Malachite is especially fragile. Protect malachite from scratches and sharp blows. Also avoid large temperature changes (such as leaving it be a heater vent or in a hot car). Do not clean malachite in a home ultrasonic cleaner. Washing malachite in water will remove its finish.
Other Information Malachite is not a birthstone, but is the anniversary gemstone for the 13th year of marriage. Malachite is said to bring harmony into one's life, as well as giving knowledge and patience. Malachite was used as a children's talisman to ward off danger and illness, often attached to an infant's cradle. Mining of malachite began as early as 4000 BC by ancient Egyptians. Malachite is found most everywhere; however, the most important mine is in Zaire.

The Role-Play Prompt The Role-Play Prompt Mysterious Narrator from Above We're not quite sure how you managed it, but you crossed an alligator/crocadile infested moat and stumbled into a mansion.
You see many a strange thing and would've continued to look around except you were halted by three children, all boys.
One is a devious and conniving leader of the group, another is the thief and the muscle while the last is a skirt-chaser.
They don't appear to like you, so what're you going to do? Adrian Karlet considered it luck that the draw-bridge over the alligator and crocodile-infested moat had been left down, allowing him to cross over and enter the mansion unharmed. He peered around the entrance hall, thinking to himself that it was a great deal larger than the mansion he currently lived in with his childhood friend, Kanth. It definitely seemed to be well-lived in, whereas Kanth was hardly ever home, leaving him to take care of the place.
The layout of the house was different, he discovered as he turned left and began walking down a hallway, admiring the decorations on the walls. He also discovered that getting lost was a definate possibility and decided that he shouldn't have stepped into the house uninvited, after all.
He began to back-track towards the front entrance, only to stop short at the sight of three small boys blocking his way. He blinked at him, startled for a moment before smiling at them. "Hello," he said, trying not to sound as nervous as he felt. The three were staring at him like they wanted to mug him and toss him into the moat.
"What are you doing in our house?" the first one demanded. The second boy put up his fists and assumed a fighting stance, while the third crossed his arms, looking menacing.
"I just came to have a look around," Adrian replied, holding up his hands in an attempt to show he meant no harm. "I didn't mean to disturb you."
"We don't like trespassers who walk into our house without asking," the third boy replied with a glare.
"I'm sorry," Adrian said to them, "if you want me to leave, then I will."
"Too late!" the second one charged him, fists swinging.
Seeing as he was about two feet taller than the boy, Adrian easily held him back by placing a hand on his head. "Hey, take it easy! I don't want to figh--AGH!"
The other two boys suddenly tackled him, sending them toppling to the ground with Adrian underneath, struggling against his attackers. Someone had him in a head-lock and was tugging on his violet colored hair, while another was going through his pockets and removing what little change he'd brought with him. A tug at his feet led him to assume that a third boy was busy tying his shoe-laces together. He felt someone reach for his belt and yelped as they took it off and unbuttoned and unzipped his pants, tugging them down to his ankles. The belt was used to tie his hands behind his back.
Though he did struggle and try to dislodge the boys, Adrian smiled, letting them have their way with him while thinking of it as a game. A part of his brain argued that, to them, this was no game, but to Adrian, they were just three kids out to cause trouble, just like any other boys their age.
Finally, the three boys sat on top of him and began counting out his money. Adrian sighed, trying to look over his shoulder at them.
"Pitiful," the first boy spat with a look of mild disgust, "you must be really poor."
"Sorry, I wasn't planning on having anyone rob me today," Adrian replied coolly.
"Shut up!" the second one elbowed him in the ribs, causing him to cry out.
"Can I go now?" the third one asked with a whine, eyeing one of the maids as she walked past the door. "I've got better things I could be doing than just sitting here."
"Fine, fine," the leader grumbled, splitting the money three ways and giving the other boys their shares.
Adrian felt one of them get off of his thighs and sighed as the blood resumed flowing through his legs. "So, what are you boys going to do to me, now?" he asked non-chalantly, as if he were in control of the situation.
"Feed you to the crocs," one suggested.
"Use you as a punching bag," another chimed in.
"Throw you into the torture chamber."
"Let GD trip over you on his way to the bathroom"
"And hope he vomits on you before he gets there."
