Who: Alani, Momo, Brad, Nigh & Smudge
What: Intro RP
When: Afternoon
Where: iJava-bahn Cafe

The man was sorely in need of agreeable company after being nice to Nigh and finding another egg. Brad knew he'd have to go back to speak with Fiach, and he had the distinct impression that the other man would be just as happy never to see him again. With a deep sigh, he pushed open the door to the best cafe in town, secretly hoping to find the one person who could make him smile.

He was immediately taken by the scent of coffee and sweets, a smell as welcome as an old friend. Indigo eyes warmed as they flitted over the occupied tables and chairs, winding his way through towards the WiFi section. There were a few greetings along the way - other regulars that Brad didn't mind - before he reached his destination, a table nestled against the wall with three chairs. Seemed the other was hauled off for use at one of the other tables, and that was just as well to him.

The silver and black laptop was set upon the table with great care, slumping into the seat with another sigh. Now that he was here, he wasn't sure he should have come; he always felt guilty to be grumpy around the woman in his mind. Well. She had a way of making him smile anyway. Now he just had to make sure she was working and could spare a few minutes.

Alani, was in fact working that day. She worked most days, but she really didn't mind. Some people, she mused, probably didn't enjoy working a job like this. They probably hated the daily interaction with customers, they probably hated having to serve others and be sure to get the orders just right, but...

Alani thrived on it. It'd taken her a little while to find her niche, but when she did it'd been making coffee, rather than dropping fries. There was a vast difference between fast food and the dignified little cafe that was iJava-Bahn. For one, the system and those on the 'ladder' were far from corrupt. They had decent ideals and a conscience, they were fair people who valued their employees and customers and actually cared. Alani Celes was proud to work as supervisor here.

With a small sigh she wiped her brow... it was hot behind the counter, and as usual the turning of the season brought around more and more customers. They came in scarves and hats and jackets, asking for mocha, espresso, hot chocolate, chai tea and everything else made every which way. When she saw him enter the mildly busy cafe she gave a sigh of contentment. Leaning over she gently tugged on her co-worker's shoulder, a cashier who'd been here rather long and knew the ropes well. "I'm going to take my break, alright? If you need help, just call me."

She slipped into the back, opening up the office with her set of keys and tugging out her own laptop and tucking it beneath her arm. She moved back to the front. She made two cups of hot chocolate, both using milk rather than water. She poured a small amount of peppermint flavoring into them, and then placed a peppermint stick into each, filling one to the brim with marshmallows, the other topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. She paused a moment before taking two fresh almond biscotti and setting them on a plate as well.

She set it all on a small platter, laptop still tucked beneath one arm, and walked out into the lobby, weaving her way through the crowd to where he sat. She smiled, for a brief moment feeling a flit of shyness that she always seemed to when she saw him, and then sat down beside him. "I bring gifts of coffee and snacks."

He'd been blankly staring at his laptop, still closed, when the seat next to him was suddenly occupied. His eyes lifted to meet hers, and all the grumpy weariness dissolved into a wide and heartfelt smile. "My savior!" he exclaimed, spreading his hands as though in a dramatic play before leaning over and giving her a chaste kiss on the cheek. Brad wasn't usually so affectionate, but he was genuinely happy to see the kind soul that was dear to him. The woman knew just what to do to ease the stress of the day, even knowing his favorite drinks by heart.

"Ah, Lani. Here I was, going to see if I could get you lunch, and you're already a few steps ahead of me. Whatever would I do without you?" His lips quirked into a slightly more playful smile, releasing the latch on his laptop and opening it to reveal the immaculately cared for computer. The screen buzzed to life, displaying an abstract background of smokey swirls; the machine immediately started searching for the nearest internet connection, hooking into the WiFi mere moments later.

Despite his computer's actions, Brad was still watching Alani, his deep voice softening into something a bit kinder. "How's work? You're taking time off other than to grace me with your presence, right?" The man was a workaholic; he understood a love of one's job, but he still tried to put forth the effort to share his hope that the woman was taking a bit more enjoyment out of the season than he was.

Alani opened her laptop as well, sliding Brad's hot chocolate over closer to him so he'd have better access. She absently moused over a familiar icon, getting ready to click it.

"Ah...well." She looked up at him, like a child knowing they're about to be scolded. "It's the holiday season... we've got to release all of the Christmas stuff so we can stay in the running and they need me. I still get my one day." She reached down to pick up her hot chocolate, taking a sip regardless of the whipped cream. When she set her cup down she had a small white dot of it on her nose, unnoticed.

"You should talk..." She gave a small frown. "Do you even remember to eat?"

She glanced back at her desktop - currently the background was set as a soft white snowy landscape to celebrate winter's coming. She gave a small start as she saw that strange icon again, mousing over it and clicking. It didn't do anything, though... "Huh.. Still nothing."

