It was the first of the few days without Dyre that would continue to occur as the foals continued to grow. Like last time, family days were more common around the birthing and during early youth hood, but as time passes, youth wanes, and soon, the young adults feel it necessary to leave home for days at a time, which is when the family finally disperses until a well-needed reunion. But now were the days of family again.

Maize's beaming face and radiant positive energy remained true and lasting throughout the ordeal of raising foals again. After all, it couldn't have been as enduring as last time, since experience was on her side... right?

She stepped slowly out of the boundaries of her home, leading her foals into exploration of the unknown (for them, anyways). She had kept watch over her foals for almost every moment of their lives, until Dyre had taken her filly to watch over for a few days himself, and to perhaps make acquaintances with his own two-legged caretaker. Well, at least Maiara will see her older brother, Savais, Maize thought fondly. No doubt Maiara had brought great joy to her, being her only daughter--that, and she possessed scarce remnants of what Maize used to call mother...

Maize sighed placidly as she looked over her shoulders, spotting her other two colts. Ah, if only they had not taken to Stormwild so well--with Mire's wings, and Makke's tribal markings... Despite the obvious features, she still loved them dearly, but if only..!

Makke had been trailing along after his mother, and then his older brother quite clumsily. A lot of the times he felt out of place, having the only strange various patterns across his coat that neither his mom or dad even had! But he supposed it was bearable, because at least he didn't have the weird things coming out of his sides like Mire had!

He giggled to himself quietly, stealing a glance at the back of Mire. He couldn't help but put another question in his mind: how would things like those feel like? But perhaps that is something that he will never find out. Ah, well, Makke disregarded as he found the strength to run satisfactorily up to Mire's flank, pushing him playfully to the side. After the contact, he scrambled towards his mother as if Mire had wanted to return the favor to him.

Mire didn't understand why Mother acted the way she did, but he figured that's the way Mothers were supposed to act (seeing as how she'd been the only one he'd ever met). She seemed loving, but distant at the same time. And, on occasion, he'd catch her staring at the tiny winged appendages attached to his sides. He didn't know what her staring meant, but, all the same, he enjoyed the attention it brought him.

Lost in thought, it wasn't until he felt a forceful shove to the side that he realized what was going on. Letting out a small laugh, he attempted to push back against his brother, but was too slow, as Makke had already dashed forward to hide behind their taller Mother.

Grinning, he gritted his teeth and charged ahead, rambunctious and anxious to return the playful blow.

There were a lot of reasons for Daze to be wandering away from his usual haunts, usually, however, they all boiled down to one thing; he was in trouble. Or, at least, he thought he was in trouble, and he probably should have been due to his many tendencies to do troublesome things.

However, this foray was entirely due to guilty conscious. You see, the apples had actually been left out for him. He didn't know it though, so after his daring-do he'd decided that he was certainly going to be in a whole load of trouble unless he disappeared for awhile.

Hence, his current location, fretfully looking over his shoulder every few moments to make sure he hadn't been followed.

Of course it was worth it.

As distracted as he was he didn't even realize where he'd ended up, so the appearance of others in the distance rather shocked him. He tilted his head for a moment, stopped dead in his tracks, trying to identify the figures.

"Mom?"

..if only Maize had been paying more attention to her surroundings! She lost herself in thought, continuing to walk towards nowhere in particular after checking to make sure Mire and Makke were following, and soon found herself looking right at her eldest son!

"Daze!" she said, startled, stopping immediately. The latter brought upon a hard crash from her behind, and she turned at once to find little Makke on the grass right at her tail.

"Makke!" Maize voiced another of her son's names, and bent down to aid him up again, nudging him with her muzzle. "Take more care in your surroundings, to see what's going on," she said softly, knowing that she should also take her own advice to heart. After making sure Makke was up on his legs again, she gave him a quick comforting nuzzle. In addition, she glanced at Mire for a fleeting moment with a stern look, conveying to him that he should quit the apparent roughhousing.

Turning back to Daze, Maize stepped forwards to nuzzle him in greeting, inquiring him, "How have you been since last, Daze?" Which of course, would have been a strange question to ask if you put aside Maize's motherly habits, since they had seen each other just a couple of days ago. Backing a bit to look Daze over some more, she realized he looked a bit... well, worried. "Nothing is wrong, right?" she asked tentatively.

Oh, Makke had been in for it since his tactful hit-and-run. He thought he reached safety when he reached his mother, but his thoughts failed him as he halted for a moment to turn back to see how Mire had been faring. As soon as he did so, he felt a blow himself, running into his protector. As he collided, a short "Oof!" sounded as he found himself on the ground.

After getting the required nursing from his mother, Makke stared at the figure that stood in front of her and his eyes widened--he then totally forgot about any type of payback for Mire's own. "Brother Daze!" he squeaked out, though he didn't manage to interrupt his mother's questions to Daze. He ran around Daze once, and then returned to stand beside Mire, pushing him on the side with his own--though this time, it was done lightly. "It's our brother!" he said excitedly, as if he didn't state the obvious. A smug smile rested upon his face as if he had taught Mire something new.