"Lovely," Adrian replied dryly, rolling his eyes. "I suppose you haven't thought of letting me go?"
"Of course not!" the leader growled. "We can't let trespassers go unpunished!"
"You wouldn't consider making an exception?" Adrian asked with a slight pout. "I'll do something nice for you, if you'll let me go."
Though the third boy just shook his head and walked off, the second one seemed interested. "What'll you do for us?"
Adrian shrugged his shoulders. "Almost anything you want," he replied.
The two looked at each other and began whispering conspiratorially, considering their options. Adrian looked hopeful, though his face was still squashed into the carpet. He couldn't hear much of what they were saying, so he lay there, patiently awaiting their answer.
Finally, the leader looked at him and said dramatically, "Go and bring us... a shrubbery."
Adrian groaned, turning to smack his forehead into the floor. And he thought his kids watched too many movies...
"One that looks nice," the second boy said.
"And not too expensive," the first added.
"Okay, one nice, inexpensive shrubbery, got it," Adrian mumbled into the carpet. The boys didn't move from their places on his back. "Are you going to let me up so I can go get it?"
"No," the leader grinned evilly, "you're taking us with you, and you're going like this."
Adrian blanched, turning to gape at him. "Tied up and pantsed and everything?"
"Yup!" the boys said together, straddling his back and finding whatever handholds they could.
He groaned again, trying to lift himself off the ground. Next time, he decided gloomily as someone grabbed at his hair again, I'll kick the crap out of them and be done with it...

Homecoming "Hey, guys, I've got someone I want you to meet," Adrian called out through the hallway of the eastern wing of Kanth's mansion, where he and his ever-growing family had taken over most of the rooms. The owner of the house, Kanth, hadn't been around very often to voice any disapproval, so he'd just gone ahead and cleaned out whatever rooms he needed and moved their contents into other spare rooms throughout the house.
The little ones tumbled out of his bedroom, first. He always let them sleep in there until he decided that they were old enough to have rooms of their own. The boy behind him hid behind his guardian's legs, peering out at them shyly. One appeared to be a shark that was... hovering in the air; another was a small, white and blue, fuzzy creature with a skull on its head; there was pink and yellow animal with large ears and a long tail; and finally, a bright, gold-colored egg with shimmering butterfly wings fluttered along with the pack.
A fifth creature, not nearly as young as the others, also stepped out into the hallway from the bedroom, looking rather bored and uninterested in whatever Adrian had to say. He appeared to be some sort of lion-deer-snake-hybrid-thing.
"Hana! Kaleb!" Adrian called out sternly, "Now, please!"
"ALRIGHT," was the impatient screech from behind one of the closed doors. It opened quickly and out stomped a tiger-like girl in jeans and a dark colored tank-top. Her eyes were blazing and her face bore a sour expression as she crossed her arms and glared at Adrian.
The young man sighed, glancing at the other closed door. "Kaleb~" he repeated, and one of the little creatures -- the golden egg with butterfly wings -- bumped purposefully into the door, as if knocking. The egg ducked away as the door swung open, revealing a pink-haired young man with brown dog ears and a tail. He blinked at the menagerie gathered out in the hall, looking rather confused.
"Come out here for a moment, please?" Adrian nearly begged him. The youth rolled his eyes but complied, stepping outside his bedroom.
"Okay, now that I've got you all out here," the guardian said, grinning, "I'd like to introduce the newest member of our family, Malachite." He stepped aside, leaving the green-haired kiddlet standing there in full-view of the others.
"You brought home another one?" the one called Kaleb groaned, narrowing his eyes at the boy.
Malachite went back to clinging to Adrian's leg as the young man replied, "Nope! Malachite is one of a kind!"
The cat-girl rolled her eyes, turning to head back into her room without another word.
The yellow and pink creature stepped forward, sniffing at the new boy cautiously. Malachite blinked at her and Adrian gently ruffled his hair. "That's Alfie," he said, gesturing to the creature, "she's a Jivvin. And the blue one over there," he pointed to the one with a skull, "is Schye, but he's shy around new people."
To demonstrate, Schye just backed away a bit from the new-comer, hiding behind the lion-deer-snake-thing.