Brad tried to maintain a stern expression, but between being pegged for his bad eating habits and the white smattering of whipped cream on Alani's nose, he was trying not to laugh. It was a strange struggle over his features, pursed lips quivering at the tips, eyebrows arched in unreleased laughter as he tried to maintain a straight face.

It wasn't until she looked a little perplexed at her computer that he won the struggle, swallowing the laughter with a faint smile. Plucking a napkin off the table, he gently took her chin inbetween his forefinger and thumb, turning it towards him while he wiped off the whipped cream. His eyes shifted to her screen, releasing her as he inquired intelligently, "Hmm? Something wrong?"

Computer issues, he could deal with. Alani scolding him for not eating, not so easy to deal with. He picked up his mug with both hands, snatching a stray marshmallow between his teeth as he waited for an explanation.

Alani wasn't at all perplexed as Brad wiped off the whipped cream, her gray-blue eyes still lingering on the computer screen until he let go, and then she turned fully to face it once more. She tried clicking the small, orange and white icon again, watching as the small 'ring' around it spun lazily.

"Hun? Oh well..." She turned her laptop so he could see. "Well... it's this desktop pet. I don't remember downloading it but I must have. Anyway it doesn't really do anything, I've been thinking about deleting it. It's just cluttering desktop space." Alani had a thing against having too many icons on her desktop.

"It's pretty cute, though.. I dunno, I'll give it a few more days. Maybe it just has to hatch." She chuckled, meaning the comment to be a joke. It did seem very egg-like, afterall.

There was an unpleasant tug in Brad's mind, and he brushed it aside as she turned the laptop so he could see. His eyes skimmed over the icons, before resting on an all-too-familiar shape of an all-too-familiar egg. The man leaned back in his chair heavily, groaning out loud and covering his face with one hand, still clutching his hot chocolate. "Oh hell. Not you too."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose between his eyes, his smile gone, his expression tight. With an annoyed sigh, he turned his laptop towards her, using his own mouse to indicate a black and white egg that was just like the orange one on Alani's computer. "It's not a desktop pet, not in the way you think it is." Brad sounded positively miserable, as his problems seemed to all come crashing back down with a vengeance. He'd have to take her to see Fiach...great. Just dandy.

"It's called a Hacker," he explained in a dull voice, "and it's something like a living virus. It'll eat certain files to survive, but...oh, let's just make this easy." With a baleful glance at his screen, he intoned, "Nigh, come out and say hello to Alani."

A small purplish head popped out of the corner of the screen, beady black eyes blinking between the two. A round body followed as the Hacker floated up to the middle of the screen, standing out against the background as he waved a little hand at the woman. A small chat box popped up next to him, black with white words that formed as though typed out.

"That," Brad indicated with thinly veiled annoyance, "is a Hacker."

Alani became distressed as Brad's mood changed for the worse, and she reached out a hand to rest on his shoulder, leaning forward with her head tilted to try and see into his face. What was wrong?

She listened with an expression of confusion as he explained what the small icon was, not really grasping what he was trying to explain. A vrius? That was pretty bad.. but she'd run her virus scan dutifully every night and it'd never picked up anything but a few trojans here and there.

When the small creature floated onto screen and waved she had to cover her mouth with both hands to keep the girlish squeal of delight. She moved her hands away only when she was sure she wouldn't make any unatractivly high-pitched sounds, her eyes wide, her lips grinning. "Oh my gosh, that's so awesome! Is it AI? I've heard about computer programs that are able to memorize the wave-lengths and patterns of your voice, but this is so cool!" She waved her hand very softly at the tiny creature, reaching out unconsciencly to stroke her finger over it's head as though petting it's head (she'd be known to do this to cute pictures of animals, mostly kittens, quite often). "Aww..."

Brad glanced over to Alani and gave a brief, tight smile at her concern, but the smile quickly shifted into blatant shock as she all but cooed at the Hacker. He stared at her as though she had just tried to pet a lion, his jaw tight, eyes wide.

Nigh lifted his little arms as though he would try to hold her finger, but alas, his digital home was also his prison. He smiled cutely all the same, wagging his round posterior with enjoyment. He never got this type of treatment from Brad! The small chest puffed with pride. The word 'his' was outlined like a gaudy marquee as Brad turned his shocked expression towards the laptop.

"You ate my WORK you little heathen!" the man growled at the Hacker, who dived behind the start bar and blinked over it, "You only returned it because I moved you to another computer!"

Brad huffed, agitated by the small thing. His eyes focused on Alani, grimacing a little at his own reaction. "Sorry, he--we, didn't get off to a good start. And now I have another one on my laptop--"

"--and if that one eats my work, I'm afraid I wont be able to recover it." Brad rubbed the back of his neck beneath his shaggy black hair. "I'm not prepared to lose my job over these things." It was the first time outside of Fiach's presence that he had admitted the possibility of losing his job; it would kill the man. He took a deep drink of his hot chocolate to hide his worried expression.

