not one of those days - rather, it was a day in which both Yei and himself parted ways to complete their patrols.

...After all, in winter the slopes could be deadly.

His fiery coat and multicoloured plummage weren't exactly difficult to spot as he paced across the slopes, wings unfurled ever so slightly in case the ground gave way beneath him. So far so good, he had yet to stumble across anything in dangerous territory but alas - he certainly wouldn't put it passed any Soquili to wander in anyway.

A tune more suited for a funeral then anything floated about in the air as Thorn continued her way down the slopes. Her steps were sure and steady on the rocks that could prove treacherous to any unfamiliar with the territory. A cold breeze lifted her long mane off of her shoulders and letting it hang in the air all about her head like delicate silk ribbons. She stopped her travel for a moment to watch the black strands. Beautiful. As the wind let her mane down she gasped, a smile spreading across her face.

Fire. No. Just colored like fire, mimicking it like the leaves that hadn't yet fallen. For a moment her smile faded as she found that it could just be a still leafy tree she was seeing between all the bare ones. From this distance a mistake like that was possible.

Disappointed she stomped into the rocky ground sending a cloud of dust around her feet. She saw trees all the time! While this one had a particularly fine color it was nothing special. Just another tree. She continued pounding into the rocky ground to let her anger out. It was horrible! She couldn't keep a tree and the leaves were to brittle to carry with her. The moment they fell to the ground they would become muddy and disgusting. Useless!

It was something he hadn't seen since Biscuit had been a young foal. That comical moment in which he would vanish, plummeting into a sink hole in the middle of the snow that would cause a 'cloud' to appear above his head. There would be a silence, one of astonishment as his young nephew attempted to figure out what had happened and then he would cry for help.

...All the while, Grencia could do nothing but laugh. He wasn't a bad guardian, it was just that the startled expressions always gave him a giggle.

Nevertheless, as the cloud of dust rose up in the distance he couldn't help but arch a brow. He was reasonably certain that none had entered the territory as of late, similarly he was fairly certain there were no children about so what had caused such a dust cloud? Granted, he hadn't patrolled in quite some time but it still remained to be said...

Flexing his wings just a little to encourage blood flow, he quickened his pace just a little and moved towards the cloud. Hooves making a rather definite crunch against the snow, it was difficult to mistake him for a tree the closer he came. Alas, he didn't choose to speak at this moment in time - an approach was all well and good but he would rather maintain his silence until he was certain that a predator did not lurk under that cloud.

As the cloud rose well above her head she began to calm. It wasn't because she was alright with the disappointment from the tree, no, it was that she couldn't breath or see with a cloud of earth surrounding her face. Once she was free she shook herself off to remove any dirt that may have fallen on her coat. She turned to glare at the tree once again so that she could proceed down the mountains but gasped when nothing was there.

"Trees do not move." She said excitement building inside her. Trees couldn't move, neither could rocks, or bushes or flowers and that meant that some wonderful creature had those amazing fiery colors covering them. Letting out an almost unnaturally high pitched giggle she scanned the skies figuring that it would have to be an exotic bird with brilliant plumage. "Pretty bird come to me. Let me see how pretty you can can be."

She wanted it. Whatever it was she wanted it. She would keep it with her so she could gaze upon it always until she grew bored or it died which ever came first. "Little bird." She giggled in an almost song like way. "Come to me."

"And what little bird would that be?" Having opted to ascend the slope from behind her, the stallion now stood a short distance away with his brow raised. Not exactly in her peripheral vision, he wouldn't have been seen immediately but the slight shift of a head might have allowed it. Up close, the fiery plumage of his wings - now fully recovered from his brutal battle; were much more spectacular.

In fact, one might say they emanated with an odd glow.

Neither his mate or he were concerned with their exotic glow, neither questioned it. Instead, his mate embraced his qualities lovingly and savoured every little thing - with the glow came a warmth that few possessed. He was (quite literally) a walking furnace and thus, he was perhaps one of the few stallions who could keep a mountain dwelling mare warm...especially in winter.

