What's your best way to get through a day's quota of words? What tricks do you use to fill out the count with meaningless words? What strategies do you use to get lotsa words in?

Share them with the rest of us!

As to kick it off, I've invented a character that talks a lot. You know, one of those annoying characters that won't stop talking. "Lise" appeared yesterday out of thin air and chatted my character up--and I let the conversation roll. You get a lot of words from someone, who, when they hear the word "cake", they can do this:

"Cake? I love cake! Chocolate is my favorite! What do you like? I don't really care for a lot of frosting. It has to be an equal amount. Are you like that too? I also like cookies. Peanut butter. Yes. Oh, and weird as I am, I like putting whipped-cream on them. It's great, really. I once spilled some on my favorite pair of shoes! Oh, by the way, do you like these shoes I'm waring now? They're totally designers! I got them at the mall at this super cute store! Oh! I must show you! Come on!"

...And thus, 75 words out of every paragraph, and possible distractions for you MC.

It's good to give your character a stutter. Make the word long enough that it still counts, and do it like this...

"I ca- ca- can't belie- lie- lieve this is ha- happening..."

Each sylable counts as a word. xD

And it's good to randomly go into dream squences that have no meaning whatsoever.

Most of my characters don't talk very much, but they are quite introspective. So my narrative is littered with long, involved thought processes.
Also, I write a lot of violent fight scenes with detailed, gory description. xd It's fun and it racks up my word count!

I loved you once...
...but you left me for another...

Flashbacks. I'm at the point of introducing characters and explaining their pasts work for me as flashbacks that always are long for me.

How can I find my way past the darkness...
...and into the light?

I write a lot. Because my ultimate goal is to get this story published, I can't fill it with crap just to meet my word count. So I end up spending 8 to 10 hours a day writing. Okay, 8 to 10 hours on the computer. A couple of those hours is spent answering my fanmail. But 8 to 10 hours is nothing for me -- I'm a writer, it's what I'd be doing even if it wasn't NaNoWriMo.

NaNo just gives me an excuse not to answer the phone or the door ^_^

As proud as I am of the word count I am racking up (I'm over halfway to the amount at which I quit last year), forcing myself to just write even if it's bad, and not allowing myself to edit, is SO PAINFUL crying
I need to insert another fight scene soon, or I'll start crying for real gonk

I have unnecessary events that don't effect the story like waking and sleeping for certain characters. I have them so the story flows more smoothly instead of going from scene to scene. It also adds words to the count while leaving time to think about what event to write about next even if it is just a short paragraph or so.

I didn't have any dirty tricks in the beginning because I was doing so well, but now I keep my inner editor's comments :/ I'm not proud of doing that since I wanted to make this a rlyrly good story, but right now I'm at a point where I don't even want to write my own story, so anything that can help me is good. I'll fix everything up post-production; right now, I'm just focusing on forcing myself to write and the wordcount.

I describe every minor event in two paragraphs of detail.
He didn't just wake up in the morning, he slowly opened his eyes to the dull grey fog of a day after rain.
:'D

And... sometimes I break away from the story and go into monologues about evolution, or the purpose of tails, or why it didn't bother my MC that there was a big, dead blue thing right in front of him.
I take it as my right to have monologues in there, because I don't have any dialogue at all. surprised

I finally found a strategy that works for me! :'D

If I'm ever desperate for words, I utter this open-ended phrase: "That's when all Hell broke loose." It can mean so many things, and it usually takes several paragraphs to explain what happened xD I love it.

My strategy is to not care of what I'm writing and let it write itself, even if it is irrelevant. I'm not writing to get published is a good thing. I know I have good stuff it might seem long to read though because I get off topic often. Heck how should I know though, I don't read my story, or I'd of abandoned a long time ago... or not, I don't know

I've got quite a similar approach, but I have a lot of dialogue.

I take it as right to write random monologues for the sake that I'm writing for words, and if someday I read it all over I might think the random monologues have a reason.

I think I would have more words if my descriptions were so much more real. I can't help but to write choppy and then I'm showing not living.
