I'm going to tie this in with abortion a bit, but basically what I want to discuss here are people's feelings on the Youth Criminal Justice Act. This is a Canadian thing, I'm aware but I think it ties in a bit with American legalities as well. Also y'all can debate about Canadian stuff too!
Basically the Youth Criminal Justice Act does a couple things, the names of the accused can not be divulged, in order to protect them, and the recieve much lighter sentancing, are the basics.
Now the abortion tie in is this article; Quote: WINNIPEG - A pregnant woman was brutally beaten to death and buried in a snowbank because she refused to have an abortion, the Winnipeg Free Press has learned. The motive behind the February killing has emerged for the first time, now that a 17-year-old man has cut a deal with Manitoba justice officials to plead guilty to first-degree murder. “Those are the facts we will be advancing,” Crown attorney Brent Davidson said Wednesday, adding it’s one of the more disturbing cases his office has seen. The teen - who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act - will not be sent to adult court, where he would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. Instead, he will appear in provincial court Tuesday and receive the maximum Youth Criminal Justice Act sentence of 10 years. I would just like to point out, as well that even if this guy gets sentenced to the max, he will only have to serve 6 of those 10 years, in jail.
Also, just so no one says it, because I might have to smack someone if they do; this happening is not a "see what will happen if they outlaw abortion!" moment. Abortion is completely legal, and this woman CHOSE to carry this child and she was beaten to death because of it. Legal abortion helped her in no way.

That is messed up. He killed someone (two people if you count the fetus), he doesn't deserve a deal.
If he's not going to get the death penalty at least lock him up for life. He killed someone out of cold blood.
He should be tried as an adult. Not only is his close to becoming an legal adult but he knew what he was doing obviously.
As for the woman, it was her choice to have the baby, what happened to letting people choose?

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act they can only be sentenced to 10 years, only 6 of which can be spent in jail.
Also Canada doesn't have the death penalty.

I take it, since he killed this woman for not having an abortion, he was the biological sire (I just can't say "father" because that is NOT how a father acts)? Sick.
In the US, we often try teens who commit murder as adults. In cases such as this, it is too bad that you can't do so in Canada. That is not a long enough prison sentence for someone who killed. If he killed over a reason such as that, then he is mentally unstable and a potential danger to others.
I don't suppose there is anyway he could be found mentally deranged and locked in a mental institute for the criminally insane?

You can be tried as an adult, in Canada, if you commit murder, but only if you're over the age of 13 (ie. 14 or above) you also cannot be charged if you're under the age of 12. I'm not really sure WHY he wasn't tried as an adult, it doesn't say why in the article, but I think it takes many different factors, beyond it being murder. Such as intent, forethought etc. I don't know the exact things needed for him to be tried as an adult though, it's all very strange.
That said, however there are also cases like Jasmine Richardson who are too young to be tried as an adult, and who really should be. Even though this girl drew pictures of lighting her family on fire, and asked her 23 year old boyfriend to kill them (though she stabbed her 8 year old brother), and talked about killing her family to her friends (when one friend laughed she actually said "You don't believe me, but I'm going to do it." or something to that effect). She cannot be tried as an adult, because she was 12 when the murders took place.

Perhaps, because (it sounds like) he gave evidence on the two adults also changed, he got to be tried as a minor?