Ah the joys of being a phoenix!

"As far as I was aware, all the song birds had migrated south for the approaching winter," apparently bemused by her lyric. Alas, he wasn't aware of her rather warped and possessive nature but even if he had been he was unlikely to be concerned. Quick on his feet and with the ability to fly...there was little for him to be concerned about.

"Hmmm?" The words of her song had died off but the tune still remained in her voice as she turned to face the rather unannounced presence. Her eyes widened and her mouth formed an 'o' of shock once she realized what, well, who she was looking at. There was no mistaking that fire-like color. "It would seem that not all the birds have left yet..." She said taking note of the feathery wings growing from his back. It would seem her bird wasn't really a bird at all but one of her species, only winged.

She took a couple steps closer to the stallion humming her little song as she looked him over. This was so much better then a tree or a bird. True it could be harder to convince her own race to stay with her but the chore would be well with it for this catch. His coat was almost identical to a flame in color not just mimicking it like the leaves of autumn did. Bright green eyes seemed to pierce her very soul and rainbow tips on amazing wings. Thorn couldn't help but shiver in excitement. It had been so long since she had seen something so lovely.

"You are very beautiful." She said as though stating a fact as obvious as the sky being blue. In her mind it was obvious. Of course in her mind the world would stop turning if she wished to gaze at the moon for a moment longer.

"You have my thanks," Grencia replied in a rather gracious manner, his head bowed in response to the otherwise 'obvious' statement. Having grown accutomed to the words as a foal, and later as a colt he had accepted the fact that he was attractive and now refrained from saying anything in relation to it. His looks were a blessing and once he had used them as such but now...Not so much. Rather, he found that the creature that he chose to pursue was less inclined towards his looks and was suitably more obsessive about his nature.

"However not all 'birds' need to migrate, some of us are capable of maintaining heat and enjoying the delicate kiss of winter." Truth be told he would hardly call a winter's breath a kiss at all but he had lived on the slopes all his life. Knowing no different, accustomed to the mountains and their charms, he embraced it. So it was cold but an inner fire really did boil within him to keep him warm even if others required much thicker coats than he.

"And some of us our bound to a place," he mused after a few moments of consideration, "Though one might say my eyes have never fallen upon one such as you...A stranger to my lands while I roam them often. You are?"

He spoke beautifully. Not at all like what she had expected. No she had been assuming he would speak with the grace of a drunk like the other horses she lived with. No, this was indeed a pleasant and beautiful surprise. "My name is Thorn." She answered bowing her head in the same way the winged stallion had done moments before. She would never say anything to the fiery stallion but he was extremely lucky. She never gave out her name freely, it was something that needed to be earned from her and the only way to earn this was from her to consider some one equal in beauty.

"And, who might you be, sir? You must have a lovely name to match that coat and mind of yours."

How would she do this? It was easy to keep someone near when you were conversing with them but she could not speak forever and she could assume that he would be unable to as well. She also could not simply pick him up like she did with fruits, berries and flowers. Small animals were easily persuaded with the promise of food or protection but he did not seem to be hungry at all and he seemed perfectly capable of defending himself.

This was going to be tricky and harder yet would be to continue the conversation with hinting to what she was planning.

"Grencia," he replied smoothly, no hesitation in his voice as the pleasant smile slipped to his lips and brightened his expression considerably. Ever the youthful colt at heart, it perked up his demeanour and with it he seemed to grow brighter. It wasn't that he grew brighter in reality, he just seemed to emanate a little more depending on his stance...something that most had an ability to do if they put their minds to it.

"Whether you choose to deem this a delightful name is entirely how you choose to perceive it," Ever the social creature he gave his wings a light flutter. While not aware of her plotting, it would be unfortunate in the moments she discovered he was actually claimed by another but such things were unavoidable it was just a matter of how she executed such a peculiar plan.