"That's Cyrus," Adrian continued, pointing to the creature Schye was hiding behind, "and he's a Chimaera. Don't worry, he's pretty harmless."
Cyrus gave a shake of his head, his mane ruffling and his snake-like tail flicking proudly.
"Let's see, who else," the guardian took stock of whom he'd introduced and whom he hadn't. The egg floated over and down, balancing on Malachite's head. The boy blinked up at it, trying not to move his head. "Ah, yes," Adrian grinned, "that's Haruki. He's a tsubasa. And the shark-girl over there," he pointed, "is Mackenzie. Hana just went back into her room; it'd probably be best to avoid her. Kaleb is the boy over there."
The pink-haired youth gave Malachite a quick V-sign, saying, "Don't come in my room; don't touch my stuff; don't bother me." With that, he, too, went back into his room, shutting the door behind him.
Malachite heard his new guardian sigh again and looked up, displacing Haruki who fluttered in mid-air.
Adrian looked down at him with a smile, "Don't mind Kaleb and Hana. They're big kids and not used to taking care of little'uns. Maybe they'll loosen up after you're here a while."
The boy nodded a bit, starting as Alfie licked at his hand, her tail wagging playfully.
"In the meantime, I guess you can hang out with these critters," Adrian said, watching as Cyrus headed back into their bedroom, and turning to the door next to Kaleb's. "This will be your room," he said cheerfully, reaching for the handle and pushing the door in.
Malachite peered inside, stepping towards the room cautiously. It had a nice, large bed, as well as a bureau and a desk. The floor was made of polished hardwood, though there was a round rug in the middle of the room. There were two windows in the farthest wall, covered by pale green curtains that reached the floor.
"I'll have to get you over to the mansion so you can play with boys your own age," Adrian was saying as he stepped inside, moving to open the curtains and let the afternoon light in. "If you find anything you'd like to decorate your room with, let me know, and I'll put it up for you right away, okay?" he asked, turning and giving Malachite a smile.
The boy just nodded again from where he was standing in the doorway, patting Alfie on the head. He turned to watch Haruki and Mackenzie fly around in circles in the hallway, playing tag with each other. It was a strange new family, he decided, but it was his new family. And that was all that mattered.

Bedtime After a couple of hours of tossing and turning, Malachite finally lay on his back and stared at the ceiling, listening to the mansion around him and starting at any strange sounds. He wasn't used to sleeping by himself, and he figured that that was the reason for his insomnia. At the other mansion, he'd never been alone, as he was always following after someone and the kiddlets often slept together as a group.
Now, he had his own great big room and a bed that threatened to swallow him up.
The house made another loud creak and he sat up, peering into the darkness quickly before sliding out of bed. He shivered as his small, bare feet touched the cold floor, and he padded towards the door, the moonlight through the window guiding his steps.
Malachite peeked out into the dark, silent hallway before making his way towards the other occupied bedrooms. He considered seeking out the two older "kids," but after their less-than-warm welcome earlier that day, he quickly decided against it, heading for Adrian's room, instead.
The door had been left open wide enough for the youngest family members to slip through incase of a bathroom emergency in the night. Malachite pushed the door open a little wider, stepping into the room quietly. He spotted his "siblings" sleeping in baskets on the floor along one wall, and one of them -- the pink and yellow one, Alfie -- lifted her head as he came in, blinking at him sleepily before yawning and going back to sleep.
Malachite eyed the large bed along the wall to his left where his new guardian, Adrian, was snoring. The kiddlet managed to climb up onto the bed, laying beside him without really knowing why. He could've just as easily slept on the floor by the baskets, but from the moment they'd met, Adrian had made him feel safe. Malachite almost knew that the man wouldn't be upset if he woke up and found him there.
He was startled when Adrian rolled over, and his eyes went wide when the arm that had accidentally hit him curled around his waist and tugged him close to the man's chest. Malachite blinked at him, but Adrian was still quite obviously asleep. He relaxed with a sigh, snuggling there against the warm body that held him, drifting off to sleep within moments.

Distribution of Journals "See? There's one for me, and one for you," Adrian explained, showing Malachite the two notebooks in his hands. They appeared similar, the covers of both books decorated in swirls of light blue and green, accentuated with glitter.
