I'm extremely bored right now and my playlist is getting old, so my mind was wandering and came upon the topic of.. 'Elven Music' exactly what would you call Elven Music? What would qualify? Is it classical? Flute? Whimsy? I'm guessing it floats around that particular sound. However are there any actual writings on what kind of music Elves listen to (from Tolkien or such)?
I find that seeking my answers from here would produce some results... If anybody can help please post surprised if this is a repeat thread, please tell me where I can find what I'm looking for here! smile
And also just a question on the side, what kind of music do you listen to?

Ya know, I do imagine some elven music to be made up of flutes. I heart their sound and how much emotion you can carry with instrument......I play the flute too, lol. biggrin

I know it's said somewhere in the books the kind of music that the Elves have. There's flutes and harps for sure. I've always imagined Elven music to be of the Celtic variety with some Oriental influence. ^.^ Actually right now I'm listening to a Celtic Mysteries cd and feel very Elvish. xd
The kind of music I usually listen to is, well. . .more or less anything. Except for country. . . and most pop. I love Industrial music, hard techno, punk, metal, rock. Lot's of aggressive stuff actually. But my Celtic roots always call me back. ^.^ I adore Celtic music, anything Irish, lot's of Japanese (new and classical - I love Taiko).

Well, just grab the three LOTR soundtracks and listen to the Elvish tracks.... that will give you an idea of the sound you're looking for, aside from being elven in nature to start with. whee
Yeah, Sels is right, very Celtic in nature. I recall on the LOTR EE DVD features that the Elven culture is very Celtic, from music to architecture to clothing. At least it was interpreted that way by the film makers. Also I think in one of the appendices at the end of Return of the King, there's mention of the Elvish language being a "predecesor" (geez, pretty sure I murdered that spelling) of the Celtic/Welsh language, if you're following the mythology idea (the language of Rohan corresponding to Old English, Dwarvish I believe corresponding with Germanic or Slavic languages(?) or something like that). I know that Tolkien relied on Celtic and Welsh languages when developing Elvish - being a linguist I supposed he'd know how to do that.
But I digress. sweatdrop

Aoife Ni Fhearraigh has some music that I would consider Elvish too, it's traditional Celtic.

On the FOTR soundtrack, it's part of "The Council of Elrond," track 10 I believe. I'm a geek. Oh, also, there's a group called Ceredwin (not sure on the spelling) that I have a CD of. The one I have is Celtic legends, but it's all sung in Welsh and there are a couple instrumental tracks that could be very Elvish indeed.

Well, I'd also sugest Celtic or Japanese music.
If you can, try and find the sound tracks to more recent Zelda games, that may be what you're looking for.

But if you listen to some of her other stuff like "Athair Ar Neamh" or "Wild Child" you really thing 'wow this is sorta elvish' (if you like elves if you don't then i'm not quite sure what you think wink ) And she also wrote a song called "Lothlorien" on her cd Paint the Sky with Stars, I believe, that's soo pretty. It's truely Lothlorien and really has an Elven quality to it. (yeah yeah lorien i know..)
