Quote:
Caroline knocks on the door to Oqaia's wagon. She'd looked into Val's wagon already, but noted that it was already occupied. Her question was not so pressing as to disrupt a reading in progress. The pale pink parasol contrasts with Caroline's rich jewel-toned clothing as she twirls it nervously by the handle. What are you? she thinks at it. Ro had noticed something odd about the umbrella with black lace, and suggested in writing that Caroline bring it up with Val. Caroline herself can't tell anything strange about it, but Ro tended to have a sense about things like that. Of course, Ro herself had said she could be wrong. But perhaps it was better to be safe than not.

Oqaia was weary but awake when she answered the knock at the door. She'd been dragging through the books Valelldia had given her: did the gypsy trade ever end, or even ever make sense? She'd settle for a little clarity- just seeds of them, that possibly she could sow. But every time she thought she had an answer, more weeds cropped up, more complications. More magic.

"Caroline!" A bleary smile matched her eyes. "You've no idea how glad I am to see someone. Please, come in."

Caroline smiles. "Aye," she says, stepping into Oqaia's wagon. She twirls the parasol in her hands nervously. She looks around--she'd only really ever visited Valelldia before. She nods a little, tucking a strand of her mahogany hair behind her ear. Usually she isn't at a loss for words at all, but...it's hard to bring something like this up.
When she got Ro, she was given the bittie toy and told what it was and what it would do. But this? She was handed this ludicrous thing at random and now it turns up to be something else? She sighs. "Um...right. So...I've this parasol, aye? An' Ro thinks there's sommat off abou'it. I dinnae ken meself, but I think it's better safe 'n sorry, aye?"

"Off?" Oqaia shook her head, feeling somewhat dimwitted for the blunt repetition of the word. "I'm sorry. What about it seems off? Where did you get it?" It was a normal looking parasol, if not a bit... pink. ...And frilly.

"The hoopla at the Port," answers Caroline. "One of the priestesses gave it t'me to keep the sun off. She never took it back. I'unno, maybe Ro's havin' a bit much sun or sommat. But she does have an eye for birds....I was thinkin' it might be sommat for a Banya. But I was thinkin' that mayhap ye'd be able to find out more."

Oqaia staved off a yawn. Her eyes carried hefty, ugly bags beneath them. Those couldn't be staved off.

"May I see it, please?" She didn't quite know what she was to do with it when she had it, but figured that if there weren't any identifying marks, the least she could do was take it to Val.

"O'course," says Caroline, handing the flamboyant parasol over to her gypsy sister. "'S why I brought the bittie thing over here in the firs' place." She watches Oqaia. "Ye should get some sleep, sister," she comments. "Ye look a horrible sight."

Oqaia was about to nod and agree that she was a bundle of frayed, sleepless nerves, and to remark how ironic she'd always felt that it was perfectly innocent a thing for one woman to say to another... but never a man to a woman, when the parasol touched her fingers. Then she woke up quite a bit.

"Good lord, sister, it's a Fortunette." She blinked. "How did I know that?" She asked herself, Caroline, and no one. "Who did you say gave this to you?"

Caroline blinks several times before responding. "A...a priestess in Port Tempranillo," she repeats. A Fortunette! Mother Mary, another one? Then Oqaia's other comment reaches her ears. She smiles slightly. "Ye knew because you're Valelldia's kin, sister." She shakes her head. "Madre Mía...another child?"

"Half sister..." Oqaia said, mostly to herself, and very quietly, before turning the parasol over in her hands and handing it back to Caroline.

"Seems like you have another one. Quite a destiny you have, Caroline. ...Would you like a reading?"

"...Aye," she says slowly. "Aye, I think I would." She looks at the parasol and sighs. Who are you? she asks it. And why have ye chosen me?

Oqaia hesitated at the cabinet with the fortunetelling implements. She wasn't very good at the runes, yet. And sometimes the cards confused her. But they were the best bet. She took the cards, ancient and supple, that Valelldia had given her, and shuffled them. Then she lay three on the table before Caroline.

"The World. Family. The Lovers." She examined them for a moment, and how they fell onto the other, and then explained it to the gypsy mother.

"The world is your world, the caravan, family means that this child will need to know that it has lots of family waiting for it. And the Lovers just means touch. I think what will do it is to have four or five people to touch... the parasol at the same time, and for you to 'introduce' it to some of its future family."

Caroline lets the information soak into her for a while before nodding. "I'll....I'll be goin' t'do that now then, aye?" She looks at the ridiculously ornate thing in her hands. Another child...? She nods again. "Aye. Th-thank ye for yer time, sister." Caroline is still rather stunned by this discovery. She stands and moves to exit the wagon, nodding politely again at Oqaia before actually leaving.
She decides to take a walk with it. She thinks as she walks, and the more she thinks about it, the more she likes the idea of another child. A companion for Ro, and someone for her to nurture and teach. Caroline wanders back to the circle of wagons, the parasol now positioned jauntily over her shoulder.
She decides to seek out a small group of her gypsy family to help bring the Fortunette to life.

Caroline pokes her head into her wagon, looking for Ro. "Och, Ro!" she says. "I've a surprise for ye. Vaya conmigo."

Rojiza, curious, follows her mother out of the wagon. Mother has that outrageous parasol--she wonders what Valelldia had said about it.

Tamlin was sitting outside the wagon with Baptiste, doing the laundry. She had taken it upon herself to show this lone man the niceties of living in a clean wagon, and besides, as she was a guest it was only fair for her to help with the chores. As she handed the last of the now clean and wet clothing to Baptiste to hang up she saw Caroline walking near by carrying a surprisingly pink and frilly parasol. she wiped a few suds of her forehead as she stood up. "I'm gonna see what Caroline is going walk about for, care to come?" she asked Baptiste as she walked towards Caroline, her hand raised in a greeting.

Baptiste hangs up the last of the laundry on the lines strung between his wagon and an obliging nearby tree. He looks in the direction his companion was starting to disappear toward. He notes a swarthy young woman and a teenaged girl. And a frivolously ornate pink umbrella. "Alright, I'll come," he says to Tamlin's back as she walks away. He wipes his damp hands on his pants legs and follows her.

Caroline smiles and waves at Tamlin. "Och, I'm in need of some help," she says. She gives the parasol an experimental twirl. "This ridiculous thing is a Fortunette, it appears," she says. "I've just spoken w'Oqaia, and she says the thing t'do to aid its transformation is have several people touch it at once, and for me t'introduce it to members of its new family."