"Ohh," Malachite said, taking one of the books when his guardian held it out to him. He liked the way the cover shone when held in the light just right.
"You can write whatever you want to in it," Adrian continued, "I won't read it and no one else has to read it if you don't want them to. I'll write about you in my own notebook, okay?"
"Okay," the boy nodded, smiling softly.
It took a moment for the violet-haired guardian to find two spare pens, and he handed one over to Malachite. They sat together on Adrian's bed, opening the covers of the notebooks and pausing as they thought about what to write for their first entries...Adrian - July 29, 2005 Though I don't plan for you to read the things I write in this journal, I'm going to be writing to you, Malachite, my beautiful jewel. I was ecstatic when I was told I'd be able to take you home. You're the eighth member of my ever growing little family here at the mansion. I hope the others will grow to accept and love you through time. The older ones are skeptical now, but I think they can be convinced to get along with you.
Even in our first few days together, I've become fiercely protective of you. I was so worried that the strange little psycho-boy, Mekt, would hurt you that I swooped in and tried to carry you away. I want you to be able to meet other boys and to get along with him, but Mekt seems... dangerous. He's very odd in how he reacts to things, such as the way he hugged you. I worry about what he thinks of you.
I have high hopes for you, but above all, I want you to be happy. I won't stand in the way of anything you truely want to do, and I won't let anyone else stand in your way for as long as I can protect you. Never let anyone try to compromise what you believe to be right and wrong.
I think I've run out of sappy, philosophical things to write, so I'm going to put my pen down before I can embarass you or myself further. No, wait, I lied. I love you, sweetheart. Malachite - July 29, 2005 Today I met a boy named Mekt. He was very odd. Adrian called him disturbing. I'm not sure what to think of him. He seems to like me. He said he might bring me a present, which worries me. He tried to cut off Adrian's toe. Adrian got mad at him for it and threw his scalpel away. Mekt said he wouldn't slice things anymore. I hope he doesn't do it again. It was very scary at the shop, but Chegrin and Tristin were nice. The other boys were doing strange things and bleeding and screaming. It was all very scary and Adrian finally took me home.
Hana, Kaleb, and Cyrus don't pay much attention to me. Alfie likes me, though, and Haruki. Schye is still shy, but that's okay. I know what it's like to be shy. People looked at me and tried to get me to talk to them today at the shop, but I was scared. Adrian makes me feel safe, especially when he picks me up and takes me away from strange people.
There is very pretty music playing right now. Adrian says that it's a song called "Before the Dawn," but I can't say or spell the name of the band. He's trying to get me to sound the word out. Evansens? Oh, well.

Fishing Trip For a sunny, summer day, the temperature outside was quite cool, perhaps aided by the gentle breeze that swept across the land. Adrian hadn't done as much fishing in the summer months due to the heat, but decided that this would be a good day to take Malachite out on one of his fishing trips.
They headed down to Bass'ken Lake, Adrian carrying his fishing rod and tackle box, while Malachite padded along behind him, carrying a large bucket. They reached the dock and Adrian set his supplies down, taking the bucket from Mal's hands. "Whatever you do, don't get too close to the edge," he warned the green-haired boy as he sat on the edge of the dock, his legs dangling over the water. Malachite nodded, and Adrian went about setting up his hook.
The kiddlet walked quietly up and down the dock, peering over the side. The water appeared green with algae, and he could make out bugs on the surface, but very little else below.
He leaned down, trying to get a better look, and lost his balance, toppling into the water with a yelp.
"Oh, Jesus Christ, child," Adrian muttered, dropping his rod on the dock and reaching over to grab Malachite by the back of the shirt collar, hauling him back to safety.
The boy sputtered, choking on the water he'd inhaled. His hair was plastered to his face and Adrian brushed the locks out of the boy's eyes.
"I didn't tell you to stay away from the edge for my own health, you know," he snapped sternly, setting the boy beside him on the dock.
"I'm sorry," Malachite whimpered, looking cold, wet, and miserable. He sat where he was put, crossing his legs and bowing his head.
Adrian returned to his fishing and the two sat in silence for several minutes. Adrian couldn't get a single bite on the end of his hook.