Mire snorted and suppressed the laugh as he watched his younger brother collide head on into their mother. Served him right!

When Mother turned back around and gave him the reproachful look, however, Mire felt his ears flattening, somewhat ashamed for having acted up. Curious as to what has caused his mother to stop, he took a few steps forward, his little locks of white and gray hair bouncing with each step. He grinned wide when he noticed his older brother standing on the other side of Mother (older brothers were totally cool, after all), and made it a point to nudge his younger sibling back when Makke made his comment and once again pushed against his side.

"I knoooow Makke," he hissed back, not wanting to interrupt his Mother's conversation, and receive yet another 'Look'. "What do you think he's been doin'?"

Daze smilled quickly, tail flicking slightly as he trotted forword to greet his family.

"Oh, I'm good mom, everything is perfectly fine," he said, looking behind his mother at his new little brothers, who appeared to be razzing eachother.

"No, I was just, you know, coming to see my loving mother and adorable little siblings, of course."

Okay, so maybe it was a lie, but it sounded a lot better then, say, 'well, I stole some apples and I don't want to get in trouble so I just wandered away and ended up here'. Yes, alot better.

"Anyway, what are you up to? Where's Maiara?"

Maize was of course delighted to hear that her eldest son had been doing well, but tilted her head in slight worriment when he voiced his objective. Loving mother and adorable little siblings? she repeated in her head. My, when did Daze become so affectionate and caring! However, she sensed that what he had said may have been a little ways off from the truth, but her heart shrugged it off, favoring the contented lightness of the situation and finding it unnecessary and irrelevant to delve in further to Daze's mystery.

After Daze asked of the whereabouts of Maiara and such, Maize gestured with a flick of her head to walk towards the nearby running stream lined with a couple of overgrown trees, assuming her two littlest ones would follow as well. It would be their first adventure into a less calm part of the waters they knew near home, and she was grateful that she had her older son's presence through this moment as well.

"I'm out getting these two to see new things, perhaps, and get accustomed to farther parts of their home." Maize interrupted herself to turn back to check on Mire and Makke again, and, finding their actions for the moment suitable for safe play, went back to Daze's other question, "And Maiara is with your father and Savais. I suppose he wanted to get her to meet his caretaker."

And then she found her eyes following Mire and Makke once more, a thought brewing in her mind. "Why don't you go have some fun with your younger brothers?" she suggested with a slight smile tugging at her mouth, wondering whether Daze still had some exuberance and youth in him. She had certainly let go of most of that temperament over the seasons, which made it a bit more difficult to cope with the high energy her new brood displayed.

At Mire's question, Makke simply shook his head slowly, unable to answer. With intrigued eyes he feasted on the interactions and words between his mother and oldest brother, enjoying even the slightest moment of inattention.

And then, suddenly, a question sparked up in his mind, to which he turned to face Mire again to ask in a hushed voice so that neither his mother or Daze would hear: "Why don't all of us live together?" He paused and quickly continued, "Like how daddy lives with Savais--"he had a bit difficulty pronouncing his other older brother's name, but it was still remotely clear whose name he had stated--"and maybe Maiara now... and their two-footed animal?" He blinked profusely at Mire, as if the answer was going to get there faster if he did.

Upon his mother's walk towards the water which rushing noise became almost immediately apparent, Makke stayed back to look at the thin line of water from afar. He had never seen such a narrow place where water rested in! His home, with the rest of the family had always been next to a large expanse of water--the lake, which he enjoyed splashing around in occasionally whether it was with friends to his residence or by himself. At once, he immersed himself with questions of this discovery... How did the water shrink from a lake? Why was it rushing in one direction? And why did it make so much noise?!

Mire had almost been too enthralled in his mother's conversation with Daze to notice that his other brother was offering him a question. Shaking his head, Mire let the question sink in and mulled over it.

After a few moments of blank stares and creased eyebrows, the colt finally cocked his head to the side and stared back at Makke. "I dunno!"

He grinned, and felt his tail swishing back in forth as the youthful energy continued to consume him. "But I do know I want me one of those two-legged pets! Imagine what you could make it do, Makke! Get you apples, brush the twigs out of your mane..."

Thoughts continued to pour out until Mire saw his mother nod them towards another direction, and he was quick to obediently follow. He wasn't sure of the narrow water thing that lay ahead of them, not when he was used to the larger lake near their home, so he made sure his mother remained between himself and the waterway, ignoring his silent brother, who seemed to have a puzzled look on his face.

Daze flicked his ear, picking up his mother's direction with minimum effort, following at a respectful distance. It wasn't a sign of respect in his case, rather more a certain knowledge of the tendencies of young foals to monopolize space, causing inconveniences such as tripping and stumbling and stepping-upon. He was a little surprised though, the waters weren't exactly torrid, but Maize was very protective and the foals were very young. He supposed mothers new best though, he was certain he'd heard it somewhere before. No doubt from a mother.

