Part 2: The Close Edge

Kilo and his friends walked for hours in the sea of trees. Kilo looked into sky and through the branches he saw the sun directly above them. He sighed and looked back down into the forest. “Gahhh… I hate this forest…” He said slightly frustrated. Serene and Lucian remained silent and Sonia gave a small sigh.

Thirty minutes later Serene started to look around franticly, Lucian turned to her and said, “Are there enemies around?” “No…. I think we’re almost out of the forest.” She said a little excited. Kilo glanced away and for a split second he thought he saw a clearing. But before he could ponder this, a blur came into his view. It was Serene running the direction he was looking, Kilo ran after her. Lucian and Sonia looked at each other and then followed behind.

“Serene! Stop! There are…!” Put it was too late and Serene disappeared from his view. Kilo dive down right by where Serene disappeared and saw the edge he’d foresaw, a cliff. He looked down the edge and saw Serene the holding on to a rock with one hand and looking down. She looked up at Kilo, and He noticed that her face was very pale and full of fear, but Kilo reached down and grabbed her hand. “…Cliffs.” Kilo said slightly relieved. Serene grabbed onto Kilo’s arm with he other hand and held for dear life. Lucian reached down next to Kilo and grabbed her other arm. Together the men pulled Serene up from the edge.

Serene jumped away from the cliff as soon as she got footing and landed on the ground. Then she got up on her hands and knees and breathed heavily. Kilo and Lucian both looked at Serene, then each other, then down the edge. It was about 20 yards to the bottom. The two just kept silent as Sonia sat up next to Serene and pulled out a goat skin. “Please, have some water.” She said it a low, caring voice. Serene slowly took the goat skin and slowly drank a little bit of water. She held it back to her and sighed. Kilo smiled as he often admired Sonia always caring for every one like a mother. Except Lucian of course, He never let anyone take are of him as long and he could prevent it.

Kilo looked over at Lucian and noticed that he was looking down the cliff. He looked beyond the edge and saw there where more trees but it ended about a half a mile, and hopefully civilization. “Kilo…” A voice said breaking Kilos thoughts. It was Lucian pointing south along the cliff, “See there… There’s an odd formation in the cliff side.” He said. Kilo looked to where he was pointing and saw an opening. Was it a window? Or something to ventilate an building? All he could tell that it wasn’t natural.

Kilo looked back to the two girls and saw that Serene seemed to have gotten over the incident. “Ready to continue?” He said mainly to Serene. Serene, who was sitting up, looked over and him, “Yeah, I’m ready.” She said. “Then hand me your ropes everyone.” Kilo said standing up and holding out his hand. Lucian and Sonia pulled theirs out promptly but Serene started looking in all directions. “Ohhhh, Oh no… I think my pack fell off…” She said shamefully. “Three ropes should be enough.” Lucian said squinting at her. Serene sighed.

After Kilo finished the rope he tied it to a nearby tree. Then he threw the line down the side of the cliff. “Alright Lucian.” Kilo said. “I’ll go down first and you watch the line. If it breaks catch it for me.” “Hurry up and go…” Lucian replied. Kilo gave a blank stare, “Thant’s comforting.” He said. Then he leaned over the cliff giving tension to the rope and then jumped off. Lucian looked over at the two girls who faces where pure white after Kilos stunt. Lucian turned away and returned his view to the rope which was holding. He grinned and waited.

Kilo trudged down the rope, sometimes with bounds and sometimes slowly. He looked over to this side at the odd formation and he though he saw a face. But it quickly dissaped. Kilo wasn’t exactly sure of what he saw but desided that he shouldn’t worry about it… yet. As soon as he reached the bottom he yelled up. “Hey! I’m down and it’s all clear!” after a second he saw a face appear over the cliff and wave once. Kilo smiled and then turned around to lean against a large rock in the cliff.

Serene was the next to move down the rope and then Lucian came down carrying Sonia who was not very strong. As soon as Lucian put Sonia down Kilo noticed that Serene was missing. “Did she go looking for her pack?” Sonia asked. “Most likely.” Kilo replied. Then the three heard rustling in a nearby bush. They turned and watched carefully as Serene popped out. “hey guys,” She said quickly. “sorry abut that but hurry and follow me.” She said signing the rest to follow.

After some distance the group moved into a newly cleared area with the tree stumps freshly cut. The strong sent of sap filled the air. “what happened here?” Sonia asked. “These trees are freshly cut. There must be a town nearby…” Lucian stated. Serene was shivering with excitement, “Let’s hurry and get there! I’m tied of felling dirty. …This can’t be good for my skin…” “A nice hot bath sound nice…” Sonia said dreamily. “then why are you standing around talking about it…?” Lucian said. “You two do too much needless talk-.” SMACK! Sonia hit Lucian across the face. Lucian held his hand up to where she hit him and said angerly, “Woman, why did-.” SMACK! Sonia slapped him on the other side. “Lucian…” Kilo said picking his words carefully. “drop it for now…” He said with a hint of fear in his voice. Lucian nodded in agreement for once and said no more.

By now the sky become orange in twilight and the shadow of buildings appeared in the near distance. They marched onward in the hopes of a good nights sleep.

A little bio about Serene

Her full name is Serene Lifestream. She is 17 years old and a skilled archer and spell caster. She’s a very energetic and often acts first. She has know fighting from a very early age and has much experience. Serene is very emotional too and sometimes bursts whenever pressured a lot.

Born in a framing town she was expected to be like a normal girl. But Serene felt that her gray hair and eyes prevented her to be normal. So, one day, she took up archery. This soon became her passion and gained her much praise. Eventually she joined a small military group and a year later joined Kilo.

Now 17 Serene is an invaluable asset and friend to Kilo and the rest of the BrightGlem mercenaries. Providing a unique form of archery that fused arrows with magic.
