Below is an idea i came up with for magical duels, please let me know if it makes sense and what you think about it.:

This is based on a rolling system, much like the quiditch game, however, due to the fact that the longer you've been in school, the more you should know, there will be some slight changes based on years.

At the start of a duel both participants (or more if there are more than 2) will roll a d20 to see who will go first, 2nd. 3rd, etc................

Logically the Highest roll will have initiative and be the first to act.

Then the second person has a chance to React.

Each time a person casts a spell they must roll a d20 to see if they cast it correctly sad Known as Spell Casting)
a 10 or above means that they have appropriatly cast the spell, jinx, or charm
a 8-10 means that they did not cast the spell correctly and it backfired on them
a 4-7 means that the spell fizzled and didn't do anything
a1-3 means that they didn't even cast the spell

((EX: in class Gabby is practicing her Lumos Spell, she posts that she casts it and rolls 1 d20 when she posts. she rolls a 5 meaning her wand flichers on and then fizzle out with in less then a second. So she tries to cast the spell again, and again she posts and rolls a d20, this time she gets a 12, so her spell works))

But that's not all folks:

how do we determine in a duel, who's spell wins?
Easy, we roll the die
This time we roll a d20, where the higher number over powers the lower number.
This roll should be made at the same time as the Spell's roll if in a duel

((EX: Sam and Lupy get into a duel, Sam rolls a 14 and lupy rolls a 8 to see who goes first:
Sam casts Confundus at Lupy.
Sam would roll 2 d20 when posting that she casts the spell
(she rolls a 10 and a 15) The first one tells us that she casts the spell, the second one tells us what her spell power is.
Now Lupy casts a expelliarmus spell at the same time and rolls a 18 and a 13, the 18 tells us that he casts the spell properly, and the 13 tells us his spells power.
Now both of them cast the spell properly, however, Lupy's spell was not as strong as Sam's so Sam is able to confundus Lupy, and Lupy is NOT able to disarm her.))

The Yearly changes:
As i said early the longer you have been a student at Hogwarts, the more you should know, there for the following are apoints that can be added on to a persons rolls based on their year:

1st years: 1 point towards Spell Power (since they are just learning the spells they get no points towards Spell Casting)

2nd years: 2 points towards Spell Power and 1 point towards Spell Casting

3rd years: 3 Points towards Spell Power and 2 Poinst towards Spell Casting

4th years: 4 Points towards Spell Power and 3 points towards Spell Casting

5th years: 5 points towards Spell Power and 4 points towards Spell casting

6th years: 6 points towards Spell Power and 5 points towards Spell Casting

7th years: 7 Points towards Spell Power and 6 points towards Spell Casting

Teachers: 10 Points towards Spell Power and 10 Points towards Spell Cast

((EX:5th year Kitanna casts a Flipendo Spell, she rolls a 8, but after adding her Spell Casting bonus her total is a 12 meaning she casts it properly))

((EX: 3rd year Sam tries to Duel 5th year Nick. Sam gets a higher initiative roll and gets to cast first. Sam casts a Stupefy Spell and rolls a 9 and a 12 (she adds her 2 spell casting bonus to the 9 making it an 11, and then adds her 3 spell power bonus to the 12 making it a 15).
Nick Fires back with an Obliviate Spell and rolls a 14 and a 11 (he adds his 4 spell casting bonus to the 14 making it a 18, and his 5 spell power bonus to the 11, making it a 16). Both duelers are able to cast their spells, but Nick out powers Sam with a 16 versus her 15 and there for only his spell hits it's target and works))