He sighed, casting a glance at Malachite, who hadn't dared move. He reached up and gently pulled the boy's hair back behind his ears. "Don't look so upset," he said softly, with a hint of a smile, "you're scaring the fish."
Malachite sniffled, rubbing a hand across his face.
"You want to give it a try?" Adrian asked, holding the fishing rod out to him.
The boy shook his head, but his guardian persisted, placing it in Malachite's hands. He began to tell him about how to properly cast the rod, and how certain fish pulled more than others. Malachite brightened some under Adrian's tutelage, and they practiced casting for a little while.
At one point, the bobber jerked in one direction and Adrian said, "Reel it in! Easy now, not too fast."
Together, they managed to land Malachite's first catch, a yellow guppy.
"It's awfully small," Malachite said, wrinkling his nose as he watched it swim around in the bottom of the bucket.
"Guppies aren't usually very big," Adrian explained, "you'd need a better rod and more experience before you could land a bigger fish."
"Oh," the boy replied, still peering into the bucket. "What are we going to do with it?"
"Well, we can sell it over at the shack for a little bit of gold," his guardian said, jerking a thumb over his shoulder.
Aqua-colored eyes blinked up at him. "Then what'll they do with it?"
"Probably sell it to someone else," Adrian said, scratching his head. "Some people might buy them for food, but I don't think they'd make for very good eating."
Malachite looked like he'd been stricken. "They're... going to kill it?"
Oh, dear, Adrian thought, staring at Malachite and noticing the way the boy was trying valiantly not to cry. "Well... we could always let it go," he suggested quickly.
"But what if someone else catches it and they kill it?" Malachite squeaked in response.
"Then... it just happens," Adrian said, not finding anyway around the subject. "Everything has to die sometime. But at least if we let it go, now, it might have a little bit longer to live, right?"
The boy looked upset, turning to watch the fish in the bucket. The guppy swam around in circles, searching for a way out of its plastic prison. "Okay," Malachite said softly.
"Alright," Adrian said, picking up the bucket. "You want to help let him go?"
Malachite nodded, taking one side of the bucket in his hands. They poured the water and the guppy out over the side of the dock, back into the lake. The guppy swam off into the murky water, quickly disappearing with a wave of its tail.
"Good bye, fishie," Malachite said softly.
"Feel better?" Adrian asked, ruffling Malachite's hair.
The boy still looked sad, but nodded.
"I'm sorry this fishing trip was a flop," his guardian sighed, packing up his tackle box.
"It's okay," Malachite said, looking up at him. "It was fun catching the fish and letting it go."
"Well, I'm glad you enjoyed that part of it," Adrian half-smiled. "Let's get this stuff home and get you changed, then we can see what other kinds of trouble we can get ourselves into. Okay?"
"Okay," the boy agreed, smiling faintly and grabbing the bucket, following Adrian down the dock and toward home.

Playground Tumbles Not too far between the GCB mansion and Kanth's mansion, where Adrian and Malachite Karlet live, stands a playground of sorts for the children of the area to gather and play. There are several swing sets, including a separate tire-swing, as well as a jungle gym, and another large structure for climbing on with several slides. There are a few conveniently placed benches around the area for tired parents to sit and watch their children.
It's a beautiful summer day that doesn't deserve to be wasted indoors, so Adrian and Malachite have wandered down to the park. With a gentle nudge from his guardian, the green-haired boy walks over to the structure, climbing up it carefully and peering over the walls at Adrian. Adrian gives him a smile and a wave and Malachite smiles back, heading for one of the slides.Shielding his eyes from the sunlight, Nothing arrived at the park a short distance from his own humble abode, a relatively small place when put next to the number of mansions nearby, glancing over the playground. Darting ahead of him, Tristin was grinning broadly, looking about for what he would do first. Spotting another child already at the slides, Tristin decided on the jungle gym, climbing up the first few bars hastily. Chuckling at his child's energy, Nothing lowered his hand from over his eyes and wandered to a nearby bench, keeping an eye on Tristin as he pulled out a wide-brimmed hat, tugging it onto his head to block out the sun in his eyes. Hearing another child coming up behind him, Malachite glanced over his shoulder quickly before ducking into an enclosed tube-like slide, sliding to the bottom and hopping off, tripping a bit and falling on his hands and knees into the woodchips that lined the play area.
