Alright, I've been trying for months to get this technique down, and I can't get it, I have this one exercise I've been doing other than that, nothing... advice?
Exercise: E-----------------8-12--------------- B-------------10-------10----------- G----------11-------------11-------- D-------10------------------10------ A-8-12 -------------------------12 8 E-------------------------------------
One more thing before I go... I've watched many guitar players perform this, in video's and in real life, it really doesn't help that much : / .

hokay. I can sweep, but I don't do it profusely. I'm not big on it, so I don't practice it as much as I could but I know how to tackle this and any other sweep you want to learn:
Note before you start: The cleaner your tone, the more you can hear the mistakes you are making. Play clean. This will make your sound articulate and glorious when you're playing with full on distorted tone.
1- Get a METRONOME. This isn't as important now as it is when you're familiar with the lick. 2 - Get familiar with the lick. Start by doing the first four notes of it again and again. when you have those down pat at a SLOW tempo, put the fifth one in, and then get the sixth one in and so on. Eventually build up to the entire lick at a slow tempo 3 - Turn the metronome on and tap the tempo you were using. Start practicing to it and as you get so that you can play the lick 5 times perfectly at that tempo, turn the thing up another 4-10 bpm. 4 - build up your speed. Doing any lick this way gives you no limits as to what you can accomplish if you practice all the time.
If you're having trouble at a slow tempo, kill the metronome for a bit until you get familiar with the sweep. Again I emphasize: Start slow, get the notes right and clear. If you don't you're not going to sound like you know what you're doing next time you play in front of someone.

Yeah... I've been doing most of that, but I can't get any faster than like... 2/4 time. It's perfectly clear at that time signature, but at 4/4 it's unclear and runny... it confuses the hell out of me : /

sounds like your not practicing it right .
your should be getting better cause the only way you couldnt is cause your just not sweeping the right way with your picking hand . Be smooth with it !!! and make sure your fingering hand if working with it too !!! hammer on !!! and just keep at it ^_^

It sounds like you're not using a metronome right. Go to www.metronomeonline.com and check out some of the metronome basics you can learn. Also, keep in mind that fast playing is akin to running and slow playing is like walking. You have similar motions, but you're really not doing exactly the same thing right?

Um, I'm basically doing the exact same thing, except when I do it slowly I push my hand down with my forearm, and when I sweep i curve my wrist to strum.

That sweep pattern seems kind of akward to me. I know some ways of sweeping that I can tell you. You should just start out slow and speed up with practice. Make sure to keep your notes at a steady rhythm. Here are some easy ones. You can start at any fret with these. This is just how I prefer to do them.
Normal sweep pattern: E----------------13--17--13-------------- B------------15------------15------------- G---------14------------------14---------- D-----15-------------------------15------- A-17---------------------------------17--- E-------------------------------------------
A fun one I made up: (requires right hand tapping) E----------------5--6--13--5--13----------- B-------------6---------------------6-------- G---------7----------------------------7----- D-----5-----------------------------------5-- A--------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------
Those are just the two that I usually do when I feel like daddling and doing something fun. They're simple to work around with. Just remember to just "sweep" your pick across each string it involves. It creates that legato sound. And if they seem to sound strange, try using your RHYTHM pickup on a lead guitar setting. Hope that helps.

Yep... I'm trying to get the crew to make a section devoted to licks and exercises to build speed/accuracy/etc.

the one i used to practise was E----------------14-h17p-14------------------ B------------15----------------15-------------- G---------14----------------------14------------ D-----16-----------------------------16-------- A-17-------------------------------------17---- E-----------------------------------------------
or to make it easier E----------------14-h17p-14----------------- B------------15---------------15--------------- G---------16----------------------16----------- D---------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------- E----------------------------------------------

Regarding the Subforum:
I totally support the idea of a "Licks and Exercises" subforum, but as a crew member I realize that, unfortunately, we need someone who's a little higher than Crew status to get a subforum going. Captains or Vice-captains are the only people who can actually start a subforum. It would be possible however to create a new guild dedicated to guitarist technique, but I haven't even checked to see if that already exists or not.

Yeah, well I'd rather stick within this guild, I've sent mail but no one answers, so we might have to start a new guild...I call captain biggrin Anyone wanna start donating? If I wasn't questing for a few items I'd buy a guild right now...
