Hello. I just joined the guild and I am looking for a tutor. ~~~ I have Role Played before but it has been a while, and at that it wasn't very literate at all. I can spell fairly good and if I can't spell something I try to spell check it (or something to that matter). I also try to look for typos, I make alot, but I try to check my post and make sure I havn't made any.. although once in a while I let one slip by accident. ~~~ I don't really know what Role Playing type you might concider mine.. I don't like much to do with violence, magic, romance, or school (the main reason behind the school, is because I am homeschooled, and I wouldn't know what the heck a good half of the people would be talking about, lol). ~~~ However by looking at some other Role Plays (not in this guild though) I have learned, no smileys ( eek ), no chat speak (omg), and if you talk out of character in a role play, use (these). (I was just showing examples.) ~~~ Thank you very much, ~Eliza Rose.

Err, let's continue the lessons in here. Eliza Rose 1) I role play because it is a fun way for me to pass time. (I have no bros or sisters my age, and theres really nothing else to do around my house besides internet. >-<) 2) IC = In Character, OOC = Out Of Character, God-Modding = "[blah blah blah] Eliza Rose shoots Illarion and Illarion falls down to the ground, dead." Bad example.. but thats what I tought it was.., Mary Sue = I used to know.. but I have forgotten.., character skeleton = I don't know, profile = a place where you fill out your characters name, dislikes, likes, skills, ect? Closed RP = The RP isn't availible yet? Open RP = It is availible? Accepting RP = Fill out a forum/(possibly profile, if I am correct) to get accepted (or rejected) for a RP? ToS= Terms of Service. and WB = Welcome Back? >-< Some of those are probibly wrong.. some I guessed, some I knew.. but there you go. 3) Well for the RP I am planning on making, it is this girl (probibly me) who lost her parents when she was little, and sence then she hasn't talked, and she is on this island, doesn't know if the world exists, spends time at the library.. im rambling about stuff you don't need to know.. xD lol In anyway... I really havn't a foggiest of what kind. I dont like magic because it is aginst my religion. I am not one to fight. As I said school, I would be insanely lost. And I don't really care much for vampires zombie type things, I will watch them in movies but in my point of veiw I find it kind of pointless. 1) Heh, I'm the same way. College gives you way too much free time. I also have another reason, though: I want to constantly improve myself, especially when it comes to writing. I'm pretty decent with written words, but sometimes I don't have the motivation to write a whole story. Thus, when other people are writing the story with you, you never know what'll happen. 2) Pretty good job. I'll talk a little more about God-modding and Mary-Sues in a little bit, but a Mary-Sue is someone who is good at everything AND popular AND successful. She's very one-dimensonal, she wrecks the story, she only makes others envious, and she's the non-battling equivalent to God-modding. The male version is called a "Gary-Stu." A character skeleton is basically a blank profile. It shows applicants what they need to include and the format in which to submit it. The profile, of course, is the completed version. Often, the title of an RP will contain things like ((Open)), ((Closed)), or ((Accepting)). Closed means that an RP isn't ready to start yet (usually the creator is still setting it up, or it doesn't have enough characters yet). Open is the opposite; the players are ready to start posting. Accepting means you can still submit a profile; often, an RP will be open and running, but it will still welcome new players. Oh, and WB can also mean "writer's block". Sometimes, a person will say ((OoC: WB)) along with a short entry; this means they're stuck and may edit the post later. If you're ever blocked, just relax and take a quick break; if someone else is blocked, it might help to give them prompts and ideas to get them going again. Being friendly during an RP definitely helps. wink 3) You're wrong about that--I'd love to hear about your RP. Of course, starting one's own RP takes a ton of effort and knowledge, and even I haven't started one yet (one in the works, though smile ) It's best to get the basics down first. I've done magic ones before, but my religion is the same on it. I haven't done one for quite a while now, but the principles behind it are good to learn. I don't care much for zombie ones, either, and vampire RPs are overdone. Fighting, like magic, is good to learn if only to understand it. I'd bet you'd like school ones, slice-of-life stories, and sociopolitical RPs if you got a good introduction to them. For now, let's keep working.

Yep! Read the above post. mrgreen
Tell me when you've looked through it, and if you have any more questions or comments before we proceed, fire away.
Edit: by the way, sometimes people take a long time to write, or they may edit their posts later. It's fairly common to miss information that other people post, so don't worry too much about that yet.