"Nevertheless I extend my gratitude for the compliments and must say it is a pleasure to meet you though it is rare I miss another from these parts..." He really was curious, he was certain he hadn't been distracted for long and yet there were always so many new faces. "How long have you roamed in these parts if I may be so bold as to ask?"

Grencia. Bright fiery, winged stallion Grencia. She imagined that if she were to say them allowed those words would sound beautiful. She also imagined that if that particular stand of words were to leave he mouth she would lose her chances at keeping him. "Grencia..."She said settling to just repeat the name. It sounded a bit strange coming from her mouth and she quickly decided that she wouldn't use his name again. A voice like melting ice did not flatter the sound his name one bit. "It is, as I expected, a lovely name."

She smiled fully intending to step closer as she usually did when making a catch but the movement of those feathery wings stopped her in her tracks. Her mind blanked on any plans she had been formulating in her mind as her eyes locked on the great and gorgeous feathers. She wanted one. Even if he somehow managed to get away she wanted one of those feathers. She would keep it safe behind her ear like her swan feather and she would keep it from getting wet or sticky or unpleasant or...

She blinked and looked up her trance broken by a question. "You mean the mountains?" She asked straightening herself to hide that she had just been openly staring at him. "I've been here forever and a day as the saying goes. I was born in these mountains and I was raised in these mountains and I rarely leave."

Clearly he wasn't as observant as he once was, he may have been old but apparently his sight had dwindled to the point where he missed individuals he should have long ago introduced himself to. In a way it was somewhat amusing, laughable given that in all honesty he had been distracted for 'forever and a day' by his own drama and adventures but all the same...he knew a certain someone would be less than impressed by the news of his 'failings'.

"I see, then might I request you forgive my insolence in failing to introduce myself sooner," ever the polite one, grencia continued in the pursuit of his well spoken ways and merely siled just a tad more as she admired his feathers. Ah, he knew that look better than anyone, to see those eyes light up with the slightest ruffle and he knew... Like a child in a candy store, or rather a foal in an apple orchard she had found somethign she wanted.

It was amusing, he had never heard any other male encounter the same silent request over and over again.

However, given that which he had endured in the last few years of his life his wings might have been a pride to him but they were also something to be shared. He had nearly lost what he wanted most because of them and then during a conflict, had nearly lost his wings too. No, if others found enjoyment in them he had decided to let them be a part of it.

"Would you like one?" he enquired curiously.

Her dark eyes brightened considerably at his offer. A feather? He would just let her have one of his feathers just like that? "I would like all of them actually." She said without a hint of a joke in her voice. It was far from the subtle approach she had been looking for and even further from the traps. He had offered thought and she would have those wings even if she couldn't manage to keep their owner with her.

((Oh geez...so short. Sorry ^^;; ))

Grencia chuckled softly at her tone of voice. She seemed so incredibly serious about his wings and yet, from a logical point of view the demand she made was impossible. For this reason he could only assume she was joking and flicked his ears forward. Mirth still lining his features he could do nothing more than shake his head and keep his gaze fixed on the mare.

Whiskers twitching just above his eyebrows, he considered her words for a short while and came to a decision on how to approach them. It was best not to tease strangers given the risk they would take it seriously, but he was going to have to say something to accompany his chuckle - after all, chuckles could be considered mocking too!

...Ah the complex nature of social gatherings.

"Unfortunately I cannot provide you with a full set of wings, merely feathers given the limbs are stuck." He pointed out wryly.

Her face fell at this announcement. Stuck? That didn't seem fair at all. She did not want only one feather. She didn't even want to settle for three of four. No, she wanted the whole wing but somehow she got the feeling that asking him to break his wing off for her would go over about as well as her telling him to stay with her until she grew tired of him.

"The feathers do detach though, correct?" It wasn't really much of a question as she already knew the answer. "Then you could just give me all the feathers. That would be almost as good as having the whole wing, don't you agree?" She was smiling now in a way that would make filly's look wicked and she still wasn't joking. She would have those feathers.