< . . . > The cursor blinked slowly, almost sadly as Nigh held on to the start bar.

The woman was startled as the creature began speaking with her, realization dawning upon her... this wasn't AI. This was a real creature, somehow living though digital and able to think and talk on it's own... or a really elaborate trick. But she doubted Brad would do that too her, and her doubts were further encouraged as Brad spoke harshly.

She cringed back slightly as the small argument went on between them, reaching out lightly when it died to lightly touch Brad's shoulder, leaning close to him so her forehead nearly brushed against his cheek. "Brad... please calm down." She glanced up, noticing the way that the customers were beginning to look up and glance over, some curious, some annoyed. She smiled toward them, lightly petting Brad's shoulder before lowering her head back near him, her voice soft and gentle, hopefully soothing.

"I don't understand... but... uhm.." She didn't really know what to try and say or do to make either feel better. She felt sad that the little creature seemed so sorrowful, but she was upset that Brad was so worked up as well, and she knew him longer.

"Did...he," she motioned with her finger toward Nigh on the screen. "Tell you all of this? I mean.. that he's a 'hacker'. Where did he come from?" All the while she had scooted closer to Brad so they could have the hushed conversation, their hips nearly touching as their heads bowed together. She wanted to say something about him losing his job but that just might worsen the situation and make Brad even more upset. He lived for his work.

"No, I..." He took a deep breath, laying his arm over the back of Alani's chair, putting his mug down. "There's a place that teaches you about these things." Not one to miss an opportunity for some time with his LAN partner, he added, "Let me know when you're off next, and I'll take you there, okay? They're going to need to tell you how to care for your little bundle of joy. We can catch a bite to eat after, and I'll show you what they can do with WoW." Brad allowed a small smile to cross his lips, looking at Alani with more of his familiar kindness.

The man caught the flickering of words out of the corner of his eye, turning to look at Nigh. His smile dimmed a little, but didn't disappear. "Sure. As long as you promise to behave." His hand lifted from her chair to her shoulder, giving her a little squeeze. "What do you say?"

Nigh popped back onto the screen excitedly, practically jumping onto the icon for the game. The text stopped in mid-typing, the Hacker perching on the icon and hopping around it. He could load the thing himself, but he had to behave if he wanted to play with them.

Alani nodded, touching her thumb to her chin in a characteristic show of thoughtfulness. She looked upwards toward the ceiling, trying to recall when she'd have her day off. Conveniently....

"Well.. I'm off work in another four hours today, and then I don't work tomorrow."

She smiled, batting her eyes in mock-coyness. "Dinner and WoW? My, that sounds so romantic." She batted his shoulder playfully. She canted her head slightly to the side in interest at the mention of Nigh being able to play as well. "They can play WoW, too? That'd be fun.. but Alliance..?" She wrinkled her nose slightly. "I guess so."

Speaking of the game she moved over to click the icon, perhaps she and Brad could get a quest done before she had to return to work and he had to go back to doing his own things. She opened the game only to find...

"Damnit, I have to install it -again-." She gave an exasperated sigh, finding the .exe file and beginning the slow process of reinstalling and updating once more. "I guess we can't play before I have to go..." She took another sip of hot cocoa, picking up an almond biscotti and dipping it in. As she held it there she glanced at Nigh, smiling at the excited way he hopped about the World of Warcraft icon. She had a hunch that while Brad may begrudge the critter for eating his files he probably secretly thought it was cute.

The man smiled. "Great! It's a date then." He was only half-joking, raising his arm defensively as she swatted at him; that earned her a soft, short bit of laughter as Brad shook his head, amused. To her Alliance comment, he chuckled deeply, "Nigh has a thing for the gnomes, I'm not entirely sure why." Brad was somewhat surprised that he was able to talk about the Hacker without derision in his voice, but he didn't want to dwell on it too long. He might change his mind.

Indigo eyes flicked over to her screen as she mentioned having to reinstall. It sounded like the problems he was having when Nigh was first found...but maybe...he'd leave it to Fiach, for now. Brad didn't want to start yacking about something he didn't know for certain; he prided himself on what small knowledge he did garner from computer usage. "That's quite all right. I don't mind basking in your presence for the time you do have left." He leaned into the back of his chair, arm draped over hers once again, using his free hand to retake his mug and sip the melted marshmallow and peppermint goodness. "Mmm," he rumbled, closing his eyes, "perfect, as usual, Lani."

Nigh could tell that the attention had shifted from the game to something else; he moved into the middle of the desktop again, making a motion as though pressing his face against the screen. He knew he couldn't have what the human world did, and it made him a little sad. Sure, he had infinite knowledge and snacks at his disposal, but they looked so content with their mugs of something he couldn't fathom. His cursor flicked monotonously, content to watch without being yelled at.