Heh, all right. If at any time you have a question, don't hesitate to ask.
We've both mentioned that an RP should be written and read like a story, and that one of the main reasons people RP is to create a well-written story. That's half of the spirit of RPing.
The other half involves letting go. After all, the whole point of an RP is that you're not the only one writing it. Sometimes, you will have a plot in your mind, but other people will do things that completely throw you off guard and even prevent your own plot from proceeding. What you need to learn is to improvise.
Improvisation means that you completely accept whatever other people do. Given, you should only accept things that are within reason; anything resembling God-modding should be reported to the moderator of that particular story. In improv comedy, you COULD reject what someone else says and come up with a perfectly good joke of your own, but it will be neither funny nor good sportsmanship. In RPing, it'll ruin the story and make other players dislike you. So, try to work off of what others do.
One thing you should be careful of avoiding is playing with only one other person. This usually limits what others can do, and sometimes they'll quit in frustration. Always allow a path into your conversation, just in case. If you catch someone else doing it, try to work your character into the mix; if they still ignore you, contact the GM.
The concept of improvisation is what gets most God-modders in trouble. They impose their will upon others and leave no option for input or reaction. Say I fire a gun at you. Now, I have full control of aiming the gun and pulling the trigger, but after the bullet leaves the barrel I can't control its trajectory, let alone your reaction. The same thing with punches: I can aim the punch and throw it, but how you respond to it and whether or not it hits is up to the other person. Of course, nobody likes a character who dodges everything, either. Both matters boil down to the God-modder wanting to impose his will, his plot, into the story without letting the other person have a say in the matter.

((Figured I'd let you read part of it while finishing what I have to say. razz ))
Of course, this doesn't apply stricty to fighting. You can only control your character, no matter what. You can TRY to seduce someone, or you can doll yourself up so that you look beautiful to yourself, but what happens up to that is up to the other person. This brings up a whole bunch of problems, especially when it comes to appearances. My vampire may be 400 but have healthy skin and a fit body, but I can't claim to "look 21" if not everybody perceives me that way. Moreover, I could have a thin body with a large bosom and rear, but if someone's character belongs to a culture that values thick women (Latina, Arabic, some African tribes, etc.), they won't be impressed--they might even pity me!
So, remember at all times that you can only control so much. How other people perceive, act, and react aren't yours to control.

Yes, sometimes I think that is a little bit hard for us all because of what you said about its a toss up between what you want or what the other character wants.
Per se, you did shoot me in a role play, I oviously (99% chance..) I do not want to die.. but you want me to (well.. this is a example :P) die. Even though at times it is hard to go aginst stuff like that sometimes you don't do either.. I do not mean not respond to the role play, oviously you have to.. but like in that example, you could have been shot, but not dead.. neither of you get completely what you want.. but atleast its not exactly god-modding.
But yes, I see your point exactly.

Now, you'll probably want to learn how to pick out a good RP. You don't seem to know what you like quite yet, so a lot of trial and error will be key. However, there are a few tricks to picking out good ones. If you come across a bad one, just pass it and move on.
First, look at the title. Sometimes it will include the type of RP, but sometimes you'll have to look further. If the title appeals to you, take a peek inside.
Before that, though, consider how active it is. Look at the date of the last post. Is it current? Have they already posted a lot, and if so, how long would it take you to catch up in the plot? Consider how much time you have to dedicate. If you can only make it once or twice every week, you'll want to look at all the possibilities within the last week. If you want to participate every day, only go back to the previous day or two. Keep this in mind as you browse the inside.
Next, look at the first bit of information you're given. Do you like the creator's style of writing? Do they write like pre-schoolers, and do you mind if they do? What sort of people do you think it'll attract? Keep this last question in mind as you browse.
After that, start scrolling down, as far as you can (or, if it has started already, until the first post). Look for how much information is given. Is it all scrunched up into one or two posts? Are there separate sections for each area of information? How much history, background, description, and helpful information is there? When answering these questions, just look at the titles of sections, quantity of sections, overall length, and organization. We'll actually read it next, but consider this. Contrary to what you may think, the more information and rules that are provided, the EASIER it will be to roleplay. Knowing what your surroundings are like, what characters are capable of doing, and having a general idea of where you might be able to go will do WONDERS later on.
The next stops are either the rules or the character skeleton. Both of these will tell you a great deal about the RP. The rules tell you what the GM expects, and the skeleton tells you what you can expect. If the realm uses magic, or if it's any other specific type of RP, you'll find out there. Consider from there whether to go on.
Next, look at other people's profiles, if present. Find out who they chose. How good are they at writing? Are you put off by anything? Do you expect to interact well? How lenient is the GM in approving profiles?
Finally, start from the beginning and read everything provided.
Now, tell me when you're done reading all this; I have an assignment for you. 3nodding

Yeah. Getting shot is a bad example, but remember: some wounds can be superificial (edit: I'm an idiot), while even leg wounds can kill you if unattended. In any case, what you want to do is react to the stimulus (what the other person does) in a way typical of your character, then start thinking what your character would do next. It's a constant cycle of planning, reacting, and either modifying or outright destroying your plans. But that's what makes it fun--you never know what's going to happen next!

Ah, okay. If the assignment is too big, we'll pick up tomorrow. If not, we'll stop at the end of it and save the next part for tomorrow.
I want you to go out and pick out 3-5 current RPs that you could join. Pick them apart and make sure they're ones you'd be willing to do. DON'T actually join them yet--we have more work to do before that still. When you're done, post them up here. Don't worry about getting a ton of 'em; you may not even find any you like. Just look at them thoroughly, 'sall. 3nodding

I was mostly just signing in right quick.. but I have a question about the assignment before we start on it later today.
Do the RP's need to be in a specific spot? (In this guild, in other guilds, in the gaia public forums.. ect?)