"Ah," he nodded. That made sense, his brothers were bound to explore, and if his mother was there they'd no doubt find less trouble.

And his father and brother... Well, they weren't close, but he'd never really questioned it himself. He figured it wasn't his place, especially since he wasn't exactly close to home most of the time either.

"Well, that's nice. Hopefully it's not a weird one, those creatures can be strange."

He wrinkled his nose. His was strange. And strict. Apples were free to everyone, they grew on trees, no one owned the trees (except maybe the trees themselves), so who was she to get angry?

So absorbed in his inner thoughts, Daze almost missed what his mother said to him next. Blinking quickly he thought about what she had said with intense concentration.

"Oh, uhm," he started, looking at the foals with a bemused expression, "I guess? Uhm."

He shook his head and tried hard to think of something to do with the two of them. He didn't really understand kids; they were so much less... whatever then he was. And they tended to end up pushing him around, which he didn't understand since he was smarter then them.

"How are you two then?"

Maize conveyed a confident look of encouragement to Daze, noticing his hesitation in accepting her request. She accepted that her son was never the type to go into any deep type of conversation that involved critical thinking, though she had hoped at times that he would be able to grasp onto some form of maturity or enlightenment. For now, she thought it would have been better if he bonded more with his younger peers.

Ending contact with Daze with a nod as his attention went to Mire and Makke, she stepped onto the edge separating land and water, taking her head down into the surface to draw upon the replenishing and healing properties of water. Her eyes closed as she thought to herself quietly. She immersed into thoughts of her heritage, her family. And the trouble that came with being part wind... Out of her six children, two were winged; she could not help but retain the thought that maybe, if none had been given them, they would have had better times.

But she knew she was wrong, and shamed herself for even entertaining the thought. Family was family, and they were clearly a good one where everyone unconditionally supported each other, wind or not. She breathed out calmly and conclusively. All of the members of her family were miracles in themselves, and she was glad to have Dyre to start her family with.

Shaking his head at Mire's lack of an answer, Makke felt a bit agitated. Mire was the oldest, so why didn't he know anything? He knew his mother was smart, and father should be somewhat similar, so did Mire just not inherit intelligence? He grunted, lapsing into his trance of thoughts, oblivious to Mire's appraisal of the two-leggeds.

And soon after, Makke snapped out of his euphoric trance of questioning, bringing himself to realize that everyone had left him a little ways behind. He quickly ran towards where the others had headed, feeling a little irritated that Mire had left him behind for Daze.

He reached the two just in time to miss Daze's question, and so he attempted to busy himself watching his mother drink from the stream. He pondered what she was thinking, and wished to inquire, but perhaps one day in the near future he would understand... His place now was with his two playful, more absent-minded brothers. Why there was almost a drastic family split in personality, he would need to find out one day.

He watched as his mother remained quiet and made her way towards the edge of the stream, leaning her head down to drink from its cool waters. It no doubt had to have been chilly, with the weather changing as it had, and Mire debated on joining her, feeling a bit thirsty himself. The air had grown colder over the past few weeks, not that Mire minded, and the young foal grew more and more excited over the anticipation of the winter months to come. Mother had briefly spoken of this cold 'snow' stuff that covered the ground below, and he couldn't wait to see what THAT was all about!

His mind was quickly distracted, however, when his older brother turned his attention towards him and Makke and questioned them. Eager to respond, the young colt ignored his other brother's gloomy expression and grinned up at Daze. "We're doing really good!" he answered, bobbing his head up in down as he spoke, before turning towards the other colt, "Aren't we, Makke?"

"Oh, that's good," he responded lamely, "uh," he floundered mentally, trying to think of something else to say. What did you talk to kids about? Would they be smart enough to understand? He couldn’t remember much about when he was a kid, not that he was old or anything, and so he was completely at a loss.

"Have you done anything cool recently?"

Ohhh, brilliant. He couldn’t' think of anything else though. Of course, he doubted they had, they were little... little things after all. What kind of trouble could they get in?

What kind of trouble had he gotten in? Oh, right, maybe they did have things to talk about. Probably more then Daze nowadays. He had settled to practically a boring sort. He was going to start getting fat soon, he knew it.

With that thought he started forward again, deciding to get his hooves a bit wet. It was cold for that sort of thing, but it's not like he'd get a better chance as winter continued. If he didn't do it now, he might not get to for some months. One hoof, followed by another, entered the very shallows of the stream, the uncomfortable chill of the water causing a momentary all over shiver.

"Bad idea maybe," he said aloud, a certain amount of amusement in his voice. It was good to be uncomfortable sometimes though, helped you appreciate comforts you'd otherwise miss. Not like he cared much, he was more in it for the tingling feeling.
