A'ight. So, my mum has welcomed my current raging obsession with Doctor Who, and since we always go junk-store shopping and to Goodwill and places like that, she wants me to compile a list of the authors of the books so we can look out for 'um. If anyone has a list or any name of some authors it'd be much appreciated! ^^;

1st Doctor Authors:

2nd Doctor Authors:

3rd Doctor Authors:

4th Doctor Authors:

5th Doctor Authors:

6th Doctor Authors:

7th Doctor Authors:

I'm your man for this sort of question, but I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for, as most of the regular authors have written for a lot of the Doctors.

Would you like a list of who I think does each Doctor 'best'?

Why are you so shocked?!
PostPosted: Thu Nov 08, 2007 4:02 pm

Probably at how many there are.

The thing to remember is that during the nineties, when they were coming out at a rate of two or three a month, these novels were the ongoing series. smile

Well, I didn't realise how many there were either, actually! And like I said, I didn't include Target novelisations, or the book of the TV Movie, or the book of Scream Of The Shalka (which I discovered while doing this!).

I like to be thorough... biggrin

Right then, a quick list of authors who do each Doctor especially well.
This isn't a list of books that are best, as most of my favourites aren't on this list. It's also not a list of books that are most important to the continuity. It's just a list of those that do a particularly noteworthy job of characterising thier Doctor.

BillDoc:
The Plotters by Gareth Roberts perfectly captures the charm of the old 'comedy historical' stories like The Romans. For more straight-faced, but equally effective, Hartnell your best bet is The Witch-Hunters. That's got a great Susan in it too, as has Kim Newman's Time and Relative.

PatDoc:
Has proved a really difficult Doctor to capture in print. I think The Roundheads by Mark Gatiss is one of the few that's managed it.

JonDoc:
I'm not a big Pertwee fan, so might not be the best person to call this. I love Verdigris, but that's more for Iris and general literary hijinks than for the Doctor himself. People who are huge Pertwee fans always seem to go for The Last of the Gadarene by Mark Gatiss, but I've already nominated him once.

Oh, and Topping and Day do a great job on the whole UNIT cast in Devil Goblins from Neptune.

TomDoc
It's the Four/RomanaII/K-9 team that's really come alive in the books, especially in the trilogy by Gareth Roberts (The Romance of Crime/The English Way of Death/The Well-Mannered War) and the Festival of Death by Jonathan Morris which is easily the best ever novel for a Doctor who wasn't the 'current' one at the time of publication.

Jim Mortimore's Eye of Heaven is great for the earlier, harder, less-whimsical Fourth Doctor.

PeteDoc
Lance Parkin's Cold Fusion really captures him, all the more so by having the Seventh Doctor guest-staring for contrast.

ColDoc
Stick to the audios and the comics. That's where the real Sixth Doctor is.

SylvDoc
You're spoiled for choice as the New Adventures range which carried on where seasons 25&26 left off without dropping the beat were the golden age of ongoing Doctor Who prose. Anything by Paul Cornell, Kate Orman or Ben Aronovitch needs snapping up at once though.

PaulDoc
The Lance Parkin novels that begin and end his adventures (The Dying Days and The Gallfrey Chronicles) are great bookends, and in terms of Eighth Doctor characterisation then the novels co-written by Kate orman and Jon Blum are essential.

ChrisDoc & DaveDoc
Just stick to the show. The books are very much for a juvenile audience now and grossly unsatisfying for anyone over the age of ten. The Paul Magrs book is a little better than the others though, since as he's a proper Children's Author in one of his three other careers he knows what he's doing.

Evidently. smile I feel a bit silly for posting a "What exactly do you mean...?" quibble while you're coming though with post after post of hard fact.

While I was contributing to her guide to the audios (hidden away in the classic series subform) Roobarb has sort-of challenged me to do a guide to the different novel series for the guild, which I might put together at some point.

Ya, mostly shocked at all the books. xD -never knew there were that many-

It was a big moment when the number of novels surpased the number of television serials.

I think 'inclusionists' now have roughly 800 Doctor Who stories in thier canons. smile

You're welcome to the list and I hope you enjoy any of the books you get your hands on.

Wow....800 books.

Not quite. 800's the rough figure for the TV series, novels, audio plays and comic arcs all considered together. smile

Though it does seem to take a lot of shelves to hold my collection. sweatdrop