"Ouch," Adrian said with a cringe, starting to head in Mal's direction, "you okay?"
The boy nodded, getting up and brushing himself off. He'd know better for next time.
"Okay," Adrian changed directions, sitting down on the bench next to Nothing while Malachite skittered off to hide under the structure, peering at the blue haired boy through the small holes in the plastic-covered metal that made up the "floors" of the jungle gym. "It's a nice day out today," Adrian said to the man beside him, trying to make conversation.Grinning at the other child hiding under the floor of the structure as he flipped to hang upside down from the bars, Tristin waved quickly to him. Pulling himself back up quickly to sit on top of the bar he had been hanging from, he slid off to land on the ground, stumbling but catching himself before he fell. Nothing grimaced slightly as it looked like Tristin might fall over, smiling once he regained his footing. "Yeah, it's a pretty nice day. Bit too bright, though. Like it when there's a bit of cloud cover." Nothing chuckled as Tristin skittered over to the structure, peeking under the floor at the emerald-haired child, still grinning. "But the kids seem to like it. Mine pretty much dragged me out here." Malachite shyly blinked at the other boy who waved at him. As the boy made his way towards Malachite's hiding place, he ran out from under the structure and climbed up one of the ladders to the next level, putting himself above Tristin. The green-haired child giggled cutely, ready to duck down another slide if the boy climbed up after him.
Adrian nodded, keeping an eye on the two boys. "At least the breeze is a nice change," he said as the wind stirred his hair, "it's been too hot to go outside much, lately. I promised my boy, Malachite, that I'd bring him here when the weather was good."Tristin smirked as the other child climbed back on top of the structure, recognizing the need for a chase. He ran around the structure to the nearest way up, pulling himself onto the platform and ran after Malachite, giving the structure he was on another quick once-over for all the ways the child may flee. "Oh yeah, the weathers been quite hot, hasn't it? Tristin never seems to care though, he's been wanting me to take him all kinds of places recently. Think he just wants to get away from the family for a bit." Nothing chuckled softly, keeping an eye on Tristin to be sure he didn't get too into whatever game the kids may be playing. "Maybe needs a bit of a rest from everything that goes on around our house. Always a great bit happening around there." Malachite squeaked, heading back up to the top of the structure where the twisting tube slide was, ducking inside and holding himself in place in the turn, where the other boy couldn't see him. He waited quietly, listening to see if the boy would follow him down the slide.
"Mm," Adrian nodded again, "I know how that is. Malachite likes his siblings, but some of them don't return the sentiment." He shrugged, stretching and placing his hands on the back of his head, fingers lacing together. "I figured he and I needed some time together, anyway. At least here, he has a chance to meet some other kids."Smiling now, Tristin hopped up to the top of the structure, grabbing the plastic above the slide to swing himself into the tube, heading down it faster than if he had just hopped in. "Well, most of my kids get along well enough. Trist's kind of a mediator for the ones that don't. Thought there's not much that can keep one of my kids from trying to 'splode the more excitable one. " Nothing nodded slightly, trying to supress a yawn as he also strecthed, rubbing softly at his shouldersas he settled again. "Trist's just happy to meet new kids, it seems. And my hubby needed some time alone to work. Certainly hard to write when your kid's wanting to get out and bounce about." Adrian smiled at him. "I suppose it would be," he said, "I'm a fisherman, so I don't have that much of a problem. The kids usually stay home and I pray that the older ones look after their younger siblings." He looked up as he heard a commotion coming from the playground.
Crying out as he was kicked in the side, Malachite tumbled down the rest of the tube, toppling out and onto the ground, staring at the sky dazedly.
