About Me:

Name: Dean Scott
Age: 21
Birthday: January 29th
Hair: Dark brown, shoulder-length, and generally in a ponytail to keep it out of his way.
Eyes: Green.
Height: 6' even.
Build: Thin.
Occupation: Chef
Family: None.
Likes: Cooking, techno, video games, drawing, taking walks, nature, and swimming.
Dislikes: Crowds, rap, watching tv often, peas, and loud noises.
Personality: People think I'm often too shy and awkward, but it's just because I don't like getting close to people much these days. I can be really friendly and outgoing in the right circumstances and I'm a fiercely loyal person.

Short History: I had a fairly normal childhood. I was an only child, raised middle-class with my mother and father in the suburbs. I was always smart and did well on tests throughout my schooling, but I was also easily distracted. So much so that I rarely finished any homework. Due to this, I received mediocre grades in high school. A few days after I graduated from high school, my parents and I took a trip to visit the town my father grew up in. My parents never returned from that trip. On the drive home we were hit by a drunk driver. My parents died immediately and I had to be airlifted to a hospital. The incident left me alone with a nasty reminder; a scar over my right eye. Prosthetic eyes creep me out, so I just wear a patch...

My parents had life insurance... enough to sustain me a while and get me through college. For their sakes, I focused heavily on my schooling and finished my courses in culinary arts. I got myself a decent entry-level job cooking and that's pretty much where I am today.

My Hacker:

Name: Zest
Gender: Female
Type: Dessert
Stage: Child

Personality: Zest definitely has what they call "spunk." She's often overly enthusiastic and she's very optimistic as well. It sort of cancels my pessimism a bit around here. I've noticed here and there that she can be very crafty as well. Sweet and cute just about sums it up.

Friends: Me so far.

My Computer:

My laptop pretty much has my life on it. I use it to store my music and, more importantly, my recipes. It's not an overly powerful machine and it only has a 12" screen, but for my purposes it's perfect. It's a Powerbook G4, which is an Apple computer. Even being a couple years old, it's still not outdated. Aside from using it for music and recipes, I often play World of Warcraft on it as well.

Memories:

The Last Place On Earth
(finished) I met two men at the local coffee shop. It's a nice place and I hope to see them again.

Glitchy Business

I don't usually keep a blog, but strange things have been happening lately that are worthy of being recorded...

So, earlier today I decided that I wanted to bake some pistachio bread. I wanted to do this out of boredom and because that bread is one of the most delicious substances known to humans. Heh. It's also a secret family recipe. In any event, I keep all of my recipes on my Macintosh Powerbook G4 laptop. It's fairly old, but it was top of the line when I bought it so it's still a very functional and practical machine. Or, so I thought. When I went to retrieve the recipe from my cooking folder, I noticed that it was missing, along with a few other choice recipes. This being my favorite recipe, one can imagine how upset this made me. Of course, I calmed down after a short freak-out and wrote the recipe down onto a piece of paper from memory. I tried baking the bread and it came out perfectly. Apparently, I had that one memorized. What concerns me now is the loss of a few recipes that I wasn't too familiar with.

In addition to this, a strange yellow-ish icon has appeared on my desktop. It doesn't do anything when I click it. I thought it might be a virus, which would be strange because Apple computers rarely get viruses. That is, after all, one of the perks of owning a Mac. I know my way around a computer fairly well (especially a Mac). Even so, I couldn't figure this icon out to save my life. So, I waited for work...

At work tonight, I spoke with one of the prep cooks, Jacob. Jacob, as I understand, is "The Browser." Aptly named for his habit of sitting at the computer ALL DAY and just browsing over information he finds on the Internet. It really shows, too. He knows a little bit about everything. In that way, he's sort of a "Jack-of-all-Trades." Back to the point, he had heard of symptoms similar to what was happening to my Mac. He told me that he would recheck the forum he'd gotten the information from and call me later. And, in fact, not five minutes ago he was at my door, handing me the address to some kind of shop, scrawled on a napkin from work. I thanked him and he was on his way. He seemed pleased. Perhaps it was good that I forced him to get out of the house for something other than work. lol

So, I'm decided. I've invested too much time into this computer to just buy a new one and transfer my files. Even if I did that, they may be corrupted by whatever's on my laptop. The only choice I have is to check out this address tomorrow and see if this place can fix things for me. Hopefully it doesn't take too long, since I have work tomorrow night.

How Far I've Come

While my grades were never phenomenal in high school, I was always a brilliant young man. I admit that I was pretty shy, though. It was hard for me to make friends, but when I did make friends I was really able to open up. Getting my first high school job really helped me to open up and be more outgoing. By senior year, I wasn't exactly popular, but people knew my name and I really didn't have any enemies. I was friendly and people never seemed to mind my presence at all. For the first time in my life, I was somebody others liked to be around.

Then the accident happened. I was close with my parents, unlike a great deal of people in high school. I had no siblings and most of my relatives lived across the country, so my parents were the only family I felt a great deal of love toward. Losing them was the worst thing to happen to me. I suppose I was legally an adult, but I was also fresh out of high school. It's hard enough to deal with the pain and suffering in your heart at the loss of your loved ones. On top of that, I had to deal with their will and transferring funds, and paying off their house, and selling it, and setting up a college fund, and the list goes on and on. My eighteenth year was the most difficult of my life and it ruined all of the progress I'd been making socially.

I finished culinary school rather quickly and jumped right in. I make decent money, even though I'm at the bottom of the chefs at the restaurant. I do, however, know a lot about cooking. I feel that I've come so very far with my career, given my age. Unfortunately, I forgot how to interact properly with humans. I never wanted to get close to anybody again. I never wanted to feel the pain of losing a loved one again.

And so, I stopped making friends. After high school, I lost contact with my old friends as well. Basically, I sat at home alone, baking and playing video games. I was around people at work, but not the public. The other chefs all look down on me, even today. I don't speak with them much. I talk to the prep cook, Jacob, sometimes. He's more socially introverted than I am, though. I dunno. I want to make friends again, but... the truth is:

I'm just too damn scared.