"Oh, dear," Adrian said with a wince, waiting to see if Malachite would pick himself up this time.Nothing smiled back at him. "Ah, a fisherman? Bet that's nice. Relaxing? Well, the kids about my house are all rather small, so we need someone around to watch after them.Though our resident lemur isn't too bad with them." Nothing chuckled, addressing the other resident of the house as such. He cut himself off as he heard the cry from inside the tube, watching as the two children tumbled out of it a moment later. "Oh, my..." Nothing rose from the bench just as Tristin pulled himself up again, looking down at the other child, kneeling down. "Hey, you okay? I'm sorry..." Tristin mumbled apologetically to Malachite. "I wouldn't say it's that relaxing," Adrian said dryly. "It's frustrating when most of your catch is just trash that people've thrown into the lake."
Malachite whimpered, his face crumpling in pain as the shock wore off. He rolled over, getting his knees under him and placing one hand on his head and the other on his ribs.
Adrian stood and made his way over to the boys, kneeling beside Malachite. "Let me see, babe," he commanded softly, lifting Mal's hand away from his head and gently touching the swollen bump there. He then did the same thing with the boy's other hand, lifting Malachite's shirt to check his stomach. "Just a few bruises," Adrian said, running his fingers over the boy's ribs, "nothing broken. You'll be okay." He gently ruffled Malachite's green hair.
Malachite whimpered softly, clinging to his guardian.
"Hey, now," Adrian hugged and released him, "go back to playing. He didn't mean it."
The boy nodded, staring at his feet. "I-... it's okay," he managed to say to Tristin quietly.Tristin watched as Adrian checked Malachite. He chuckled uneasily as he heard he was pretty much okay. "Again, I'm really sorry... I get worked up at times." Smiling slightly, he leaned down to look up into Malachite's eyes. "Are you feeling too bad? Can sit down, if you want to..." He nodded before straightening back up, still smiling. Nothing stood a short distance back as Adrian checked his kid over, chuckling softly when he heard he was fine. He stepped up behind Adrian quickly. "Heya bud, I'm sorry about that. He's used to playing with one of my other kids. A frightfully energetic one." Nodding, he looked over Malachite. "Don't think he'll be hurting too long, though. Shouldn't really take long for him to be feeling better." Malachite shook his head slowly. "No, I'm fine," he insisted, blinking at Tristin's eyes. They were an odd color, but not unpleasant to look at.
"Don't worry about it, you two," Adrian waved a hand dismissively, "he's fine. Kids get hurt all the time and bounce right back after it." He stood to his feet, giving Malachite a nudge. "Go play with your new friend, okay?"
Malachite blinked owlishly at him. "Okay..."
(( In progress... I think... ))

Discovery of Quartz Since Adrian still needed some way of bringing money into the family, he braved through the heat and went fishing on his own, since none of his kids were particularly fond of the activity. This often left the kids at home with the "big kids" in charge of looking after the little ones. None of them took this job very seriously, though Cyrus kept an eye on them from time to time, but the little'uns very rarely caused any trouble and didn't require constant attention.
Even though the big kids didn't watch them very closely, Malachite still respected their authority, shyly approaching Cyrus one afternoon. "Cyrus?" he asked quietly.
"Hmm?" the Chimaera blinked languidly at him.
"C-Could we," the boy hesitated, "go outside?"
Golden eyes blinked at him again and Cyrus gave a great yawn, revealing sharp white teeth. "I suppose so," he replied telepathically. "Did you have any place in mind?"
"N-No," Malachite said, peering out at him from behind his bangs, "not really. We could go exploring?" It sounded more like a question than a request or a suggestion.
Cyrus rose from his bed, stretching quickly before padding past the kiddlet, leaving the boy to follow along behind him. "Have you taken a sudden interest in the outdoors?" the Chimaera asked.
"No," Malachite replied as they climbed down the stairs, "I just thought it looked like a nice day... and I didn't want to have to stay inside."
Cyrus nodded, understanding that the boy was probably going stir crazy. Just because the rest of them were fairly lazy and stayed out of the sun didn't mean that the new boy was used to such habits, yet.
They made their way outside of the mansion, heading for the woods in the backyard. Cyrus journeyed outside often and had made a path into the woods himself. The ground was worn smooth from his paws and hooves, and the branches of the surrounding trees and shrubs had been gnawed away. He led Malachite down the path and into a clearing, another example of the Chimaera's handiwork, where the ground was bare and smooth in places.
The boy looked about in wonder, staring up at the trees and the large, smooth rocks that surrounded the clearing in a sort of semicircle. The sunlight that filtered in through the leaves cast patterns across the ground and on Malachite's face.
"What do you think of it?" Cyrus asked casually.
"It's nice," Malachite said shyly, "I like it here."
The chimaera nodded, moving towards one of the rocks. With a quick running start, he jumped up onto it, his back hooves making clomping noises against the stone. Malachite turned at the noise, watching his older "sibling" make his way up to a taller rock where the Chimaera sat and peered down at him. "Go ahead and explore, if you want," Cyrus said, "I'll keep an eye on you from here."
"Okay," Malachite replied, walking over to a lower rock and climbing on top of it. He proceeded to climb as many of the rocks as possible, slipping occasionally. Cyrus watched him carefully, incase the boy managed to hurt himself. Malachite had great fun jumping from rock to rock, but started to feel scared when he realized how far up from the ground he was.
He was about to jump down to the ground when he noticed another rock outside the semi-circle of stones that surrounded the clearing. He bounded over to it eagerly, circling it. "Cyrus! Come look'a this!" he called excitedly.
The Chimaera blinked lazily. He already knew what the boy had found, but he decided to be endearing, standing from his perch and raising his wings. He beat them quickly as he jumped, landing on the ground with a thump and trotting to the boy's side.
"Look!" Malachite squeaked, pointing to the break in the rock where several clear-colored crystals were easily seen.
"Mmm," Cyrus rumbled with a nod of his head, "it's quartz."
"Quartz?" the boy repeated, reaching out to touch the crystals. He managed to get a hold of one between his fingers and tugged at it. It loosened, along with some of the crystals surrounding it. Malachite looked surprised when the quartz crystals came out in one nice-sized chunk. "Pretty," he whispered, turning the chunk over in his hand. "Can I take it home with me?"
The Chimaera shrugged, "If you want. I don't think anyone will mind."
Malachite smiled happily and giggled, holding the crystals up to the light. "Can we find any more quartz nearby?"
"We could probably find some other stones if we looked hard enough," Cyrus replied neutrally.
"Can we?" Malachite squeaked excitedly.
Cyrus shrugged again. "Go ahead."
He hadn't expected the boy to start running off down the path. "Where are you going?" he asked casually.
"The driveway has all sorts of rocks!" Malachite called back over his shoulder. "There must be other crystals there!"
The Chimaera took his time walking out of the woods, doubtful that the boy would find anything too useful in their gravel driveway. But if the boy wanted to run around looking for rocks, then who was Cyrus to stop him?
Adrian returned home from fishing a short while later, his pole slung over his shoulder. He blinked, seeing his green-haired child hunched over in the driveway. As he stepped closer, he noticed that the boy's pants pockets were bulging. "What are you doing, sweetheart?" he asked, curious.
"Look, a crystal!" Malachite exclaimed, holding up one rock for Adrian to see, before bending over to grab another, "and here's another one! And another one!"
Adrian chuckled, shaking his head. "It takes a child to find beauty within a pile of gravel," he remarked, "but I hope all that beauty doesn't put a hole in your pocket."
The boy stopped in his search for a moment, blinking up at his guardian before remembering all of the "crystals" he'd put in his pockets. "Oh," he said, standing up. The weight in his pockets caused his pants to sag.
"Do you need to keep all of those crystals?" Adrian asked.
"Well, no," Malachite said, looking a bit upset, "but they're so pretty..."
"You can keep a few of them," his guardian said, smiling, "and you can put a few back for another kid to find someday."
"Okay," the boy agreed with a nod, grabbing the waistband of his pants and heading over to the front steps to sort out his collection while Adrian passed him, heading into the house. Malachite realized as he was sorting through the rocks that, though they looked similar, each piece was different in someway, be it the shape or the amount of a certain color in it. He saved the ones that shone the most, as well as the piece of quartz from the rock in the clearing. That one was especially important to him. He wanted to learn more about quartz, to try and discover how it had gotten there and if there was anyway that he could use it, other than as decoration. He also wondered if Adrian would mind if he made some sort of necklace out of it.
He gathered up the dozen or so rocks that he wanted to keep and headed inside, intent upon asking his guardian his questions as soon as he possibly could.
